I would say if you are going to complain about it, complain on your local moms page because they are the idiots that ruined it for everybody.

My son is remote this week because of Covid exposure. My takeaway: Kids have ZERO supervision. I can not believe what the teacher is dealing with. She has patience Mother Theresa would envy. Who lost internet connection? Who doesn't have the right work sheets? Who can't find the page she is referencing? BTW, this was a big exposure so the teacher was well prepared with providing all of the work. I can't imagine what she would be dealing with if Susie is normally in school but today she has to go to the orthodontist so she's going to be home. That's ridiculous. Teachers have so much pressure on them.

As someone else said, just do like you would pre-covid. It shouldn't be a free for all.

Side note: Remote learning is an awesome way to find out who you do NOT want your kids associating with. Some of these kids are real disrespectful azzholes.

Clearly I am the minority and that’s fine.
I still don’t see the big deal if a child is fully engaged and learning where they are learning from Should not make a difference.
Also no teacher is being inconvenienced because they have to log on anyway so if a child has a dr appointment and there’s an opportunity for the Child to still be able to lean there is no reason they can’t log on remotely and receive credit.

The fact that there are allowing it and stopped simply because people were not actually home when remote is ridiculous to me and a better answer should have been given.

On top of the fact that I was told they were required to mark a child present according to NYS rule but now they are saying they misinterpreted the rule.
So I feel like I am being lied too or the school has no idea on what they are doing which gets me also equally annoyed/mad

Well ITA with you. I can see the school setting limits on the child’s behavior online such as no jumping on a trampoline, they must be paying attention etc, but to deny them this option if it’s being made available anyway is nonsensical to me too.

Who says most kids aren't successful in learning remotely? I have quite a few friends who are remote only in our district, and have been very successful. My child has been successful doing every other day in person. It's highly dependent on the child and their home life IMO.

Data says it has largely been unsuccessful. Talking with my students and parents has furthered supported the idea that it has been unsuccessful. Talking with my colleagues around the state has led me to believe that it has been unsuccessful.

If you have a self motivated student and supportive parents, your child can be successful remotely. Motivation for students, however, is currently very low. Even my high achieving students, who have been virtual since September came back for Quarter 4 as their motivation was waning.

Most students are drowning, even the students who usually get on high honor roll. Even students with great supportive parents.

When they asked parents to say if their child was going in person or staying remote for the remainder of the year our district implemented the same policy with the same rational. I have friends who drove to Florida for 2 weeks so one week spring break and one week of school in Florida to stay at their parent's Florida house. The district is furious that parents were doing this.

Why are they furious who cares if they are getting their work done and not causing problems. A student who is full remote can do this and nothing would be said cause they probably wouldn’t even know!!!

They're furious because people shouldn't be taking advantage.

I also agree with the school. My son goes 2 cohort days and one of the first weeks he was back he logged on remote during the day because he had a dr appointment I had scheduled for him before he was going the 2 cohort days and he was marked absent even though he was on remotely the whole day.

She said they clarified- they can log on, but they won't be marked present.
My daughter is fully-remote and is not marked present unless her camera is on and she is fully engaged/ready for the lesson. These teachers are under immense stress and pressure to teach remotely and jumping back and forth between virtual and in person just because it's convenient for you isn't fair.
I just don't get why parents are upset that their child can do the work/catch up, but not be marked present..what's the big deal?

Re: Does anyone else find this ridiculous... remote learning

I didn’t read through this whole thread but I completely agree with you, OP! I think being able to be virtual & flexible with education is a wonderful benefit of technology today. I agree it’s better for a kid to log in virtually & attend class in some way rather than saying if they can’t be there physically they can’t come at all. I think this is especially true for older kids (high school) who in a few years may be attending college where all or most their classes are virtual.

To add to this, the cheating is out of control. A friend told me that her son goes to private school and kids who got 75%'s usually now go remote on test days and get 100%'s now. And the school has to try to contain it.

You must have missed that I said the teachers are logged in anyway for the students that are still remote so they are not jumping back and forth.
The “big deal” is if they are logged in doing the work why shouldn’t they be marked present and get the credit for attending. It’s dumb! It was ok for months and now it’s not because kids went on vacation and logged in remotely it is a problem???!! Again to me it seems people are bitter about the fact that a child had flexibility to do it and they don’t!

Also at first they wouldn’t even let the kids log on they since changed that after the first announcement probably cause there was lots of complaints not just me.

Again though I asked for opnions if people find it ridiculous or is it just me and clearly I’m the minority and people don’t. I haven’t heard anything to change my mind but I get the other views.

First question is, are they not letting them log on completely or just that if they are not physically in school and choose to stay home & log on instead they will get marked absent but still allowed to do classwork? Big difference!

I don't disagree with the school, only because in our district you are either remote learning or in school 5 days.....it's not pick or choose when it's convenient for each child/parent. If my Son is home, he is still able to log on and do his schoolwork so he is not behind, but he is still marked absent

Our school has the same policy and I think it’s fine.

Why do you care if they are marked absent thou? Unless you plan on them having many unexcused absences, it's not a bid deal. Let her log on so she doesn't miss the material and take the absence. Also, you always have the option to pick her up, take her to the doc and drop her back off. No need to miss an entire day for a mid day appointment.

Cause there is absolutely no reason to be marked absent when they are logged on doing the work. While they don’t have many unexcsued absences I do pull my kids out of school if I decide to on vacation and before anyone asks I would not and did not have them logged on.

Also picking them up and dropping them off isn’t that easy to do especially at my school and I work and it’s causing more time away from my job. Plus depending on when the appointment is it makes little sense to do all that to drop them back off again when they might’ve missed lunch and I have to feed them before dropping them back off it’s just easier with the option available to have them login.
And I get pre-Covid this would not be an option but it’s not pre-Covid still remote learning is still going on and like someone else said you made us all do remote learning and now when we can take advantage of remote learning we are being told no!

We just have to hope that the all or nothing approach doesn't incentivize families to mask symptoms and send sick kids to school. Nothing should surprise us any more.

They still get credit if they go remote for covid symptoms, exposure, etc.

That should take care of that then; you're right.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes, THAT'S why parents send kids to school sick. So they don't get marked absent.

Parents motrin their kids up so they can go to work.

Lol yes, but I feel that they've been better this year since many are still working from home and every little sniffle is being over scrutinized.

We took my kids out of school to go to Kalahari, they were absent but I had them remote in to do their work (well, DS 1 wasn't absent as it was an asynchronous day so he just had attendance sheets).

Pick up and drop off is the bane of my existence so I schedule appointments where I just pick them up 15-30 minutes before school ends.

At our school, if you go in for the start of the school day and leave early, you aren't absent. Why don't you send them in, pick them up for their appointments and keep them home after?

ETA - this is a crazy year for schools and they need to track where the kids are supposed to be - if you keep on changing from in person to remote on random days, it's hard for them to do that. I do have a friend though who's pulling her kids for 10 days before her daughter's communion - I think they are just going to be absent as the 2nd grade teacher and below don't teach remotely, there is a separate class.

Re: Does anyone else find this ridiculous... remote learning

There are many issues that can come up that others have described during virtual learning. Although a teacher may be teaching in person and virtually at the same time (a job you couldn't pay me enough to do) that doesn't mean every child will have what they need for the lessons being taught. Depending on the online platforms being used, having a student unexpectedly logging in could mean they don't have access to the materials that are being used virtually. Those materials have to be assigned by the teacher, so he/she would have to stop and do that during class time or the child would not have access. Also, children that are not accustom to doing their work online will more than likely have difficulty navigating all of the materials, websites, and platforms the teacher is using, again taking time away from the class.

As much as it may look to you like your child can just log on whenever and it should be seamless, that is because a very good, exhausted, and overworked teacher is behind the scenes making sure to take the brunt of that stress and work so that the children can manage.

This is a challenging year for everyone. I understand that it would be difficult for you to pick up your child and return them to school after the appointment is done. I get how hard it is to be a working mom. I understand how difficult it is to get appointments for children outside of the school day. However, the school is not there for your convenience, to make your day to day life easier. The school is there to educate your child and keep ALL of the children safe and in a supportive learning environment. Parents pulling kids out and having them go virtual for vacations, haircuts (yes that has happened at my school) dentist appointments, karate belt tests, doctor's appointments, Christmas photos etc. etc. sends a clear message to the child and the teacher where that family's priorities stand.

I 100% agree with the school's policy.

Again though most of this doesn’t apply to my school and they are allowing them to login and attend which is where I find it dumb just give them the credit.

I also said if the kid happens to need something they don’t have that would be on them.

I don’t think any parent who keeps thier kid home because they’re not feeling well or has a doctors appointment and is expecting the teacher to accommodate them if they don’t have the materials at home already!

A lot of assumptions are being made no one said school is there for my convenience but I find it ironic when this first started how many teachers used the excuse they couldn’t teach cause you know they did have someone to watch their kids so I guess it was inconvenient for them to try!!
See me making that assumption is just as bad as yours!!

With my district it makes no difference they quarantine a whole entire class anyway for one positive. Also it’s not hard to trace there is attendance on who is in and who is not. My son actually avoided quarantine once cause he happen to be absent!

I try to make appointments where it doesn’t disturb thier day but most of these are specialist and I can only get what I can get and as is sometimes I have to wait months out just to get any thing they have available if I want to be picky about the times the wait is even longer!

I agree with what your friend is doing and will probably do it for my kids and pull them 10 days before to avoid a quarantine which is why I also believe till they do away with quarantining schools should allow the option of pulling our kids in advance to be remote when we have important things to do outside of school!

I apologize if you felt I was attacking you, that wasn't my intention. I was just going by your comments about being able to feed your child lunch, and getting appointments because of your work.

As others have said, although parents may not expect the teacher to accommodate if the child doesn't have everything, the fact that they don't have everything will impact the lesson and young children will have difficulty dealing with observing a lesson, not having what they need, trying to participate and being told they can't do parts of the lesson bc they don't have what they need-all of that causes stress and interrupts the lesson.

As for teachers saying they couldn't teach because there was no one to watch their children, I can't speak to that. The teachers I know and work with did not experience this. Yes, last spring everyone was in a position of having to work without child care, everything was closed down. My colleagues taught with their own children in their homes, often times in their arms while they were doing their jobs. They did what needed to be done, under the direction of their administration (because let's face it, teachers have no control) and they did the best they could in the horrible circumstances that everyone was dealt (teachers and community members alike).

Hopefully next year will be closer to "normal" school and this won't even be an issue.

Does anyone else find this ridiculous... remote learning

It’s total BS
I am in westchester and my special needs child goes to schoo but the teacher is remote because of some health concerns ( not COVID)
The schools do whatever shit they want honestly

I agree with the school.

I don’t see why you couldn’t just behave like this was pre-Covid and either pull your kid out of school early/send them late or just miss a day. It happens and it’s no big deal.

I am doing this but the point is why when they are online anyway? If child doesn’t have to miss work then why not let them.

Because you signed up to have your kid in school to learn and not remote?

Schools and teachers are there for your kids to learn, not to be a convenient babysitter to suit your needs. If they make an exception for you then they would have to extend it to everyone else and we all know that not every kid is equipped to handle the remote learning., which causes an even bigger burden on the teachers.

I don't know if it's been stated but depending on what system the school uses it can be a logistical nightmare if they're marking kids present but they are at home. God forbid something happens and the school's system is saying 602 are present in the building but in reality there are only 597 because a handful are remote, that's a nightmare. Then people are looking for the five kids that aren't there, kwim?

I know the system our school uses doesn't have an option for "absent but virtually present". Teachers were calling the main office constantly re: how to take attendance properly and that takes away from class time too. Plus - if you're putting the onus on teachers to make notes and comments in the attendance system, well, teachers are human and make mistakes too. So it's really just a logistical nightmare all around.

What is the solution to doctor/dentist appointments during the school day? The school will hunt you down like a cat on a mouse for their medical forms, but it’s an inconvenience for the teacher to not have the kid in school?

They now can log in but they will be marked absent at first they said they couldn’t at all but either way I find it unfair if a child is logging in they can’t receive credit for doing so.

This sounds ideal. You're absent but you at least have the option to log in so you don't fall behind on classwork. That's not unreasonable.

You need to have a LOT of unexcused absences before it will matter. Not to mention you could probably get a note from whatever doctor you had that would make it excused. Nobody cares about attendance unless it's truly an excessive amount.
