Actually ped did not encourage me to bf. They actually said as long as child is growing it doesn't matter what they eat. They said it is a personal choice and they don't rec. one over the other.

Re: Why is the first thing people ask did you breast feed? (VENT!!!!)
my OB first encouraged me, then the nurses while I was in the hospital, then the ped office strongly encouraged me to BF.
I wanted to give it up when I found out my baby had allergies, but ped pushed on that I continue to BF.
I figured all drs pushed for it, guess I was wrong.

I am also a firm believe in doing what works for you and your baby even if that means formula feeding from the very beginning. I tried breastfeeding and it was a horrible experience. I feel like I lost out on Emma's first month because I was so preoccupied with breastfeeding. Emma has been on formula ever since and ( knock on wood) has only been sick once. My 2 nieces who were both breastfed are sick sonstantly. I don't think anyone should be made to feel guilty about not breastfeeding. It does not make you any less of a mother. If it is not working for you, then how is it benefiting your baby...aqnd those are words right from Emma's pediatrician's mouth.

News flash -- you can drink alcohol and still breastfeed. I don't know her situation, but having a drink or two does not negate the benefits of breastfeeding. Also, there is no need to pump and dump.

Yes, I am BFing(oh, and I do drink caffine and have a couple of glasses of wine at night. Apparently, that makes me a bad mother),
It always makes me laugh when people post how bad a breastfeeding mother is if she drinks caffiene or alcohol in moderation or if she doesn't eat perfectly all the time. Studies have shown there is nothing wrong with this. But this myth somehow persists (usually used to tear-down breastfeeding mothers).
And many myths persist for the tear-down non-breastfeeding mothers. It stinks that people can't respect a mother's right to choose what is best for her child and her family, one way or the other.

I think your ped probably knows that the most important thing for a healthy, loving, smart child is caring parents who do what is best for their family and respect the choices of others.
Your ped probably also knows that some of the idiots you see walking around in the world were formula fed and others were breast fed. They are still idiots none the less-it wasn't how they were fed that made them that way, but how they were raised.

WOW omg that's crazy, as I mentioned above I am bfing , since the day I found out I was pregnant I have not had coffee( I was a BIG coffee drinker) or any alcohol at all(not that I drink anyway), I know they say it's ok in moderation, but I just didn't want to risk it, it's been 6 months since I started bfing, and I can't even bring myself to drink 1/2 glass of wine(I know it's nuts , but I guess I am just one of those people)

Re: Why is the first thing people ask did you breast feed? (VENT!!!!)
i love this post. Thanks to all the women who responded and made me feel normal for having all these feeling. i too am so sick of this - luckily most of the BFers on this site do not come across as condecending.....i'm so tired of the statements - i wanted to do what's best for my baby, i wanted to give my baby the best possible start. Best according to who?? Feeding and nutrition is one part of what's best for baby. Having a sane mother and a happy family unit is much more important IMO. I BF my daughter for a week and tried so hard for it to work my logic was hey, i got these boobs for a purpose i might as well try it out. but it was the most stressful week of my life and i feel like i missed the joy of my first born babies first week due to the stress. That is definitely not the best start for any life! Thank you ladies for making my day!

"I think all anyone can ask from a mom is that they try to BF" To me that can be interpreted as if you didn't try, it's okay if someone tries to make you feel guilty. Perhaps if it was worded differently, I wouldn't have questioned it
I took it the same way.
did you ped encourage you to try and BF?
BFing is best if the mother is capable. To ask that a mom does what is best, isn't that normal? To try it out and see if it works for you?
My ped, nurses, doctors, NO ONE ever encouraged me to do one thing or another. It was never even questioned.

Re: Why is the first thing people ask did you breast feed? (VENT!!!!)
My pediatrican never pushed one over the other either. When she asked how he was fed, I said "formula" and guess I looked a bit guilty (post baby blue coming through, lol). She said "perfectly fine nutrition, I formula fed all three of my boys". It was nice to hear actually instead of hearing yet another person give me reasons as to the benefits of breast milk.
Also needed to add...when you have a baby like my son...who squiggled, cried, squirmed and WOULD NOT latch and you are sitting there in tears...you just want the baby FED already instead of wondering why it isn't working. It's very overwhelming, not all babies take to it the same and guess what? When a bottle went in his mouth he downed that formula and slept for 4 hours. It was what I needed to throw in the towel. May not be an "inspirational" story for women having trouble breastfeeding but it's true. After that, NO guilt! Well not much anyway...

Re: Why is the first thing people ask did you breast feed? (VENT!!!!)
I do find it very strange that this question has become so much the norm - two seconds after i announced i was pg to my DH"s family my MIL asked me if I was planning on bf - mind you she NEVER did any of her children - she asked the same q repeatedly in front of people for most of my pregnancy. I can't tell you how many random people asked me this q while i was pregnant and i was shocked!
I was watching the E red carpet a few weeks ago and couldn't believe it when Ryan Seacrest asked this q to jessica alba... um, hello??? am i missing something???
My DS is EBF still at 6 mos. It was one of the hardest things i have ever done. yes, after 2 mos it was second nature but it was agony before that with everything i went through and, i have to say i think it was the new stigma a/ formula that pushed me to continue in my overly hormonall state - which is probably ridiculous.
i agree about there being nothing wrong with formula but, i also want to say for the record that i have never heard of any baby spititng up bm that would not spit up the same or worse with formula. my son has had major reflux since he was born and one day my FIL made a comment that maybe it was my bm - it made me so sad and so nervous that i was afraid I was poisoning my son - so i gave him a formula bottle - he threw up the entire thing. anyway, just wanted to say that that particular comment bothered me a bit b/c it is such a worry for bf moms - it is so easy to worry it is "you" anytime your ds is spitting up or not wanting to eat. and, i have personally never heard of that being the case with bm vs. formula.

It's b/c over the last couple of years there has been this crazy breast feeding movement. Years ago, when our parents and grandparents had babies formula was actually encouraged and considered healthier b/c this way dr's were sure what was going into babies bodies instead of what a mother was or was not eating, drinking, smoking, etc.
Part of the reason I probably failed at breast feeding was b/c it wasn't for me. I felt weird doing it, no matter how natural it's supposed to be.
