Re: DSLR camera recommendation/help
I have the Nikon D3000 and HATE it!! My sister got the D90 at the same time and there is a huge difference. I am getting the Nikon D7000 for X-Mas and it's gotten great reviews!

Re: DSLR camera recommendation/help
I know a lot of people love Nikons but I LOVE my Canon Rebel XS. The newer one is the xi2 or something. I just didn't need video on mine so I opted for the cheapest one and wanted to spend the $ on lenses vs the camera body.
I've always used a Canon so I was comfortable with using it...

Re: DSLR camera recommendation/help
if you can, go to B&H or another camera store and play with them...I'm a Canon girl personally, but the new Nikon 1 looks awesome (it's a P&S)

Re: DSLR camera recommendation/help
I think as a beginner the D3000 is great! I love it. It takes great photos and I just bought a new lens for more zoom. I have gotten so many compliments on my photos that people thought I had a pro shoot them.

Re: DSLR camera recommendation/help
I would NOT buy the D3000. Read the reviews. For one thing the photo quality is not as good as others, Ken Rockwell calls it Nikon's worst DSLR.
For another thing it does not have an internal focus motor, so you'll have to buy lenses with their own focus motors. It's a bit limiting.
It does seem to have a cool "guide" mode that helps you choose the right settings, but once you get past that, you'll be looking for another camera. I'd consider the D90. It's a few years old so you can get a good deal on it, and it's still a great camera. I have had the D80 for almost 4 years and I was experienced before that (Had been shooting with a 35mm DSLR for 10 years prior) and I'm just thinking about upgrading, not even for features or because I've outgrown it, but because I'm tired of one particular known issue with the D80, which is overexposure.

Re: DSLR camera recommendation/help
To answer another question, MP doesn't matter that much. They keep coming out with crazy high MP cameras, but it really doesn't matter unless you're planning to blow things up to poster size, or take a photo of a group of 20 people and then print one person's face in an 8X10 kind of thing. You're not going to see any DSLR under 10 at this point for the most part and 10MP is more than enough.
ETA: Also, at that point, you're more likely to be limited by the sharpness of your lens than MP. JMO
