Re: Anyone else in nyc NOT have their street plowed?T
By the way, my general point (even though Mici thinks I am stupid ) was that during the start of the storm, DURING the storm, and after the storm, people were experiencing lack of heat, electricity, cable, etc.
Some of those workers had to report into work in order to assist those at home stay safe and warm. Some may have gotten stuck on the way to work or going home from work.
You need electricity and heat if you are stuck at home during a storm.
The whole thing is a mess. An entire, slushy, mess. I know tempers here are flaring, but I don't think anyone is really an imbecile for trying to go to work, that's all.
People always think it's just hospital workers and such that are needed during times like this, but there is a whole slew of others that are necessary to safety.
Personally, I mostly blame mother nature.

Re: Anyone else in nyc NOT have their street plowed?T
I am in middle Village and we FINALLY got plowed!!! I hope I can get to work tomorrow.
Something is definitely up! In every other snow storm I remember seeing the plows all night long. they would come up our block (which is a tertiary street) several times throughout the storm. This time round...not one for almost 3 days. Its insane! Not blaming the workers at all....Bloomberg totally F'd up big time!!!! How can you go on TV and say that the EMT's that got stuck in the snow should have parked their ambulance on a main road and walk to the house with the medical emergency is unacceptable!!! I have never heard of something so ridiculous!

did he really say that?? I didn't hear that. he can be really removed from reality!!! perhaps he should try that and see how it works for him. And what if you have to carry a patient?? do you carry them down all those blocks too???
yes things are up.. short men and stuck cars = lack of plows going down blocks.

I heard the same thing during the press conference.
And then I saw the scene where the ambulance was parked on a corner to walk to retrieve a patient and then it caused traffic blockage behind the ambulance....and, what do you know? In line behind the ambulance were cars all lined up, all waiting, and guess who else was stuck in line? a snow plow.
The poor plow guy was so frustrated. It's just a huge mess all around. Everyone is trying to do their best, and it's nearly impossible.

I live in Brooklyn. None of the streets were plowed . A lot of people were stuck. I seen mta busses and one police car. Hopefully it will get done soon. I seen the trucks but no one came down my block yet.

Understandable and totally agree... where i do have a problem is... not ALL those cars out there were out for this reason. if that was the case you would see all those cars out during other storms of similar magnitude.
there were a good amount of people stuck because they were out going places. there were far more cars out in this storm than other storms... so I just can't accept that ALL cars out there were out for good reason...
NOT ALL PEOPLE OUT THAT NIGHT ARE IMBECILES... but those out for no good reason sure are!!

Re: Anyone else in nyc NOT have their street plowed?T
Just thought of this ..... So many jobs are criticized for various reasons: - teachers make too much and have so much time off, nypd should make what suffolk pd makes, garbage men throw your cans everywhere, postal workers are late delivering mail or leave packages out in the rain, male obgyns are creepy (guilty of thinking this, but working on it), lipa workers respond too slowly, people who are volunteer firemen just do it to get a percentage off their property taxes and sit in a firehouse and play cards...if you work for cablevision and not verizon, you must be evil...... Train conductors make too much for 'just punching tickets".... Etc, etc. Truth is, unless you're in said job and know about it firsthand, people will assume what they want, and mostly out of frustration. Its not right, of course...and usually what people assume is never true. And while they may be judging your career or your spouse's career, rest assured someone is busy judging theirs. And so on and so forth. And if anyone really thinks that snow plowers are just ignoring their block on purpose, that's simply silly. I truly believe most people try their best at work, and any issues that crop up to the public's dismay is generally the fault of the power's that be - whether it's political or monetary reasons.

Re: Anyone else in nyc NOT have their street plowed?T
what if you worked for the dept. of sanitation in nyc for years, studied hard for the supervisor's test because you had a young family and wanted to advance in rank and pay, finally were hired after being on the list for years and then told you were losing your job, your pay, and your seniority that you worked so hard for years for on Jan. 1st 2011 due to budget cuts? Also, with no promise of ever getting rehired back as a supervisor, going back to a garage as a 'bottom guy', losing your pay, would you be so inclined to supervise the workers who will become superior to you next week?
pls don't shoot the messenger
i do agree that this storm was mismanaged and at this point we are all just people trying to get on with our lives...i live in queens and my street has still not been plowed...i did make it to work via subway

Why can't people complain about a crappy situation?
No one is blaming this guy or that guy, just the situation. It stinks for everyone all around - the people living in areas still buried in snow, sanitation workers working around the clock trying to get this place cleaned up, trying to get to work and get on with our lives (people cannot stay home from work forever), etc. Hate the game, not the players.

Re: Anyone else in nyc NOT have their street plowed?T
no one is an imbecile for trying to get to work.
but trying to get your ill equipped car down unplowed roads is NOT the height of intelligence. it is being foolhardy, and putting a lot of people in danger. people on my block were actually digging out their cars and throwing the snow into the street. hi. how is that REMOTELY helpful to anyone else, but you, if that?! imbeciles. yes, I am calling the people that I saw in action, imbeciles.
the city is BROKE. I think we are all well aware of that. and this is collateral damage.
and now there have been terrible tragedies associated with the storm.
and my belief, my sad belief, is that this is only the beginning. we don't look and think about cause and effect any more at any level.
Bloomberg, if he was in fact, trying to "save" NYE (which generates tons of money for the city. this is a HUGE tourist week) did not think of what would happen in the outerboroughs if they were neglected. and people, trying to get to wherever they "needed" to get to, abandoning cars. getting stuck.
buses too. a bus was stuck on Vanderbilt and Dean for two days.
two feet of snow is A LOT of snow. especially in such a short period of time. we've had bad storms before, yes, but those were in other times.
the city can't go bankrupt cleaning up snow. it's a cold, hard, fact.

Just saying:
Still now plow to be seen here in Marine Park Bklyn...and there is a DSNY Depot not even FIVE minutes away.
ETS: Just called my state senator (Marty Golden) and they took my addy/phone number/name and put us on the "list" that's a direct contact to DSNY.
I would recm'd doing the same and hopefully SOMEONE will respond.

they have not plowed my street either. I actually haven't seen any plows around my way, but they must have plowed at some point on Atlantic and Flatbush and Pacific street.
very weird, they way the streets have been chosen.
ETA: actually, the city own a good swath of sidewalk on my block that is still completely covered in snow, and people have been dumping snow on it, so we can't even walk on the sidewalk for most of the block. we have to walk in the street, where in the very least, the snow has been stamped down by cars passing over it.
thank heaven for small favors.

Same story by me. I did see some plows for the first time last night but only some main roads seem to have gotten plowed.

Guys, please be sure to post according to cranky kimbalina's standards of how NOT to drag a thread out. I know I am the only one who apparently didn't get the memo that I should stop posting, and apparantly, I was the one on this entire thread that needed to be scolded, so heed this as a friendly reminder. hopefully she has had a nice cup of coffee and some breakfast and is now in a better mood. :) sorry kimbalina, for not knowing how to post

Everyone can point fingers but frankly the city messed up. End of story. They should have planned and handled this differently. We are not the only city to ever get snow (look at upstate) nor has this been our first snow storm.
That being said... it takes a village.... yesterday DH, my neighbor and two other young guys from our block shoveled ALL the cars that were parked in the streets. They did what DSNY was too busy to do. Instead of complaining if everyone does a little something things will get better.

YUP! Cranky Kimbalina is sick of you and your threads... then when it cools off you are back with "I just thought of something" to bump it back up.
This entire thread is a dead horse. SNOW HAPPENS!! Maybe it is not being handled to you standards... then you know what become a Plow Driver strap one to your SUV and clean up your block!

my parents in Queens have not been plowed. NO CARS are blocking the street. A plow came near the block. Residents begged the plow to come down. Driver said NO. I dont know why though.
same here! the excuse of abandoned cars is BS in many situations! there are NO cars here, ZERO. WTH did it take so long for these streets to be plowed. there is no excuse for this. there have been other storms like this. Maybe we need some new people running this, bc something is VERY wrong. if this were a private company and things were things screwed up, everyone's azz would be fired!!!!!
