Re: sneakers hanging from neighborhood power lines?

I'm pretty sure there are way more drug deals than "sneaker on the powerline" alerts.

They should really work on a better system.

Re: sneakers hanging from neighborhood power lines?

The drug dealer concept makes absolutely no sense, at least not anymore. One, why would they announce their presence to the police? Two, with so much electronic media, why would they resort to sneakers on a power line, instead of an anonymous Facebook account, or Twitter feed, or something like that?

The thing that makes the most "sense" is the purely meaningless vandalism/prank/do it for fun concepts.

Someone told me it was done when a kid got his @$$ kicked they threw his sneakers up there.

That's what I was told too. And I grew up on LI (born in the 70's) and have seen this going on forever.

Social Media can be easily tied back to a person/persons, and is admissible in court. Sneakers cannot.

To answer the OP, I think it is is all of those things, drugs, gang turf, memorial, prank...I don't think it is any one thing.

Where we live it is to remember a person who was killed. They throw their sneakers up on the line where they were killed. I find it heartbreaking because we have so much violence that is truely visable with those sneakers. I saw it a lot working the road.

Re: sneakers hanging from neighborhood power lines?

I used to see shoes on the power lines when I was a kid (grew up on LI) but I never heard that it had anything to do with drugs or gangs. This is the first I'm hearing about this.

I thought it was just something that kids do to be annoying.

I always used to see the click-clack ball toys on the wires too.

Re: sneakers hanging from neighborhood power lines?

Some of it is kids just being kids, sometimes it's to signify a death, then other times it gang related.

I always thought it was just kids being kids. . . and the added benefit is that it scares suburbia into thinking that its due to gang violence, drug dealing etc lol

Eh it's not a very good drug buying signal considering they didn't get the word out that that's what it meant. Chat Icon

I always just thought it was kids being kids. In fact, some of the kids on my block did this once to another kid's shoes!

It's such a 70's thing to do! Every time I see it, I feel like it's 1977 Chat Icon

Same here. Back then (the 70's) and even now I never even gave it a second thought. I just assumed it was kids being kids.

I've seen variants on this. I can't remember where I was but on some ski slope, on my way up the ski lift I saw a tree that was covered in bras...maybe it's some kind of boobie turf war? Chat Icon

Please people.. don't start worrying that there's a pair of sneakers hanging by your favorite school/park/street and that means that drugs are being sold nearby
trust me.. drug dealers are not advertising their services by putting sneakers on telephone wires, at least not anytime in the past 30 years!! Chat Icon

anything you see nowadays is purely kids just being kids

as a side note - when i was growing up (in Boston), it was always considered something that was done in memorium to someone that died..

there's a pair hanging at the end of my very suburban street, conicidentally right outside a house where 3 teenage boys live..

I gotta slightly disagree with this.

Yes, I agree with the fact that you shouldn't start freaking out about it.

If you're fully going to believe that everything you see is just kids being kids then your just sticking your head in the sand and ignoring the fact that yes... sometimes they do have other meanings that unfortunately aren't so innocent.

Is it just kids being kids sometimes... of couse.
Drugs are available and sold everywhere. From the poorest to the richest areas of every town, city, village etc. Suburbia has tons of drugs going around as well.... it's just not as obvious.

If a teenager wants drugs, it's easily available to them. The difference is they choose not to. There are gang area's around that aren't obvious to the average person. All that matters is that kids are taught to have common sense anywhere they go.
That's really what's most important. Not what the sneakers might signifiy.

Where did i say that everything i see is kids being kids?? I was referring to most incidences of sneakers hanging on wires.. that's it
I was also trying to alleviate the fears of some of the other posters who see people post that it may mean that drugs are sold nearby (which in itself sounds ridiculous, i mean its not very specific is it.. where are they being sold, how would you know which house?) and reacted to it with worry.

I am fully aware of the drug problem in suburbia, i was merely point out that seeing a pair of sneakers hanging on a wire doesn't necessarily mean anything..
as i said, there are 3 boys who live in a house on my street, and there are sneakers hanging outside their house (or maybe its the old woman who lives across the street.. who knows) and i would be more inclined to think that those sneakers are there because they're teenage boys, not because they're drug dealers

trust me, i am anything but naive!

Re: sneakers hanging from neighborhood power lines?

Snopes take on it:
http://www.snopes.com/crime/gangs/sneakers.asp

All across the United States, you'll encounter discarded shoes hanging from wires, poles, and trees. Theories as to what these shoes signify abound, but, contrary to what one hears, there's no one right answer.

Who put the shoes there and why? The list of explanations goes on. Suggestions include:

* It's the work of gangs marking the boundaries of their territory.
* Bullies take them off defenseless kids, then sling them up out of reach as the ultimate taunt.
*Gang members create an informal memorial at the spot where a friend lost his life.
* Crack dealers festoon wires to advertise their presence in the neighborhood.
* The shoes increase wire visibility for low-flying aircraft.
* Overly puffed-up boys who have just lost their virginity or otherwise passed a sexual milestone look to signal the event to others.
* Graduating seniors mark this transition in their lives by leaving something of themselves behind; namely, their shoes.
*Kids do it just because it's fun. And besides, what else are you going to do with a worn-out pair of sneakers other than tie the laces together and toss them high?
...

Yes, I know you were referring to just the sneaker situation. A lot I was saying was just a general statement which also referred to other things people mentioned on the post. I just fully copied yours b/c it was long, thought out, and it was right above (or below) mine so it was the easiest to hit quote from.

I actually just went to a workshop at work and they explained that it now signifies a place where you can go for drugs.
