Cavities?
We discovered Emily's first cavity the other night. (She is 5.5)
She has an appointment with the dentist on Wednesday.
I feel like a bad Mom, like I wasn't on top of her brushing as much as I should have been. I know that she's a super quick brusher and I should have been making her brush more thouroughly...
Then I spoke to some friends with kids that are the same age and they all have several cavities.
Do your kids have cavities? Has anyone made it this long and been cavity free? I am 32 and have never had a cavity in my life so I was kinda hoping the same for her.

Re: Cavities?
My son is 7 and has always been cavity free. And he's not the best brusher!
My DD is 5 and she had 4 cavities at her first check up last summer! Two they just filled easily because they were surface, and the other 2 they filled while she had sweet air.
It's genetic. I had horrible teeth and DH has perfect, cavity free teeth!

Re: Cavities?
DD#1 is 10 and has no cavities(cross fingers) Sometimes it has more to do with genetics and not just teeth brushing. Don't beat yourself up. FTR: DD#1 only drinks water and we have never done fruit snacks(and things like that) I was told they are the worst for cavities

Re: Cavities?
My dd is 5.5 and went for her checkup 2 weeks ago and had 6!!! I wanted to die. We are avid about brushing her teeth and using a flouride rinse. I contribute it to genetics, i have horrible teeth. My ds hardly brushes well and he had no cavaties, go figure.

Re: Cavities?
DD age 5 = 1 cavity
DS age 5 = 6 cavities, one with possible nerve involvement! this is the kid that doesn't have a sweet tooth, won't touch juice and never eats gummy fruit snacks.
The ped dentist made me feel like a horrible, neglectful mother. He ended up telling me it was my fault for not properly brushing his teeth after his evening bottle as an infant. Hello, he didn't have molars while on the bottle! Go figure.

Re: Cavities?
Alex has two. The dentist explained to me that much of it is genetic - the shape of your teeth, how closely together they are, etc. Alex happens to have VERY "ridgey" teeth where food can get caught, and her teeth are VERY compacted together, so food gets lodged in between.
We started flossing, and using a fluoride treatment every night and it seems to be warding off any other cavities
And juice... NO JUICE... or gummy snacks. It's the worst offender!

Re: Cavities?
Try not to feel bad, it happens.
Nate had two cavities last year. The doctor said they were really small. They used to eat fruit snacks all the time, but since then I stopped buying them.
