Milk Protein Allergy Moms
If you supplement or formula feed, did you try soy formula first, or go straight to alimentum/nutramigen or something like elecare. I am currently breastfeeding and trying to keep a dairy free diet, but I want to have some formula in the house for any emergencies.

I wnet right to Nutramigen AA since many dairy allergic kids are allergic to soy too. Though now I know he's NOT allergic to soy as I give him soy products at 10 months(edamame, soy yogurt, etc)

Re: Milk Protein Allergy Moms
my dd is severely allergic to dairy and did fine on soy formula. However, had we known they she was allergic, I would have probably gone right over to alimentum. (we didn't find out she was allergic until she moved onto solid foods).

My Dr had me go straight to Nutramigen. My best friend went straight to Alimentum with her DD.

Re: Milk Protein Allergy Moms
Yes, we tried soy and she was allergic to that, as well. Apparently, it's quite common for babies with a milk protein allergy to also be allergic to soy. So we ended up on Neocate, an amino acid based formula because she couldn't even tolerate the milk in Alimentum.

We went right to Nutramigen. That didn't help either so we ended up on Elecare. I'm not positive if she really has a milk allergy or not, but it is the only formula that she was able to gain weight on.
Also, the pediatric GI doc told us with cereal to only use Beech Nut b/c that is soy free. Gerber has some soy in it so if your baby is milk-protein allergic, stay away from Gerber.

Re: Milk Protein Allergy Moms
I just found out KJ has a milk protein allergy...I plan to try soy first...
my insurance does not cover alementium AA, elecare or neocate so those are out
If soy does not work, I plan to try nutramagin or allementium (sp)

My dd was put right on Nutramigen. It's been about 3 days, and she's doing great. I still mix about 1/2 breastmilk tho (I have a really big frozen supply!) Good luck!

Re: Milk Protein Allergy Moms
Her pedi recommended Alimentum right away. Unfortunately DD gagged on it like I was trying to feed her poison so we stuck with breastfeeding for the full year then I switched her to soy milk which she still drinks today.

Re: Milk Protein Allergy Moms
I tried soy as a last resort for DD but tried soy before Nutramigen for DS.
My DD had, I believe, a true milk allergy because she did HORRIBLE on Nutramigen/Aleimentum (it still has some milk proteins) but was fine on Soy (although many babies are allergic to this as well).
With DS we tried soy but he did not do well on it and did well on Nutramigen.
I think all kids are different so there is no one right way to do it.

Same for us. DS could only tolerate the Soy formula.

Re: Milk Protein Allergy Moms
My ped told us to use either Nutramigen or Alimentum, but my DS would not drink it. He would gag the second it got near him. Can't blame him...that stuff smells horrible!
Since he wouldn't take it, I tried soy and luckily he drank that no problem and wasn't allergic to it.

We found out that DS had a milk protein allergy when he was 3 days old. He was put on Soy Formula and is now on Soy Milk.
