Transition To Crib.... How... Am I Doomed

DS is going on 4 weeks. So far he will ONLY sleep in the Rock and Play Sleeper. If I try to lay him in his crib he flails and freaks out. He will not sleep there. How do you transition to the crib? When? Am I doomed now? DS1 slept in his crib since our first night home and has always been a terrific sleeper. This one is TOTALLY the opposite. What do I do? How do I get him in his crib?

Thank you for any btdt stories and/or advice. Not only will he not sleep in his crib but he doesn't even give me 3 hour stretches of sleep and having a 4 y/o too I'm exhausted and sad most of the time.

Re: Transition To Crib.... How... Am I Doomed

I kept DD in the Rock N Play Sleeper until she was about 4 months old. then I propped the crib up with a large book on one end and some how she just took to it. Before this point she would fuss and wake up maybe after being in there for 5 minutes, I just kept trying and then at the 4 month mark she was suddenly okay being in there. She woke up like 4 times the first night, 3 times the next and now a full two weeks later she wakes up once and its usually because she is hungry (sometime between 5-6am) and then she goes back to sleep until somewhere around 9am.

I am not sure if there is a trick but try propping up one end...

We just transitioned DS out of the rock and play and into the crib at 3.5 months. He no longer sleeps through the night (but this also coincides with the 4 month sleep regression Chat Icon). He had some trouble figuring out what to do with his legs and feet since they were inclined in the r&p. It took time, and I put the r&p away, so that I didn't use it as a crutch when we ran into trouble. It's been about 2 weeks now, and he's doing alot better! Keep with it, it's worth it in the end!!

Oh, another thing I did before he slept in the crib was to put the r&p in his room so he could get used to all the sensory elements of that room, since he had never slept in there before.

Re: Transition To Crib.... How... Am I Doomed

You are not doomed! Neither of my boys slept in their cribs until they were about 5 months old. The first guy would only sleep in his infant carrier or a bouncy seat (had to be reclined due to reflux) and the second guy loved to sleep in his cradle swing.

We did move the swing to his room when he was 5 weeks old, so he would get used to his room. We also shut off the swinging motion once he was asleep. I started to put on a sound machine in his room whenever he slept.

I tried the crib for naps first, then overnight sleeping. I didn't even attempt to transition them until 3 months, and at first they woke up, but after a few nights they did fine. They are both great sleepers (one is 3.5 and one is 17 months)!

I say at this point, you do what you can to have him sleep. He is still safe, and the sleep is good for him, and good for you!!

Swaddle! Seriously it's the only thing that has worked for both of my kids. DS was swaddled for almost 6 months and DD is 10 weeks and swaddled. She slept in the rock n play sleeper for the first 6 weeks and then we put her in her bassinet for 2 weeks and now she's in her crib sleeping flat with no problem as long as she's swaddled. I recommend the miracle blanket.

Chat Icon I swaddled both of my kids for as long as I could and it did the trick during the transition.

Is the Miracle Blanket different than the Swaddle Me?

Same here...even when DS was swddled and he broke out of it, he needed that swaddle feeling when he first laid down in the crib...now he has no problem with the crib and i did the crib right around the 4 month slee regression and actually went back to the rock and play for a week...when i noticed he was still waking in the middle of the night, i went back to the crib...then did CIO...he was not a happy camper, but is doing great now...that was only about a month ago!
