Those who take anxiety meds...

...who precrisbed them to you?
A regular dr? A psychiatrist?

How do they go about diagnosing you?
I can't imagine they would just give out meds to someone who just walks in and says- yes I feel anxious, or I get panic attacks? Seems to me like that would mean anyone could get them- need it or not, kwim?

Any insight would be appreciated...

Re: Those who take anxiety meds...

Well, any dr. can prescribe them to you; your internist, your ob or a psychiatrist. My recommendation is that if you think you need meds for anxiety that you go see a psychiatrist. The reason is that they go over your history of anxiety and your symptoms and they can prescribe a medication or a combo of meds that will specifically deal with your type of anxiety. Once you feel you've gotten the correct combo of meds, there's no problem in having your regular doc continue to prescribe the meds. For me, I went to a psychiatrist for a year until we figured out the right dose of meds and the right type of med, then she got in touch with my internist and now she is the one to monitor my anxiety. If I ever feel like I need to switch meds or that they're not working anymore, then I'll go back to the psychiatrist.
I don't have any underlying issues, just chronic anxiety, so it's not that I need some sort of therapy beyond meds. HTH!

Yeah I think this is the route I'd like to take. Especially because I don't feel I need meds everyday or that I have unexplained panic attacks or anything like that.
I just find that in certain situations I tend to fall apart and throw myself into an anxiety attack. And it really affects my life when that happens. It's like I can't deal with anything unpleasant- for example- when my cat was sick and dying- I found myself dry heaving and getting short of breath and just falling into hysterics. To the point where I couldn't even help my husband help the cat, you know?
And forget it if I have to have an even minor medical procedure... going to the Dr throws me into a panic attack and I have come close to passing out from it.

I just feel like I need to speak to someone about why and if there is any kind of a mild med that I can take in situations like this to help me get through them like a normal person and not a basket case that can't function.
So I am guessin the pyschiatrist is the best first step....
