Blood in stool
This morning I noticed small strings of blood in DS stool (12 weeks). He has been on Nutramigen for approx 8 weeks and we have been to the pediatrician several times for what we were told was colic and reflux. We started reflux meds about 2 weeks ago and saw huge improvements in the screaming/crying fits that used to go on for hours. The past few days things have started to get worse again. Tons of crying, screaming randomly, etc. And now the blood all of a sudden. Any thoughts? We're seeing a GI specialist next week but wanted to see if anyone experienced something similar. I feel so bad for my little man Thanks in advance.

Re: Blood in stool
Nutramigen still has milk in it! Sounds like you need either elecare or neocate

Re: Blood in stool
That was us....I think it was like 5 weeks we saw blood in stool. Continued with nutramigen and they switched us to Neocate after a few days. It did take a while for the blood to be fully out of the stool after starting the Neocate (like a month! --because of all the damage to the intestines we think). But now he's much better. We had the same--reflux and a lottttt of crying. Good luck. Bring a diaper into the ped (they always told me to put the one w/ blood in the fridge if I wasn't getting up to the office within the hour).
ETA: we also saw a GI because of the blood not disappearing right away and all of the crying, even on the Neocate initiially. I would still go to the GI but get into your ped first thing Monday and maybe they can get you on Neocate.

Re: Blood in stool
Thank you!! How long after the new formula did you see a change in the crying? We're going nuts over here and I hate to see him like this. It's been since he was 2 weeks and I just know something isn't right

Re: Blood in stool
DD had blood in her stool and her ped told us that she had a milk allergy. She was on Similac Alimentum and we noticed a difference right away!

Re: Blood in stool
Milk allergy! My DS went through the same thing, except the ped couldn't figure it out for a little over 2 MONTHS! I BF him, and the dairy i ate or drank was being passed to him. We went to Cohen's ER 3 times, the 3rd time they said for me to stop eating/drinking dairy. The following week we went to the GI specialist and put DS on alimentum. Noticed a difference almost right away. Some babies need a prescription formula (with no milk protein). Hope you find out what it is soon!

The ped said we would see a "new baby" in 2-3 days but we didn't. That's why they ended up sending us to the GI. The crying went on for another 3 weeks at least, but now that I see his personality he is really a difficult temperament and high maintenance and I think it may have not been all the milk allergy and reflux and just his temperament. But by 3 months things got easier. It's so hard I know what you are going through. It will end though. Good luck!

Re: Blood in stool
did you use the powdered formula of nutramigen. Its the only one with the probiotic in it that helps heal the gut and stop the blood in the stool.
However, if it is a severe allergy you will need an amino acid product like nutramigen aa or elecare
The protein in nutramigen is completely hydrolyzed - so it goes undetected as an allergen - so yes it is still milk based but hypoallergenic.

Re: Blood in stool
my little one is on alimentum and still fussy....I am so happy to have seen your comments....because I am so torn....I don't know if the fussiness is because that is just his personality or is something else really going on. However, the doctor did mention that he might have a little reflux going on. When would your DC's fussiness get worse?

I knew we had a reflux issue when he started to fight his bottle. He'd take sips then screams. Or he'd throw his whole body back and scream. He also is always congested which the dr said is the reflux. The meds did help with all those issues, but the all day crying has continued. Worse time is after 5pm. Thankfully he does take two good naps a day. From everyone's comments it seems like we're dealing with an allergy that Nutramigen would not take care of. Good luck on your end!! Hope you find some answers too.
