WWYD- a spoiled brat situation updated

I received my first designer bag and matching wallet from DH for Christmas. I am totally not a bag person and never really had the desire for a expensive bag. At first I wanted to return it because it's just not me to carry a bag like this. He convinced me that he wanted me to have it. Then he tells me he doesn't want to see it get "beat-up" with everyday use so, please only use it for special occasions. I don't have any special occasions to use it for. When I get formally dressed up I have a collection of little clutches I love. I stay at home with my kids and get a date night every few months. So this bag according to my DH will only see the light 3 times a year maybe. Should I convince him that I don't need it (since it will never get used) or should I let it sit in the closet? I know he will be upset if I return it.

I am not trying to be a spoiled brat about my gift and I am beyond happy he did this for me. I just cant see the money spent sitting in a box in my closet.

Update: I am still really on the fence on what to do. I don't think I should have said designer because the bag is more trendy. Seeing names like LV in the thread made me realize that it's not as expensive as some of those. But to me it is a really expensive bag because it's 4-5x the price I would ever pay for a bag. It is the MK traveler in black. I think i will return it because it's more trendy and not timeless so, it's silly to only take out a piece once and a while that will be out of style soon. Thank you all for your replies. I can relate to everything each one of you stated. It's the same stuff that's going on in my head.

I would keep it and just use it for your date nights or any other special occassion. He obviously really wants you to have it so it must have meant a lot to him to pick it out for you.

Sounds like it really means a lot to him that he got this for you and wants you to have it.

Normally I would say return it. But not this time.

I think it's a little odd that he is giving parameters on when you can use the bag. It's a gift- you should get to decide when to use it! He's telling you to keep it, but only use it sometimes. Chat Icon I think you should keep it, but use it more than 3 times a year. Maybe on errands without the kids? Those are special times too! Chat Icon What bag is it?

I think it is strange that he would give you a gift and then tell you that you can only use it occasionally.

Just keep it and enjoy it. Use it when you want. Even if that means for shopping or going to a friend's house!

Re: WWYD- a spoiled brat situation

I would tell him straight up- if you only want me to use it for "special" occasions I am returning it. I can't see wasting money like that to have it sit in a closet.
It's like buying a new car and saying, only drive it on sunny days when it's above 70 degrees. Come on.

However, if I can use it for every day, then I will keep it and love using it.

Re: WWYD- a spoiled brat situation

Is it something you can practically use every day w/ the kids? If so, then I see NO reason for it to sit in the closet collecting dust. What a complete waste of money!

Or, is it something timeless that isn't going to be 'out' of style in a few years? If that's the case, then it's ALSO not a waste IMO to only use it a few times a year .......

I have a few smaller designer bags that aren't practical for every day for me - but I break them out ANY time I go out w/o the kids - However, they are timeless bags that I can honestly wear 20 years from now.

I just got my second LV Neverfull GM in Damier Azur for Christmas - I have been using my original dark Damier almost every day for 6 or 7 years. - Now I'll switch off fall/winter and spring/summer. I use it to commute into NYC every day, I use it on the weekends w/ all of the kids stuff (Mine are now 3 & 5) I use it on vacation as my 'carry on' ........My LV wallet, used every single day, is now 10 years old and still in exceptional condition.

I think ANYTHING is a waste of money if it sits in your closet never used. - I don't care if you spend $2k or $20 on it - KWIM?

I think it's ridiculous to put conditions as to when you're allowed to use the gift - I can see why he wouldn't want something he spent a small fortune on to get destroyed ........however, there's no point in spending that kind of money on something that's going to sit in a box in the back of your closet - ESPECIALLY a wallet .......who the hell has the time to change out their wallet for a 'special occasion?"

I don't see why you can't use the MK traveler as your every day bag. Its not super trendy - its a classic style. And I don't think it will get beat up. I had a MK tote a few years ago that I used every day for like 2 years and it was fine.

Ha! You must be me. This was my DH and me 2 Christmases ago. I got the same bag! For me, I would never spend $400 on a bag. I flipped when I found out he did this. It was such a nice gesture but we had 1 year old twins and I was pregnant with my 3rd. All I kept thinking was what am I going to do with this? Honestly it's not even really my style. I am very rough on my bags. I don't SAH, but I don't switch my bags out unless for a wedding or something because who has time for that?!!Chat Icon

OMG. The whole family weighed in on this damn bag. WE still call it the great MK incident. Chat Icon DH wanted me to use it everyday (it does hold up great) and I said I didn't need something so extravagant (to me anyway). My family all said I was being a spoiled brat and he was so proud and picked this bag and went to the store and was going on and on about it. He was very proud. He even told me how the girls in his office had the same bag and they loved it. I seriously see this bag everywhere! 3 of us in my office have it.

So basically I used it everyday for the last 2 years. This year I bought myself a different bag for my birthday. It's a Big Buddha bag from Macy's I got on sale for $70. I love it and get complemented on it every day! MK and I are going through a little break-upChat Icon The bag is in my closet. My niece told me she wants it if I ever get rid of it.Chat Icon

Long story short, DH said he's never buying me a bag again.Chat Icon I said thank you.Chat Icon

Re: WWYD- a spoiled brat situation updated

That is a PERFECT every day bag w/ the kids !! It's similar shape/style to the LV I have been using every day for 7 years.
And MK has beautiful leather that will absolutely hold up well! - it's not trendy at all. It's a simple tote!

Obviously your call, but IMO you will definitely get a ton of use out of the bag and completely justify the cost!

This. Also I would have a problem with my husband, or anyone for that matter, telling me when I can use a bag. That bag is an everyday bag to me, not a dressy bag.

ITA! This really bothers me.
He spent a couple hundred on an MK bag, he didn't buy you a Hermes Birkin for 20K. I really don't get this at all.

Exactly this.
You are not a child, I think you can handle keeping the bag clean. It's not pure white or anything.
I'd keep it, use it for my every day bag and that's it.

I wouldn't consider $200-$300 for a bag cheap. A lot of people would consider that a luxury item. So I get where you're coming from.
Granted it's not an LV or Birkin Bag like mentioned in some of the replies, but it's certainly not chump change for a bag.

If YOU feel it's too much, return it.

As for your husbands request on when to use it. I can see where he's coming from if he also feels it was a lot of money.

ETS: I took what he said as a suggestion not a demand.

If you feel like it is too much money for an item that you're not crazy about then return it.

But for the record I think it is a beautiful, classic bag that I would personally use all of the time. Tell DH to shove it with his parameters! Chat Icon That's what I would do.

Just to be clear, I don't consider it a cheap bag. I do not own the Birkin like I mentioned. Heck, I don't even own an MK! It just really disturbs me that there is parameters set on the gift....and while a few hundred dollars is nothing to sneeze at,IMO, it does not warrant restrictions on it. If somebody gave me a bag worth thousands, which is highly unlikely, I still would not want to be told when I could use it! I'm an adult! Gifts shouldn't come with strings.
