According to BMI charts: Chris "Thor" Hemsworth is overweight Jason "Aquaman" Mamoa is overweight Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is obese
Yes BMI charts need to go. They only look at weight not body comp You can be 200 lbs of lean muscle and the BMI chart will say you're overweight. My DH was telling me what weight he should be for his height based on those charts and I can assure you he would look emaciated and sickly at that weight. It's crazy

I’m pretty sure anyone with a brain knows that eating healthy, exercising, not drinking/smoking will lead to an overall healthier body. This isn’t new information.
Exactly

Re: Covid prevention
This has got to be the dumbest debate, how can anyone deny or even argue with the fact that being healthy and boosting your immune system is great defense to fight any sickness or virus. When someone is diagnosed with cancer doctors don’t tell their patients to go eat fat juicy cheeseburgers.
Honestly, many around me last year were being snarky and saying stupid comments when I would suggest boosting our immune system, exercising, going for walks or even going to see their damn doctors for a routine check up. I didn’t care and drank my vitamin C, zinc, hiked, exercised, went for my routine physical where he suggested I lose a few pounds and stressed the importance of being healthy during the pandemic.
I got sick with Covid this year, chronic asthma, slightly over weight, with minimal to know symptoms. The first thing my sister said, who was one of the people who disregarded my advice the year prior, thank goodness you boosted your immune system and was active with exercising. Lol. I just replied “yeah, I know right”.
This doesn't’ mean don’t get the vaccine, or don’t wear mask, or don’t hide to protect yourself it means make sure you are also taking care of your health. Like we all should be doing in LIFE!!
I also don’t think this will prevent you from getting Covid but it will 10000% help and can protect you. Isn’t that what everyone is always talking about on hear? Why is this a bad thing?

I was just sitting here reading this thread and as much as I know Americans are known to be more over weight than others, I also know that according to a BMI chart I am obese. I have some chunk don’t get me wrong. But obese? I wear a size 6-8

I feel like a lot of people only want to rely on the pharmaceutical companies to save them. People who look for more natural remedies or look to a healthy lifestyle to help them achieve their health goals are looked at as "crunchy granola" nut jobs. Many people will take any drug a doctor throws at them rather than change their lifestyle. Type 2 Diabetes? Quick here's metformin. So much easier than stopping the sugar and carbs. High Cholesterol? Here's a statin drug- carry on with eating your t-bone steaks every other day. ENJOY! Nobody even questions the long term side effects of these drugs and if they are curing one thing while causing another. Nobody does any research of their own- they just blindly swallow the pill. I am NOT saying we don't need drugs and modern medicine- of course we do. And of course there are many things you have no choice but to take meds for and thank God for them because they are life saving. But there are also things that can be done to keep yourself healthy that don't really on a prescription or pill. But like you said, nobody wants to hear it.

I completely agree. I have never been on any kind of medication for an extended period of time (knock on wood), not even birth control pills. I will take advil here and there for migraines but other than that I really try to avoid everything. Not that I wouldn't treat something if I was very sick, but I do find that people often look to medication before they look to more natural ways to solve a problem. I think that even a lot of mental health issues can be helped immensely with exercise and diet and things like avoiding alcohol amongst other things. But so much of big pharma is crammed down our throats. Don't get me wrong, I think things like vaccines are wonderful but there is a medication out there for just about everything nowadays. If I see the commercial for the new drug to treat bulging eye syndrome one more time I might have to stop watching TV.

I agree BMI doesn't work for everyone but I find for myself it's been extremely accurate. If I drop below my minimum BMI I start to look sickly and if I start getting closer to the higher end I look like a chubster. My husband and I are the same height though and he always weighs 20-30 lbs more than me and if he weighed the same as me I think he would look absolutely emaciated. I never understood why there aren't different BMI charts for men and women.

I suffer from migraines as well and the side effects of many of the migraine medications scared the crap out of me (chest pain, shortness of breath, symptoms of a heart attack). When I checked into why it was because the migraine med was causing your blood vessels to constrict to try an combat the migraine. Honestly the migraines themselves sounded better than that. I ended up doing a ton of research and found a combination of supplements/vitamins and started taking them religiously. I have been migraine free for almost 2 years now.(knock on wood). That can't be a coincidence. I was getting migraines constantly 2 summers ago. Then I added a few things to my supplement routine and NOTHING. I also love the commercials for drugs that are meant to combat the side effects of other drugs.

Re: Covid prevention
I feel like this is a silly debate happening for the sake of just wanting to argue. OF COURSE eating healthy, exercising and boosting your immune system helps to prevent serious covid. Even the vaccine is based on your immune system response! Is a healthy lifestyle a guarantee? OF COURSE NOT - neither is the vaccine.
Covid will definitely be back with a vengeance in the Fall, vaccine or not. I hope I am wrong.

If less people get tested and stay home when they are sick and only go to the hospital when necessary, numbers will stay down. Just like what is happening now. If enough people get the vaccine why would it come back with a vengeance?

Not if new variants develop that the vaccine is not as effective against. The more people that get the vaccine now, the less opportunity these variants have to develop

That would be true if it applied to people around the globe. There is no way that enough people will be vaccinated globally to prevent new variants from developing and spreading. So I guess you are probably right - we are screwed if in fact the new variants are as contagious and deadly as the original.

My fear of that is based on the fact that the vaccine does not as I understand it, prevent you from getting or spreading covid. Yes maybe symptoms will be less and fewer deaths if the vaccine works. But if you can still test positive which will lead to quarantines and masks and lockdowns and absolute mayhem.

I think after awhile these restrictions will be lifted and we won’t have quarantining anymore.
