I guess I'm in the minority. I had my daughter's hair highlighted (lightly) when she was 9.

I did it because her hair would get naturally highlighted in the summer and it looked great. But as she got older it stayed dark. I get it done so lightly that it looks natural.

I wouldn't allow her to get streaks of color or anything until she was maybe 14. She's only 12 now.

Did she ask for it or you did before she asked? Just curious.

i tihnk it depends on the color. if a kid is going to do something extreme like platinum blonde or jet black or hot pink, as a parent, i woudn't be pleased, but i would probably say about age 16.

if a girl just wants some highlights or something like that... maybe 13???

I was 14 when I did some funky things with color to my hair. I remember feeling an urge to be different from everyone else. It wasn't that I didn't like who I was or my natural color, I just really liked being unique. It's not permanent, harmful, or ridiculously expensive, so I don't see the big deal at all.

i totally agree with this. it's like choosing what style of clothes to wear - it's just another form of self-expression.

I'm laughing reading this thread -- not that I have a problem with kids dying their hair, but I am approaching 30 and have NEVER dyed my hair. I'm realizing how very much in the minority I must be. Chat Icon Okay, a few times I dyed streaks of pink into my hair in junior high and high school with Kool-Aid, but I've never really dyed or highlighted my hair. Not against it at all - just have never done it. I will dye my hair when it starts to go grey for sure and I've considered getting some red highlights before then... but I'm happy with my natural color and am always afraid anything else won't go with my (super pale, freckled) complexion... so I have been avoiding it! Chat Icon

You're not alone Kara! I've never dyed my hair! I love my color - I probably won't ever touch it until I go grey - which I hope doesn't happen for a long time but we'll see. No one EVER believes me when I tell them I've never colored my hair - I guess because my hair is red?

I'm glad I'm not the only one! Chat Icon

No one ever believes me either because I have a lot of highlights... so in the winter, my hair is a LOT darker than it is in the summer. Also, if I go to a new hair salon, they always ask me if I want to touch up my highlights. Chat Icon I have brown hair, but a lot of red and blonde natural highlights in it.

My father is still a natural redhead in his mid-sixties. He didn't even start going a little grey until about 60! As a kid, I knew my mom dyed her hair, so I assumed my dad did, too. I didn't believe him that he didn't. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

She asked for it while I was getting mine done. So I thought about it and agreed that the highlights do look nice when the sun does it. It's very, very light and natural looking. It's not blonde streaks, it's more of a light brown.

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?

When I was 13 I wanted highlights. Mom said no. Older sister did them for me as soon as Mom walked out the door. Mom came home and loved them, so she wasn't mad. I've been dying/highlighting ever since.

If I had a daughter, I think I'd try to keep her from messing with her hair for as long as I could. Coloring your hair is like an addiction, once you start, you never stop. And no matter how good the products are, your hair is never the same!

I think 13 or 14 for regular color is ok i would wait on any kind of bleaching or striping the hair color till older.

If I had a daughter who was high school age & she wanted to highlight or dye her hair (a normal color), I think I'd be cool with it. Nothing extreme though (like crazy colors or anything like that).

I first highlighted when I was 18. That would be the age I would think appropriate for a young woman.

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?

I wasn't allowed to dye my hair until I was 18... on my 18th birthday I was sitting in the salon getting semi-permanent color.

I'm not sure when I will allow DD to dye her hair... on the one hand I don't want to be as severe and strict as my own parents, but on the other hand, I don't want her dyeing her hair and destroying her natural color. It never comes back as pretty as it starts out IMO.

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?

I work in a school. I have seen my own students (6) come to school with purple streaks. One former student comes by my room to ask me what color she should do.

As for me, my own mom wouldn't let me color my hair until I was 18, but she allowed color streaks from the time I was 14. I used Kool Aid and Manic Panic (ftr, Kool Aid works much better!)

So although I'm not a mom yet, I would definitely do strips of color at a young age but nothing like the whole head until late high school.

Since I am the parent & I will be in charge, I will not allow my daughter to dye her hair until she is 18. When my frends in HS were dying & bleaching their hair, I wasn't allowed and thank goodness because now i still have gorgeous thick hair. I have never dyed my hair & will not start until grey hair comes in. I'm 29.

I would say 50 , when her hair starts getting grayChat Icon

IMO 18 or older. No way I will let my DD color her hair when she is younger than that.

same here, I had temporary reddish highlights when I was 19 or 20, the one that you wash and wash and it's gone.
I LOVE my hair and hair color. Most people can't believe that this is my natural hair color bc it's so jet black....
I will dye my hair when I get old and it goes gray.

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?

I have an aunt that allowed her 10 year old to dye his hair green.

when *questioned* about it her reply is..."he's a good kid... if he wants his hair green, let him have green hair...'

she's right... depends on the kid. I will let my son do whatever he wants to himself if he stays the sweet, respectful kid that he is... (as long as it's safe of course)

it's just hair.

My mother always said I was NOT allowed to dye my hair until I was an adult. I respect my mother and never did it - I first dyed my hair the year I graduated college. I personally don't agree with pre-teens or young teens dying their hair.

same here. i dyed my hair (against my will - Thanks Rachel Ray) for the first time when i was 23. i hated it, i think theres a bit of thrill to dying hair at a young age.

I was 12/13 when I started using peroxide in my hair and heating it with the blowdryer to lighten it. Chat Icon I didn't touch it for the rest of high school. It wasn't until I was in college when I started dying it.

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?

I say 18.

I guess I am the only neurotic one on the thread about this, but I am concerned about putting all those chemicals on the scalp of a child. Maybe I am overreacting, but if the doctor told me it would be better not to dye my hair while I was pregnant, because it could harm the baby, why would I want my child doing it before they are fully grown? JMO.

I only started highlighting to start covering grey and then eventually to color. Chat Icon

Agreed!
I highlighted my hair for the first time when i was 16 i think, and have been doing either highlights or single process since. My hair has luckily remained strong and healthy.
My DH dyed his hair every color under the sun when he was younger - he even did his own leopard spots!
So, i agree, its only hair. As long as the kid is a good kid otherwise, then go for it.

However, i reserve the right to change my mind when the time comes that i actually have a kid, and have to make this decision for real Chat Icon

Neither have I!! Not even Kool-Aid (Chat Icon) or highlights or lowlights or streaks or ANYTHING. I don't like putting products in my hair; never saw the appeal. I like my hair the way it is and I always get compliments on how healthy it is!! Chat Icon
