WWYD?? Induction option Question (a lil long) with Poll

OK... so here goes a little bit of history:

I always have had a really bad back and neck (sciatica due to calcified discs in my lower back and herniated discs in my neck - all stemming from a bad car accident as a teen) and being pregnant does NOT help with the pain and discomfort in both areas.
I am at the point now that when I walk, by lower back clicks with each step, and every other step is a hot poker down my leg.
I haven't had a full night's sleep in weeks (which many of you can understand), it's truly starting to wear on me... physically and emotionally.

I have been feeling like totally azz the last week - nauseous, cramps, etc. I have not had any indication that labor is near - except for last Thursday with some contractions that were every 45 min. for about 3hrs - but then everything stopped. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have my next appt. tomorrow and my Dr said that if I have a "nice cervix" (close to fully effaced - I'm 50% and 1cm as of last Fri.) I have the option of being induced.

Now, the only thing that is running around in my brain is the next thing he said. I will be 40 wks on Monday - due 1/19. If I don't deliver on my own by next Friday (1/22) I have no other option but to be induced the next day (1/23). He doesn't want me to go past 41 wks. I never asked why since I trust his judgement.

OH! If you've read this far, thank you!!!

So, here are my questions:
What would you do?
Would you go for the option this Saturday? or wait it out 'til I have to be induced?
What are your thoughts??

Thanks for reading!!

tough question...

personally i would try to hold out as long as i could just because of the trend of c-sections due to inductions...BUT...it also sounds like you are in a tremendous amount of pain and if you can't take it anymore then do it! the last thing you need is unnecessary pain. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

In your situation, as long as your doctor doesn't think a vaginal birth would injure your back even more, and you are as effaced/dilated as he wants you to be, I would elect to have the induction. Chat Icon And to be honest, I'm not pro-induction at ALL but it really is the best option for some women.

I agree. I would normally say wait it out, but I've been in your situation-being in that much pain. If you are full term, have some progress, I would go for it. Because from Saturday to Friday, you might not even progress any more, it would be better to make you comfortable and get better at this point.Chat Icon

Re: WWYD?? Induction option Question (a lil long) with Poll

I know you must be in so much pain, but I would wait it out to see if you go into labor on your own. Then if not you will be induced on the 23rd anyway. I know right now that feels like forever away, but it is much closer than it feels. You have made it this far, and I think you are more than capable of waiting it out. I want to avoid being induced if possible, b/c I want to have a natural birth without pain meds. I know being induced can bring contractions/labor on like a ton of bricks. That is my reasoning. Re: WWYD?? Induction option Question (a lil long) with Poll

I think its a completely personal decision. My OB also gave me the option to be induced - b/c I am already 2cm and 70% since 38 wks he said it would be a very easy induction. But, there is no reason to - he offers this for scheduling I think - doesn't push it at all - honestly, the idea is tempting - especially with another child the ability to "plan" the unplannable. That said, I had a totally natural delivery with Ds and would like to try the samt thing this time around so the idea of having to go through the entire labor process in the hospital is scary to me - the pitocin, the contractions all in a hospital bed = definite epidural in my mind Chat Icon ANyway, if I wasn't so set on a certain type of delivery I might consider it - esepcially at 40 wks (which I am now) - so I think it's totally up to you!

it sounds like you may go to my doctor bc he does inductions at 39 weeks when your cervix is ready for it...I actually was induced last saturday and it was great...It is up to you whether to wiat or not but I can tell you that if you trust your dotcor and he is saying that he thinks an inudtcion at 39 weeks will work for you that it may not be a bad idea...good luck!

Re: WWYD?? Induction option Question (a lil long) with Poll

I would induce this weekend but I'm completely biased and no longer thinking clearly - my due date is tomorrow and I'm so tired and nauseous and gross - I just want this baby out already. If I had back pain compounding how I already feel, I would do it too - just being honest. But you have to think about what you can handle and if it makes sense for you and for your pain and family. Good luck either way - maybe you'll go into labor before you have the chance to decide!! Chat Icon
