"mom, I want you to stay home with me"

Claire usually loves day care, can't wait to go, play with her friends. She loves her teachers, they adore her.

Last night and today she says to me that she doesn't want to go to school she wants to stay home and wants me to stay home with herChat Icon

I explained that mommy works, that we have lots of time together do lots of fun things and she was fine, had no problems at drop off this morning.

But, it's stuff like this that makes me think hard about the choices DH and I have made for our family. I know that we are making the right choices, I have confidence in our "plan" for our family. I also know it has only happened 2x since she was born and I know that in 2 years she will be going to regular school and it won't be a "choice" of mine that causes her to say this since all kids go to school, but still, it hits hard.

ETA: Please-don't respond with, "this is why I could never be a WM"Chat Icon

I'm a WM too and ok with it. I do dread the day he says that to me. That's why in the summer I took a lot of long weekend to spend with him. Although b/c we're moving now I'm saving the days for the week we move.

RIght now I drop him off and he goes to play with his fav toy then crawls to one of his fav teachers to be picked up. THis is the part that I love seeing him in daycare and seeing how happy he is there

I hate this part too. I know Ryan has a good day at school - once he's over me leaving, but I get a lot of fight before I go.

This morning he said, "I don't like school. I miss you when you go to work" Chat Icon

We all have days when we question this stuff (that's what calling in sick is for Chat Icon ) Chat Icon

I am a working mom. My son is only 5.5 months old, but I know that it is inevitable that this is going to happen one day Chat Icon

Even though I am sad to leave him some mornings, I always smile as I say goodbye to him. I also tell him all the time why mom goes to work - even though he can't understand me yet Chat Icon

But like you said, you made the right choice for your family and that is what is most important Chat Icon

DS isn't quite that vocal yet but there have been a few times where he cries when DH leaves for work.

Breaks my heart. But I try to explain the same things to him as you did.

It just pulls on your heart strings!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm home, and my daughter (5) regularly asks me why I'm so boring. So, you can't win except by making yourself happy!

I'm so sorry...

You know, its funny because I'm so torn. Right now I drop DS off at day care and he doesn't even care that I'm leaving...which sort of hurts. But the alternative is so painful, also. Chat Icon

I said the same thing to my mom and dad as a kid and they told me they work so we can have a nice home and money to do things when school/work at out

I remember that talk like it was yesterday and its the same thing I will tell Logan when it comes up.

Re: "mom, I want you to stay home with me"

Ugh that has to hurt.

*note to self* Plan mommy & me days monthly if I can manage it.

I'm actually thinking of taking off on August 3rd to stay home with my little one and veg.

I love working. I love all the parts of it. I am 100% comfortable with what I am doing for her and our family. I am also the breadwinner here so its not even remotely an option to not work.

I know she's gonna hurt me like this though. Chat Icon

I'm still dreading the day she says "I hate you!" Chat Icon

Re: "mom, I want you to stay home with me"

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon It hurts - definitely stings when that happens. I try to do 2 things when it does - first, I make a point of taking a day off in the near future and having a fun day with the girls when I feel like they, and I, need it.

Second, I try to remember that, at the end of the day, I'm working to improve all of our lives, including myself, and that I am setting a wonderful example for my daughters that they can balance having a family and career aspirations.

And, as much as it hurts, there are other moments when I feel like my heart is going to leap out of my chest, like when Alex tells me she wants to be just like me, a lawyer, when she grows up Chat Icon Or, when she brags to her teachers about her mommy who helps other children Chat Icon

And, by the same token, it all balances out - there are days when Alex literally pushes me out the door at school, or tells me to go to work or go home while she plays with her friends. Or, days when Yael literally leaps into her teacher's arms in the morning.

It all evens out in the end.... Chat Icon

DS is on this kick lately too. Chat Icon It is heart-wrenching, and after I calmly tell him that it is ok to be sad, but I still have to go. I usually get into my car & have a breakdown.

But I think it is just a phase, and he'll soon realise that staying home with mommy may not be as fun as school
