WWYD: Flying this year on September 11

So Im going to my cousins wedding in NC in September. They're getting married on the 10th so Im flying down on the 9th and coming home on the 11th. I didnt realize it b/c my dad made all of the travel arrangements but we're going to be flying home on September 11. And now with everything that just happened with Osama Im really getting myself very worried. My DH has to stay home b/c of work so it will be me, my twins who will be 1 by then, my parents and my sister.

I pointed this out to my dad and he asked if I wanted to come home another day which means paying for another night at the hotel and having my kids away from home for another day (who knows how they are going to handle everything.)

One way Im petrified b/c there are already talks of retaliation on the tenth anniversary. But in another way won't security be extremely heightened on this day of all days so it actually might be safer?

Im not normally this worried about things like this. Im thinking it's b/c I'll have my kids with me that Im really working myself up.

I would fly. But you have to do what you feel is comfortable with and if it's another hotel night, it's worth your peace of mind.

I might be flying that day too...my great-grandmother's 100th birthday is on the 10th, and she's in FL.

I think that flying on or near that date will be fine...probably even safer than other dates, which are already extremely safe. The authorities will probably be even more cautious around the ten-year anniversary.

I never fly on that date. I switched tickets to come home from Italy a day early to avoid it.

But, I don't work that day either so I am not the best person to ask.

For me, its not worth it - even though I am sure it is probably one of the safest days.

Im sure out of all days, that will be the safest. Security is going to be insane. And, in newsday today there is a report that they found info in the raid about them targeting our trains, not planes thwt day. Do what you feel is best.

I would generally try to avoid flying that day but if I had to, I would take comfort in the fact that security is always very tight that day and everyone is on high alert.

I'd fly another day just to avoid the crazy security lines and slow downs that day

I'd find that it would be probably one of the safest days to fly.

I also find that airports in other parts of the country are a bit more thorough in their security screenings than in the NY metro area (I flew with DS' bottles and they didn't even test them at EWR in March so technically, I made a security breach!)

But - to PPs point - the security lines will probably be longer than usual so I'd leave extra time.

I'm flying that day too - I have a wedding in Buffalo that weekend and I don't have the time to take off of work that Monday.

It's freaking me out a little, but it is what it is.

I'm hoping it's one of those extra safe days because everyone is worried.

I would fly but I have to say if you are uncomfortable, I would make other arrangements. There is no need for you to be anxious over this for the next few months and then anxious for the actual trip. That is going to put so much stress on you.

I flew that day but from Italy to Greece in 2009. Didn't change anything at the airport for us...

I don't know if it would be any safer or any more dangerous than the other 364 days of the year. I can definitely understand why it might be a little intimidating to fly that day, but frankly, airport security would probably be more beefed up on that day, even if you don't notice it.

we will be in disney w the kiddies and I will not go to the parks on Sept 11 just in case

I honestly think that would be the safest day to fly.

They usually wait to do something when nobody is expecting it.

Plus- there have been eight years worth of Sept 11ths since 2001- nothing happened on any of them.

I would fly. We did last year on 9/11 DH wasnt crazy about it, but if anything security was far more alert that day, I kinda felt safer.

I flew into NY last year on 9/11 (for my 9/18 wedding). The airports weren't crowded and security was more thorough then normal. I did feel at ease.

It still felt weird to fly on that date, but all in all it wasn't bad at all.

not sure I should add my f*ed up logic...but I don't think NY-NC would be a targeted route anyway.

My Mom and brother flew on the one year anniversary of 9-11...no problems what so ever.Security is going to be super high... I would think it will be a safe day to fly because of the extra security...
