Re: has anyone gotten into a car accident while their insurance was lapsed?
I friend of mine did a few years ago, ended up having to pay for everything to fix his car because he technically had no insurance because it lapsed, there was no coverage for the time of the accident.

they can sue you personally if it was your fault. If it was their fault..go thru their insurance company and it wont matter..

I don't know how long it was lapsed for, but there is a small grace period (a couple of days), so if you are still in that time period you can have it reinstated and it will be like there was never a lapse.

If you received notice that the insurance would be cancelled by XXX date, and did not make payment or follow through with whatever the reason for the cancellation was by that date, and the accident happened after that date, you are responsible for all costs associated with the accident.
If the other party had insurance coverage, their company will likely attempt to subrogate their losses by suing your personally.

Re: has anyone gotten into a car accident while their insurance was lapsed?
Why was it lapsed? (no payment or non renewal) ? How long was the lapse? Can the policy be reinstatement with no lapse? (aka with payment, most will, but not all) Is the party that is uninsured the at fault party?
Ultimately it is the responsibility of every car driver on the road to carry enough Liability insurance to meet state minimums for the benefit of bodily injury and property damage done to others. If you do not carry enough limits (or none at all) you will be held personally liable for those damages. Putting aside the legal side of not carrying insurance to start with, that party can be held financially responsible for all of it up to but not limited to lawsuits.
I’ve been hit but an insured driver. I wanted to personally flog him. I wanted to stomp on his ballsack and watch him squeal in pain. He nearly killed me. Ultimately I had uninsured/underinsured coverage on my policy that helped pay for my damages and he ran before I could find him (back to Mexico, because he also happened to have no driver’s license). But yes, if I could have found him, I’d have gone after him for all my medical and vehicle damages.

If your insurance lapse is long enough they will suspend your registration. If you are driving with a suspended registration you can get a ticket which is a misdemeanor not just a violation & your car can be impounded.

Everyone pretty much gave you all the information you need to know, but you may also be fined by the DMV for the lapse, depending on the length you went without insurance.
As previously mentioned, if you don't pay the fine they can suspended your registration.

Driving without insurance is a big no-no. Firstly, you can get pulled over for something as minor as going over the speed limit and get fined, get your car impounded, and your license rescinded/ And if you get into an accident and are found at fault you will be responsible for any medical attention or repairs required by you or the other party. This affects your automobile insurance quotes in future.

Re: has anyone gotten into a car accident while their insurance was lapsed?
You're going to get fined by the DMV, and if it was your fault, you will be sued directly. If it was the other car's fault, you can recover damages through their insurance and you will still get fined by the DMV...and its a lot. Driving without insurance is a BIG no-no. Not only that, your registration will be suspended until you pay the fine and if its past due over 90 days your license will be suspended as well.
