Finding Daycare that fits our schedule - full time!

I don't know if Im posting for support or advice or commiseration or what.

I have just gotten off the phone with the 17th daycare that can't take my daughter, and I'm literally crying at my desk.

We're moving to the Baldwin/RVC area this summer and because of our work schedules, the earliest I will be able to step off the train at Baldwin station is 6:28pm. So I need a daycare that's open until at least 6:45pm.

Why is this so hard to find?

We can't afford a nanny, we don't have family nearby who can pick her up earlier, and I'm just feeling like I'm moving to this bizzaro world where it's unheard of for parents to work past 5pm.

Sigh. Thanks for listening. If anyone here knows of this mythical, magical daycare that accomodates working families hectic schedules, holler!

I know when I was looking, most places closed at 6.

Maybe when you call 18-24, you can ask if any of the teachers who work near by will be willing to take your DC home with them for a little bit?

Anyway you can not take lunch and leave work early? Maybe put DC in daycare closer to work? I'm not sure I'd want to take DC on the train w/me everyday. Could you drive part of the way into the city and catch a later train so you are closer to daycare on the way home?

I am shocked that there are no daycares with "after hours"!

I am not familiar with the area, just wanted to offer a Chat Icon

I used to work for Tutor Time (E. Northport) and we were open til 7.
I worked for another day care (Huntington area) that was also open til 7.

6-7 was considered "extended hours".

My DS started at Tutor Time in January. Last Year they were open until 7pm this year they changed it to 6pm. I work until 5:30pm so I am always rushing out the door to get there on time.

Wow, ladies - thank you so much for the support.

I do already work through my lunch hour in order to be be able to leave at 5:15 (which gets me off the train at 6:28). Unfortunately, I can't shift my hours any earlier because of the nature of my job.

I'm just going to keep plugging away and crossing my fingers that I can find one of these places that are open until 7 that are close to Baldwin AND have a spot open for a toddler! So many variables!

I'll have to check out Children's Nest... it seems a little far from Baldwin but maybe it's not too bad!

Seriously, thanks for the support everyone. It made me feel a lot better.

FYI Children's Nest is right by the Merrick train station, so you can park there (without a permit)

Try also JCC in Oceanside. I heard it's excellent

I also heard good things about Tutor Time in Lynbrook

My DS goes to Kiddie Academy in Syosset and I believe they're open till 7 so I'm surprised you can't find anything

BTW... welcome to the neighborhood. I'm in Lynbrook right next to RVC

I am not sure where you are in regards to RVC/Baldwin...but Bella's daycare is in Oceanside and their hours are 7-7 pm. We have had more than a couple of occasions where this has been a lifesaver because I also work in the city.

Re: Finding Daycare that fits our schedule - full time!

Exactly why I needed Tutor Time -
I have to drop him off in the AM at 6:45 at the LATEST (most places didn't open until 7 or even 7:30) and pick him up at 6 -

Tutot Time has extended hours in the AM (6:30 - 8) and PM (6 - 7:00)

is there one near you?

Hmmmm, the Tutor time in E Rockaway is open 'till 7... It's a little far away but I have to consider all my options, right?

Oceanside might work, too - thanks!! I will check that out, too!

You guys are way more helpful than anyplace else Ive tried already.

How sick is it that I can't get out of work a measly 15 minutes earlier? Then I could be at daycare by 6:30, and my options would be double what they are now! Ugh.

Tutor Time is right down the block from the East Rockaway station that has a lot...it's costs a few dollars a day for someone who is not a resident, but it's an option for you Chat Icon Up until this week there was a 5:31 train out of Penn that would have got you in at about 6:20, but it is in danger of being eliminated due to cutbacks...

ETA: there is a 5:55 train that gets in at 6:40 and it's about 3 minutes from Tutor Time
