WWYD??? Daycare and Allergies Related
My friend has a daughter who is 16 months. She has been going to the same daycare nearly 9 months. She is allergic to Dairy, eggs, and nuts and has been since she started at this daycare. My friend likes the care her daughter gets, and was planning on keeping her there.
Last week, the director told my friend that come June, (when her daughter is 18 months) they will no longer be able to care for her daughter. She will need to find a new daycare. They told her that her daughter is too much of a liability. They told her to find a daycare, that can care for a child with special needs.
So, she told me this whole story, and I am so mad for her. While I think it is nice that they were honest, why were they capable for the 9 months she has been there?
What do you think of this???
Thank you!

i dont see what being allergic to dairy and eggs makes her special needs? but maybe this daycare can't give medicine and they want her in a place that can give her the medicine she needed just in case?

Its a liability to be sure.
Like it or not, its a legitated world we live in. And human error is rarely allowable. They are fearing they could lose their license and close their doors if something goes wrong.
I see their point of view.
At least they told her now. If I were her I'd go elsewhere because really what choice is there?
Allergies are a very scary thing.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe her DD has been in a room where the feeding is more controlled. Meaning the teachers are directly feeding the children and there is not as much a chance that the little girl could get a hold of something with dairy or egg in it.
And maybe when she turns 18 months she is moving into a room where the children are going to be self feeding more and the food is more likely to be all over and her DD has a greater chance of getting a hold of something that will make her sick?
That's just my initial thought. I think it stinks, but it's better that they are being honest with her.

I agree, and am very happy that they told her now. What scares me is, they knew she had these allergies, accepted her into the program, and took the epi-pen.

This is what I was thinking as well. DS currently is in a room that's 12-18 months and he's in a chair with a tray on it for all meals. Come next month, he moves to a room where they all sit at a table... It's harder to control someone eating someone else's food.

Yes, this has to be exactly the reason. I just think its terrible, that she thought he had found that right place. My friend had spoke to the director in great length about her DD's allergies, BEFORE she signed her up. Even when they are in highchairs, another child can still give her something, or drop something. I think it is unprofessional.

Maybe their insurance company threatened to drop them if they didn't get rid of the special needs clients.
Or their rate was going to skyrocket if they allowed this child to remain in the program.
I can imagine what all these allergies are doing to the insurance policies for schools.

Re: WWYD??? Daycare and Allergies Related
It is an EXTREME liability to have a child w/ such severe allergies to care for - Many daycares are not nut free, and depending on the severity of her allergy, she may be @ risk in their center.
I would be disappointed and frustrated, but I'd be grateful that they let me know they were unable to care for her properly so I could be sure to find a place that could.
My son's daycare is completely nut free - it's also completely latex free - My sister brought a huge balloon bouquet for his 2nd BDay and they wouldn't even let her in the building w/ it ........ Granted, she was ****** and disappointed about it, but if I was the Mom w/ the allergic kid, I'd be eternally grateful to have the piece of mind - KWIM?
