Flying to Florida with my dog

We are going to Florida next week. I REALLY want to bring my dog. She is only 12.5 pounds. I just cannot imagine being without her for a week. My kids want to bring her too. My husband thinks we are making a BIG mistake taking her with us.

Yes, Florida is a short flight BUT we have a connecting flight. The entire trip will be 5 hrs. BAD for a quick flight.

We are staying at my parents house and they do not mind the dog coming.

What would you do? It seems strange putting a dog into luggage ?????? I just tried it for about 5 minutes, she layed down in it.

What do you mean, luggage? I am very confused. You would need to put your dog in an appropriate pet carrier that will allow for his ventilation, safety, etc. Do you plan on alerting the airline you have a dog traveling with you (I am not sure how this works btw, traveling with a dog on a plane) or are you thinking about sneaking the dog on the plane?

While I hate leaving my dogs, I would NEVER take them on a plane if they had to be boarded and left my sight. I would be worried they would get injured if you board them...or the crate will open and they will get lost. I have heard of stories like this all too often.....

Is the dog allowed under the seat and will the dog be with you at ALL times?
Your dog can be injured or suffocate if not in a proper pet carrier and if not in a proper location on the plane. I just personally would NEVER take my dog with me on a plane if they were going to leave my sight for one second but if you get approval and your dog is in a proper carrier under your seat, I say go for it. So is this what you mean and is this allowed?

Just trying to help, forgive me if I am wrong or just not understanding!

I have a soft carrier and YES she would be under my seat. I would NEVER let her be without me. It is a airlines approved doggie carrier.

I guess luggage was the wrong word. I did notify the airlines that she is coming with us.

Yes as long as you knew the dog would be with you at all times then I probably would.

Re: Flying to Florida with my dog

If I were you, I would definitely bring her. I went to pick up my dog when he was a pup and flew home with him. With the stopover it was closer to 7 1/2 hours. I had to pay a fee of $100 (it was each way but I only flew home with him.) Just make sure she is VERY exercised before you get on the plane. That way she'll be tired and not have to potty! Have fun!

You did buy a ticket for the dog, right ?
You can't just bring the dog along as a carryon, most airlines have restrictions about the number of live animals that can be in the passenger cabin.
Prices varied too among airlines.

MIL and FIL used to bring their cats to Florida, and I booked their flights.

Re: Flying to Florida with my dog

we traveled with a brand new puppy under the seat. We went to Knoxville to get him.

We got an approved carrier and he did great, EVEN with a layover.

If you are staying at your moms and she can pitch in, thats great.

But remember you are paying an extra $125 each way for him to be in the cabin.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WHATSOEVER SHOULD YOU PUT HIM IN CARGO.

Yes, AND you have to have a resrevation for the dog as well.

You also have to bring proof he is fit to travel (from your vet) and you have to have updated rabies shots.

Check your carrier and see what the restrictions are and what you need.
