feeling like the worst mom ever

dd has been having major sleep issues lately: tantrums in the middle of the night, frequent waking. she is also has sensory iand control issues. lately she has been driving me crazy! nothing that i can do satisfies her. if i put on a pink shirt, she wants the brown. i change it and then she wants the pink. she gets upset if i wipe her tears away. she is ritualistic about the clothes that she wears. i have just about had it. today i just lost it. she is home sick today, so it is magnified 100%.

i am feeling like a horrible mother right now b/c i just yelled at her. i have no patience.

sorry i just needed to vent. Chat Icon

you're human!

caring for a special needs child is just so challenging and you're entitled to your feelings and actions.

Hang in there!!!

Being a parent in general can be challenging at times. Please don't feel badly. I'm sure every parent has raised their voice to their DC at some point, even if they're typically very calm. It happens to the best of us Chat Icon !

It can be very difficult at times.
They lose patience and we try our best not to.

Being the parent of a special need child is so hard. It's like your patience is being tested every second. Then you feel guilty if you lose it because you know it's not their fault.

I think the demand on us is very high. We cannot be perfect 24/7 365 days. It's just impossible! We also have limits.

Sometimes DS is whining so much and since he does not talk, it's so frustrating.

I admit that I have put him in the crib for a bit so we both can calm down. I found it's the best solution when I am about to lose it.

Don't beat yourself up! we are only human with feelings too.

I have been there...there are days I feel enormous guilt for not having more patience w/Johnny. But we're all human. I just take the good days for what they are and focus on those and try to write off the bad ones...I can totally relate to how you're feeling!!!

What helped us a ton with dressing and certain control issues is a chart. I got this magnet chart at Target and if she cooperates with getting dressed, hair brushing, going potty, etc she gets magnets.
Most days she cares that the line has spaces. Some days she doesn't.
As a mom I've also had to let the control go with the dressing when I see it's going to be a battle. I think she wants to exert independence and I have to let her even if she looks ridiculous. She is pretty tactile defensive so depending on which way the wind is blowing really depends on what she can tolerate wearing.

As for the sleep....is your DD on the brushing protocol? That worked wonder for my DD and I think has helped my DS some as well although he still wakes.
My DD was waking 4-6 times a night to have her blankets fixed. They couldn't have any wrinkles in them. The fact that she notices made me think she was never calming into a deep sleep. Since brushing her 3 times a day she rarely wakes at night and her mood has improved so much from getting good sleep.

I think that's a great start. It's such a PITA but it makes a huge difference.

Do you have the book The Out of Sync Child Has Fun (I am pretty sure that's the title) It has SO many great activities for SPD kids and it's breaks them down by system (vestibular, tactile, etc)
I got mine for cheap on half. com.

We're thinking of putting a swing up in our basement for DD. She loves the swining and crashing into mats/beanbags. Not sure if that's an option for you. The Little Tikes disc swing is super cheap if you can rig it from a ceiling.
