Potty Training question for btdt's or anyone who has an opinion...

so potty training is going really well in our house. we are having fewer and fewer accidents and he is really starting to come and tell us when he needs to go. AWESOME, right?

well.....it was totally awesome until bedtime last night.

luce still takes a bottle at bedtime (sometimes 2) it's a holdover from nursing to sleep that I was not going to tackle just yet...my goal was 2.5 and he only turned 2 12 days ago....so anyway

last night he takes him milk, then hands me his bottle and tries to get to sleep. I know I put him down too late b/c we went out and then he had to eat and he got over tired, so it's harder for him to settle down.

well, it took him so long that he had to PEE. so then he's telling me PEE PEE, PEE PEE, POTTY...but he's almost asleep. I gave him a lame "it's ok, you have your pamper on" but he was freaking out (he didn't want an accident)

ok, so what do you do here??? He's dong EXACTLY what he's supposed to do...telling me he has to pee and wanting to go on the potty.

but I knew that would unsettle him. Chat Icon

I ended up running with him to the bathroom, he made on the potty and we went back to bed. it took him two minutes and another half of a bottle to go back down but he did finally go to sleep.

so, the question is...when you are potty training and they have to pee after "lights out" and are still in diapers at night, what do you do?

I wasn't planning on even trying to night train him until he stops taking a bottle...and I am not sure we want to tackle everything all at once.

i love that he is doing so well on the potty. I definitely want to keep enforcing that positively...but I don't want bed time to become a disaster either. he usually falls asleep after drinking his milk..he'll hand me his bottle and snuggle into the bed and fall asleep so I am hoping this never happens again Chat Icon but if it does....

wwyd?

thanks!

Take him to the bathroom. You don't want to teach him that it's okay to pee in the diaper. He wont understand why at bedtime its okay and when he's playing and doesn't want to stop to go to the bathroom that that isn't okay. Consistency. It's a pain, but if DS wants to go potty after lights out we take him to the potty. I totally know he uses it to prolong bedtime, but I have to be consistent.

Do you put him on the toilet right before he goes to bed? It's going to be somewhat of an issue as long as he's drinking alot before bed.

I say that if he asks to go to the bathroom then take him.

Definitely let him go to the bathroom. When training, it's important for him to know that whenever he needs to go, he goes to the bathroom.

I agree! If he asks to use the bathroom definitely take him! If he asking to go while he has a diaper on he's shwoing that he is really understanding the whole process and not taking him might confuse all of that.

thanks. you are right. consistency needs to trump all.

yes, I put him on the toilet and he peed right before bed. I really think had he fallen asleep like he normally does he wouldn't have known any better.

maybe I should buy a potty for his room so I don't have to bring in out lol. a bedpan Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yea I would take him to the bathroom. When we first trained Kaydyn she would still wear pull ups at night. One morning we were running late and she insisted she didn't have to go to the bathroom. I left her pull up on(my ILs get the girls dressed in the mornings when we drop them off). Well halfway through our commute she starts screaming that she has to go to the bathroom. I tell her she still has her pull up and she freaks. She knew she wasn't supposed to go in her pull up.

So if he's telling you he has to go then I would just take him. It's only a couple of minutes and it's great that he's getting the idea that he needs to go on the potty any time he feels like he has to go.

would you consider moving the bottle further and further away from bedtime?

so something like
bottle
read a book
sing a lullaby
go potty
bedtime

this will help with the potty issue AND eventually, down the road, when you choose to, when the timing is right, when luce is ready, when the stars align, when the moon rises in gemini. . . it will be easier to get him off the bottle? Chat Icon

that literally got the ROTFLOL.

and yes, eventually, when the cow jumps over the moon and the dish runs away with the spoon, eventually that is my hope. that the bottle will be moved back and then eventually extinguished. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

he may be ready for that. I may need to catch up to him. and that is fine. I will put on my big girl...knickers Chat Icon ...and help him be the big boy he wants to be.

btw, he wear underwear now. these to be exact. Chat Icon Chat Icon

This is exactly what I was thinking!
You know a lot of times we can take our decision making from our children's prompting. If he is having to go to the potty a time or two once he already hits the pillow, then maybe it's his body's way of letting you know to start cutting back on the bottles.

Sometimes they know even before we do! Chat Icon

lol. Cute pants!

Don't mean to hijack, but I just stopped DD's nighttime bottle and I think it was harder on me than her. Yes she whimpered for the first few nights as I put her bed and looked over at the glider like.."Um Ma...why aren't we sitting in that having my baba?" But at 17 months I felt it was time. She wasn't letting me brush her teeth after and that worried me. Now I just need help getting rid of the morning bottle. THAT she will freak out for.
Sorry...not potty training related!

Ditto to this..

the only way to eliminate him going to the bathroom is by getting rid of the drinking before bed which to be honest, at that age is more out of habit and his way of self soothing rather than need (because I know he is eating and drinking well all day kwim?)

oh absolutely...I just don't have an issue with him doing it a little while longer but I have to weigh that against his potty training. if we need to stop the bottle, I will. even if it makes us cry. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

D to the Itto, if Nick is laying down and asks to go potty (even though he does still wear an overnight), I take him. Even if it takes a little longer to go down. It will upset him more if I tell him no and don't take him.
