WWYD? When I dropped DD off at daycare this AM

the teacher in her room had 3 children (under 1) and DD would be the 4th child.

I was hanging DD's stuff on the hook and then was taking DD out of her carseat. The teacher was squatting down next to me and was trying to undo the straps of the carseat. (Obviously it doesn't take two people to do this but I'm sure she does it just to be helpful.) I look over and see a child on the ground playing with the electrical cord that is plugged in to the microwave on top of a white like shelf thingy. Chat Icon

The teacher runs over and says, "No, no Bobby!" and moves him away from the cord.

Now DD is only 6.5 months old so she doesn't really go on the ground at daycare but I feel like this is a huge problem!

What if the kid pulled the cord and the microwave fell on top of him? What if God forbid the kid electrocuted himself? There was something else plugged in to the outlet but the cord was taped to the wall...

I don't know what to do because I think that the two teachers in DD's room are great with her but now IDK what to think.

I'm afraid that if I say something to the director then the teacher will know that I said something and I'm just afraid of what will come of it.

DD is there full time and has been going there since she was about 8 weeks old.

I would just call the center and let the director know, I'm sure that's something they want to correct. It would absolutely scare me, and I am positive that is something that would be considered a violation if they had a visit from OCFS.

ETA: Don't be afraid to say something, the teacher isn't going to get in trouble, she's not the one who put the microwave there!

I would say something to the director. Not a complaint, just a "hey, I was in the infant room this am and I saw this, maybe the furniture needs to be moved around abit" or something to that effectChat Icon

I would ABSOLUTELY say something to the director! There is too much risk there and no reason a plug should be accessible to a crawling baby! That is a complete violation. Even if there was 2 babies per teacher, there will always be a baby who is just an inch out of reach. You wouldn't be "telling on" the teacher, but possibly preventing an accident or worse!

Yes, I totally think you should say something to the Director. I know you don't want to cause any tension with the teacher, but it's not about you. It's about your DD and the other children in the class.

The first week I picked up DS when he was 3 months old. I found him napping on his belly. I was so upset by this and had a talk with the Director and teacher. It never happened again and now DS obviously rolls on his own. I do love his daycare and I know the teachers love him, but when it comes to the care of my son I want to make sure when I'm not there I shouldn't have to worry about his safety

ITA!!!

NEVER be afraid to say anything EVER!

I had an incident at my previous daycare that bothered me ALOT and I went over during my lunch hour to talk to the director about it.

I know the teacher knew I said something since I was the onlyl parent in the room at the time, but I didn't care. My daughters well being and safety are more important to me then what the teacher thinks of me for "telling"

Re: WWYD? When I dropped DD off at daycare this AM

When My DS went to the day care he is currently in, I walked around and noted safety issues that I felt needed to be corrected before I could let him go there. They were a brand new center, so kinks still needed to be worked out. The main one was a latch on the door that the children could not reach.

Never feel bad about speaking up, it maybe a problem they do not realize, maybe they can get something to make the microwave safer, it's your child, you want to keep them safe Chat Icon

Re: WWYD? When I dropped DD off at daycare this AM

Well one way around it is this...when you go into pick up DC today talk to the teacher and say you have been thinking about what happened this morning, and while it wasn't necessarily her fault, it's not fair to have the furniture/microwave set up where it potentially *could* be dangerous to anyone. I would say to her that you are going to say something to the director, again clarifying that it wasn't the teachers fault, and suggest that they move things around. This way it appears that you are an advocate for your child, the teacher and the safety of all the children in the room.

I would email the director instead of speaking to her about the microwave (documentation!!).

I agree that they may not realize it until they're being written up for a safety violation or worse - having a child injured.
