has his stool ever been tested for blood?

isn't that what they're doing when i bring in a poopy diaper?

yes but has he been tested before? have they ever confirmed blood (prior to changing to Alimentum)? this way, you could use that as a baseline. if there was blood before but no blood now, that is an improvement.

was he ever diagnosed with a possible milk protein allergy?

he's been tested a total of 4 times. 3 by the ped and 1 by the GI.

There was never any blood in the stool. Not before the alimentum and not after either.

how do you get diagnosed with a possible milk allergy?

it is a combo of symptoms and blood in stool. perhaps it isnt a milk protein allergy (i know you DO NOT want to hear that)... could it be a lactose allergy?

how many different formulas has the baby been on so far and in what time frame? and also, did try the mylanta? sometimes that works too. sometimes going from one formula to another too quickly and in such a short amount of time can do this too. it's just too much for their little tummies to handle. might not be an allergy at all, might just be irritation

usually they can diagnose it by looking at the poop

here's my thing though. IF he has a milk allergy...

because maybe he doesn't have a milk allergy. if you see he is worse on the alimentum, if i were you, i would just continue the good start. when did you start that? see how well he does in a week..............

Re: Poop (w/gross pic), milk allergy & prilosec question

My DS (5 months) has a milk allergy. Around 1 month, he started getting fussy. He was/is a good baby and it wasn't just normal baby fussy (my DD was colicky, I know) it was something different. I asked him to be tested for milk allergy at 1 month. Negative. At 2 months, I brought it up again at DR apt (stomach looks bloated, crying in pain- but is a good baby, something is off) she said normal for the age, 2 months. THE NEXT DAY- very similar diapers (like yours) which we had had for a while but now had spots of blood. I guess it takes some time to damage the gut and the blood to show. He really did not get better from the Nutramigen (was on Alimentum for 2 days only- kept puking) for about a week or two. HOWEVER- he can ONLY have RTF. The powder makes the mucus come back!!!!! I discovered this xmas eve (he was 3 months) and I used powder b/c why not. IMMEDIATELY he reverted back. Switched back to RTF and he was fine. Maybe try RTF? Did you try Nutramigen? I agree too with PP that you need to do the poop cards for micro blood. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i would give it a little more time. and specifically besides that diaper what are the symptoms? i would definately try maalox too: has an antigas in it, and might help to settle the stomach. if the issue is reflux, i would try cutting down the ounces you give per feed and then just feed a bit more frequently............

Have you tried Colief? I had the CRAZIEST baby on the block -- it was a miracle cure. The theory is that some babies have a Transient Lactase Deficiency and Colief puts lactase in the bottles to help them digest the milk. I use it in formula and before BFing. We are currently weaning her off it as she is 6 months old now. They sell it at CVS.

Re: Poop (w/gross pic), milk allergy & prilosec question

It could be a soy allergy. DS had a severe MPA and soy allergy from birth. Alimentum almost put him in the hospital. Made him 100X worse then all the other formulas he was on. We were switched to Elecare and that did the trick.. Stop using the Alimentum and go back to the good start..

We only use RTF. We don't even touch the powder stuff. With my 1st son, the powder made him worse so now with our 2nd son, we don't even want to try it. Chat Icon

the poop cards are just when you take 2 spots from the poop and smear it on the card right? Or is it something different? Yeah we've done those...

symptoms of milk allergy? not sure. Many mirror reflux.

-fussiness
-cries during feedings (fussy during feedings).
-sometimes he pushes away the bottle when we know he's hungry.
-screaming fits
-runny poops
-never content (does that count?) Chat Icon

ETA: yes we do mylanta here and there, but that seems to give him diarrhea sometimes so we don't do it too often.
