The song is inappropriate and I would speak my mind about it, or pull DD from it. It is about a threesome.

im going out on a limb here, it is not that bad ladies... People in the audience are not going to look at the girls is a gross way and they don't wear their outfits out in public, it is a show it is a costume that they wear once if you don't like it then you should not put the girls in dance this is how it is and how it has been over the past years, keeping up with the time, My daughter was in dance until her studio closed this year and we are fine with what they do she does not wear the things outside of the house unless he is playing in the backyard and doing dress up or something... just my op...... i think there is alot of over reacting here and on the other post.

I guess you cant really judge the situation until you are in it. I mean I would NEVER be okay with my dd up on stage dancing to 50 cent candyshop either. I dont think its ONLY the costume for this mom. its the whole entire concept.

Re: innapropriate outfit for recital***UPDATED W/PICTURE & LYRICS

I've heard that song a dozen times and I didn't know what it was about until I read this thread... I don't think that most people will know.

And song or no song, I really don't see anything wrong with that costume for a performance. Everything is covered and the bottom part is shorts - I went to dancing school in the 80s when everything was a bodysuit cut up to the hip... this is a lot more modest.

If I think back to my recital days, I'm sure there were a lot of songs that now as an adult, had a totally inappropriate theme but no one knew at the time and all everyone saw were a group of adorable little girls dancing in costume.

That seems to be my DH's point of view as well. We also watched Lipglossjunky's video and what bothered him most in both instances was the song they were dancing to. As for me I think for both it's the entire concept of the inappropriate outfit, song and dance moves that would just put me over the edge.

I kind of think MOST dancing outfits toe the line; leotards, sequens, frills, tassles, etc

Re: innapropriate outfit for recital***UPDATED W/PICTURE & LYRICS

I don't have a problem with the outfit. It is not low cut, there is not belly showing. When I was in dance in the 80's I wore leotards as my costumes which showed the same amount of leg as this outfit. I think a bodysuit that is the modern take of a leotard.

As for the song, I had no idea that is what is was about until I read this thread. I could never even undertand any of the lyrics when I heard the song on the radio. Now seeing them I think they are inappropriate, but what can be done? Can you ask the school if they can use an instrumental version?

If it were my daughter, I don't think I'd have the heart to pull her out. She's been rehearsing for months and is so excited. I don't think I could take that away from her. But I would have a conversation with the school about future song choices.

Re: innapropriate outfit for recital***UPDATED W/PICTURE & LYRICS

I have no problem with the outfit, seems pretty standard and its a costume. I DO have a problem with the dance moves in this and the other post....I dont care if its a recital or not....there are other alternative moves that are not "sexy". Its just not necessary. I was in dance until I was 16 years old (mostly tap) but still, my sister did Jazz and there was NO sexy booty shaking then, in the 80s. I just dont see the need for it when there are a million other moves they could be doing. I think young girls are sexualized FAR TOO early these days and if you cant control the entertainment industry or the media..what you CAN CONTROL is your childs PERSONAL exposure to it. Its just that, like I said, there ARE alternative moves and they didnt dance like that years ago. I think it just goes to show you.

This outfit does not outrage me like the one in the other thread. I would probably pull the tassels off her bottom before the show. Screw the teacher, my kid is not wiggling her tassel-ed bottom on stage.

However, the song is totally inappropriate. I hope it is a Kidz Bob version like another poster suggested.

Sorry you have to be in this situation and have to make such a tough choice. Whatever you do choose, it's not going to be easy. Each side has it's pros and cons. Do whatever is going to make you sleep better at night.
I'm not sure what I would do.... given all the information you provided, I see this as a catch 22.

Just know that if you do decide to let her twirl in the recital, it doesn't mean you are setting the tone for the rest of her adolesence.

You should w/o a doubt talk to the teacher about her poor song choice.

Your an excellent mother wether you let her twirl or pull her out!

Most people don't know what the song is about (I didn't) or care to know, I think people just see it as another catchy britney song, especially the girls. The outfit doesn't bother me either, I think it's cute for a recital.

Maybe I'm just really laid back (DH too)???

Re: innapropriate outfit for recital***UPDATED W/PICTURE & LYRICS

I have boys, so I really cant say how/what I would do in this situation.

I danced my whole life and I couldnt even remember what some of the numbers were too/about...???

I dont "love" the costume...but could deal with it...

Can I ask though... is your daughter in an advanced class???? Is she possibly the youngest in this class???

If this is a clean, kids bop verison- the lyrics are a mute point... because then they are basically only dancing to the same beat, but an entirely different song (lyrically)

I agree with Lauren...

Here's the thing...the teacher probably didn't even realize what the song was about, it probably has a good beat to do their routine to.

I also don't feel the outfit is inappropriate. As the other posters wrote, it doesn't show much skin and leotards show the same amount of leg/booty.

The song..ehhh not appropriate but I don't think many even realize what the words are or mean. Maybe it will be the "kids" version.

Re: innapropriate outfit for recital***UPDATED W/PICTURE & LYRICS

I have a problem with both the song and the outfit. DH would also have a sh!t fit and said so. Maybe I am an old fart, but I prefer to preserve my child's innocence as long as she is a child. When she is old enough to go to a club and pay to dress herself in club clothes, she can go to town. If we are asked to foot the bill for that then Abby will be sadly disappointed and will have to get over it.

It doesnt matter that skin or is not showing, it is suggestive and children are sexualized way too early. Plenty of pervs get off watching ruffles on a little girl's rear. Sickening.

BTW, I have 8 year olds in my class who know what threesomes are, what golden showers are, what an al sex is and who drop the c-word on a daily basis. If parents think their kids have no idea, they are sadly mistaken. All it takes is ONE kid to spew the foulness on the school bus and WHAM-O - no turning back.

Re: innapropriate outfit for recital***UPDATED W/PICTURE & LYRICS

Another old fart here. This is the exact reason I pulled my older daughter out of dance at the age of 4. I was horrified by the costume and felt the whole year of classes was entirely about the show and not learning dance.

I'm sure not every school is like this, but a lot of the ones I'm familiar with are.

There is plenty of time for little girls to get the message that the world judges them by their bodies, I don't have to sanction and pay for this message while they are young.

I know this recital is all over by now but I just want to say this: I have my had my daughter in dance for 8 years and it has been a very positive experience. You have to be careful in the studio you choose. DO not send to one "Where the children dance behind closed doors" ! Do not choose one one "Where you do not get to hear the song" when they start dancing to it ! Also choose a studio where you can talk to the owner and have things changed if you do not like. I must add you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ABOUT COSTUME AND SONG !!!!! Please send her back to dance but at different school and one WHERE YOU CAN WATCH HER DANCE EVERY WEEK. Dance is a very good way to learn poise, confidence and be encourage good physical shape/ muscles for the future.
