Re: what do you think about Grandparents wanting the same amount of money as daycare to watch your DC?
My great grandmother watches DD, and we pay less than $100 a week.

Re: what do you think about Grandparents wanting the same amount of money as daycare to watch your DC?
My MIL offered to watch DD fulll time and said that we would not have to pay her. I find that to be ridiculous. My il's are not independetly wealthy and I know they need my mil's salary.
I would pay her, but not what we would pay for full time day care.

Honestly, I would be taken back. To me family is HUGE and we all do favors for eachother at NO COST. It comes down to love. But if she needs the money, what can you do. Does she smoke? or maybe she is putting the money into an account for your DC. Who knows what her real reason is but I hope its a good one and just not a selfish one.

Re: what do you think about Grandparents wanting the same amount of money as daycare to watch your DC?
my mom use to have her own business. she stopped doing it and worked part time. i told her that if i paid her to watch DC 3 times a week she could stop working p/t somewhere else. So I pay her $50 a day to watch my 2 children about 6-8 hours.
It's cheaper than daycare...and I know they are in good hands. I would pay the same amount just to know they are in good hands.

Re: what do you think about Grandparents wanting the same amount of money as daycare to watch your DC?
No. I don't think she should make as much as daycare. As a pp stated, daycare has things like insurance, etc they have to pay, and she does not.
My parents LOVE watching DS, but they don't want to do it everyday. My mom is retired and my SIL said to me when I was pregnant "Oh, that is PERFECT, your mom will watch the baby" and when I said she wouldn't she acted like my mom should be arrested for child abuse. My parents are out back up, if DH has an appointment or something, my mom watchs DS and that is a great thing for us.
If we had stayed on Staten Island, my SMIL would have watched DS (in fact, she is thinking of moving out here, so she wants to watch him again) and we were going to pay her $200 a week, give her a car seat base, a pnp, diapers, formula and wipes.

I can totally understand paying someone (even family), but the same amount as daycare???? That's a little crazy. The whole point of family watching your children is usually because they are trying to HELP you out.
Then again, nobody is offering to watch my DD

I would feel more confident leaving a child with her than the 18-year olds I have seen at Tutor Time or whatever, so it is definitely something we will consider.
Teachers at daycares need to have some kind of training and they do not come straight out of high school to watch you children. Most of the teachers are going to school at the same time to become teachers in elementary schools, etc.

This is what the requirements are to be an Asst Teacher at Tutor Time: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Degree in early childhood development or similar field preferred. Demonstrate an understanding of all current state and local regulations. Previous work experience in childcare environment preferred.
Looks like the only requirement is high school diploma or GED.
And it's the same for Teachers: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Degree in early childhood development or similar field preferred. Demonstrate an understanding of all current state and local regulations. Previous work experience in childcare environment preferred.
Not that I think degrees have anything to do with competence--I have a doctorate in education and do not consider myself qualified to care for a group of babies. But it looks like they will hire recent high school grads.

That is weird. My MIl and Mom watch DS and i pay Nothing! Which is great b/c DH and I save on Daycare. They buy DS his diapers and food I am really appreciative of them for this. I dont even think they would take money from us.

Maybe at Tutor Time but not at my daycare. What kind of teacher are you speaking of? I don't know any teacher that can get a job in a school district without a degree.

They call the daycare providers at Tutor Time "teachers" and "assistant teachers." It doesn't matter at all, point was just that 18 year olds are in charge of the rooms at some daycare centers.

This makes me
b/c my dad said that while he loves his granddaughter and grandson, it is not his job to stay home and watch them. my parents both work f/t and there is no way they would quit their jobs or retire early to watch both my sisters and my kids.
I don't get why it's assumed that a retired grandparent would just automatically watch a baby every day.

And the FUNNIEST thing is: my MIL would NEVER, EVER in 5000 years watch a grandchild when she retires, so I have NO idea where my moron SIL got that from

Re: what do you think about Grandparents wanting the same amount of money as daycare to watch your DC?
I think that is just absurd, I would never think to pay them as much as daycare. They should want to do it to help you out and spend time with their grandchild, I can see helping them out with gas but I would never pay the same as daycare considering they are not going to provide the same activities that they provide at daycare.
