I am the only person on LIF that doesn't mind a pop-in, I guess.
However, I don't have people in my life that make a habit of it or are super annoying. I really don't care how clean my house is if someone does pop in. If you want the house to be clean, wait for an invitation.
i feel the same way - its not rude or a big deal if someone just pops over
I don't mind at all! I love love when people come over!

I HATE it!!!
I think it's totally rude. I NEVER stop by anyone's house without calling first to see if it's ok.

Re: Unannounced guests
I wouldn't love it if someone dropped in but I would never send someone away either. Anyone that does should know they enter at their own risk.
I would never drop in on someone without calling.

Re: Unannounced guests
My in laws/extended family and their close friends are similar and its grown on me. I love them and don't mind the unannounced visits anymore. I could never not welcome them and almost always their unannounced visits make my day. His family is so much more warm than mine and its more of a community feel people coming and going. No one is entertaining anyone, just being together, helping out if they pop by in the middle of something they join in.
Sometimes someone will pop by like yesterday I had no pants or bra on and had to run quick to grab some sweats and coverup when his uncle stopped by... and spray the bathroom down real quick but overall family visits at anytime is welcomed and it works for us.
Congrats with the baby and good luck with your situation

Growing up family and friends always stopped over unannounced and they were always welcomed. The visit would turn into coffee or dinner. My parents loved having people over and still do.
It rubbed off on me because I dont mind unannounced guests at all. My door is always opened.
I do call or text friends before stopping over because not everyone welcomes unnanounced guests the way some others do.
Same here...it doesn't phase me at all and I don't find it rude. My MIL stops over announced whenever she wants to drop something off or just say hi. It doesn't phase me.

I agree 100%. I could never not answer the door to someone, or better yet put my DD jacket on and pretend i'm walking out. Imo THAT is rude.

Re: Unannounced guests
Unexpected guest make my day! I like it better, no pressure to make things look "perfect", and on the other hand it helps me keep the house from totally looking like a bomb went off.
Since I know I am the minority I will call or text others before I stop by.

I call first unless somebody has specifically told me to stop by, and I don't mind guests that stop by. We're all busy so I figure if i'm home and you want to stop then stop!

My SIL has keys and just walks in, lol, but that's how we roll. I hear you on the bra thing- esp. b/c I have huge flopsters. I like sprint into the bedroom for clothes.
If I were you I would have told my DH to get the eff up and entertain his mother!

Re: Unannounced guests
If my MIL came to my house unannounced I'd tell her we were busy and to come back another time...preferably after she's called to make sure it doesn't happen again.
I think its rude rude rude to show up unannounced to someone's house...if I am in the neighborhood I still call first to see if its alright for me to stop by. Everyone is entitled to their privacy and their schedule.

I don't mind it! And we do it every now and again to friends and all the time to our parents!
As PP said, my door is always open. If you stop by unannounced and the house (or me) is a mess, then oh well.

Re: Unannounced guests
I hate hate hate this!!! Just this past sat, my inlaws decided to just come by to drop tomato plants off. Of course I was just getting ready to take a shower and had no bra on. This is one of my biggest pet peeves! Why cant people call before coming over?
Edit to add this little gem of a story : A couple of years ago I was home alone, in the shower and had the bathroom door wide open. I thought I heard something and when I looked out the door I saw someone walk by! I screamed bloody murder!! Turned out my MIL decided to just stop by and since I didnt answer the door she used her key!

I couldn't agree more. It's really rude. I'd never show up at someone's home without calling them first. It's just showing some consideration.

Re: Unannounced guests
We welcome company almost anytime... but i do expect the call or text before someone just rings the bell. A random stop by would not really bother unless the person did it all the time.

I don't mind having company but I want some notice so I can get ready, clean the house, etc.
I can't stand when people show up unexpectedly. I have to have things in order, that's just me.

I agree with you. She should call first.
From now on, I'd ALWAYS be on a walk until she gets the hint.

eeek! gail! did she ever do that again?? why did she still want to come in when it was apparent that no one was home? I'm figuring if you ring the bell and there's no answer then no one is home. granted you were in the shower. but why still go in??

Re: Unannounced guests
UGH! My mom is notorious for this! One time I remember we had my little cousin and DH's little cousin staying over. They are close in age and we have them over for sleep overs a lot. It was 11:30 PM and we FINALLY got them to sleep on the air matress in the living room and my mom and my aunt show up to say hi!

I woudl HATE this. My house is always a wreck, my bathroom always filthy- I need at least 30 min to run around and straighten up.
SOOO rude!
Unless you are one of those people who's house is always clean and are always sitting around fully dressed and presentable, I can't see how you could like this.
D-i-t-t-o!
DH's family doesn't understand why I'm not more welcoming with this kind of thing. It's because with some people, if you give an inch, they take a YARD. We've had certain people over and they wind up staying until MIDNIGHT on numberous occasions!

Reading some of these responses is amazing. I guess we really are the minority
I just find it amazing that people only clean when they have guests coming over. Really???
I clean "daily" because I can't live in filth. Isn't that why most people clean their homes?

Nope. I do NOT have the time to clean the house every day. Yes I leave the house with my PJ's on the floor and the bed unmade. Besides, what if my hubs and I were and my MIL knocks on the door????
