HELP!! Biting Toddler at Daycare!!

Hi All. My 26 month old son started daycare two weeks ago. The first week was smooth and we had no problems. Last week, however, he started biting other children when they tried to take a toy he was playing with or he would bite them to get a toy he wanted from another child. Other parents are starting to get upset and I think the daycare is ready to kick him out. It's a really good program and I would hate for him to be out already. The problem is he hasnt had this behavior around his little cousins or at home. I talk to him and tell him that its bad, but without seeing him do it at home I think its hard to correct him. They sent him home early one day last week. I did some research and everything says its normal because he is showing anger or frustration, but I need to break him of this problem quick. I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone could give. Thank you so much in advance.

Re: HELP!! Biting Toddler at Daycare!!

The teachers should be working closely with him while he plays to avoid any biting instances although kids are so quick that it's hard sometimes.

DD was bit 5 times last year. They wound up moving one of the teachers out of the room and bringing someone else in. I don't know if that's what did it, but she hasnt been bitten since.

Good Luck!

Re: HELP!! Biting Toddler at Daycare!!

At DS's previous daycare he started biting a lot too. He was bit first and then started biting others. I even got him evaluated through EI, but he did not qualify - THey suggested eating more textured foods and also using a vibrating teething ring/toothbrush. We also bought the book teeth are not for biting and read that to him. Unfortunately, he still kept biting at the other daycare and I noticed some things I didn't like (there were never the same staff in the room/they didn't know about appropriate child development etc) I also asked for them to do a functional behavior assessment to determine why the behavior was happening (because I really wasn't seeing it at home) which they never did. 2 months ago, he was moved into a new daycare and has not had one biting instance at the new daycare. Definately ask ur daycare to do a behavior assessment! If they sent my child home every time he bit, I am SURE he would start biting more!!!!
