Re: getting rid of the paci

I was told by various people to do different things. I just took it away cold turkey.

I will admit it was very hard for me and for DC but after a few weeks DC forgot all about it. I think it depends on how dependent they are on the paci too. DC had it all the time. So I think that is why it was so hard for DC to give it up.

thanks. I may also do cold turkey. Its funny they are around so he sees it and wants it.he does not have it during the day at daycare, but at home he looks for them. So we may hide them and see what happens

Re: getting rid of the paci

With my DD - we did the Santa Claus comes and gives it to new babies...she was 2.5 yrs...it was wonderful..she was old enough to get it and the next day she told everyone where it went and never gave us a hard time! Never looked back...

My DS Was also 2.5 yrs...but it was the summer...the day we took it away cold turkey he had gotten in trouble and my DH threatened to throw it in the garbage...when he didn't listen..he actually did..I thought it was going to be a nightmare...but it wasn't ... The next couple of days when we asked where it was he would go over and point in the garbage...even when that trash was taken out days before...heehee...but he also never gave us a hard time...

Both slept through the night the very next night! I originally wanted it away at 2 ...but when it worked out that Santa was coming for DD at 2.5 yrs..we waited and it all worked out..so we also decided to wait until then with DS...I swear waiting that extra 1/2 yr made the difference for them to know that it was REALLY gone!

Re: getting rid of the paci

We did it cold turkey right after she turned 2. Anytime she asked for it, I would just change the subject to distract her. She cried twice. First day was a few minutes, 2nd day was barely a minute. The third day- she said "binky?" I said "no, that's gross". She said "ok" and forgot all about it.

Weeks later she found one in her toy box and said "mama, what is this?" I said it was garbage and she threw it out!

i think that is totally up to you..

before kids i was anti-binky...
then with DD I was like..this is nice...we'll wait til 1 yr...then at 2 yrs..she ONLY used it for bedtime and naps....it stayed in her crib..so i pushed it to 2.5...no regrets!!!!

then we did the same with DS...on his 2nd bday it stayed in crib at all times...never left...no regrets!!

so i changed how i wanted to handle it 3 times..haha..just to let you know the day i got rid of the binkies..was the day the naps stopped Chat Icon Chat Icon so i personally like them to nap past their 2nd bday so with DC #3 i will prob do the same schedule as DC 1 and DC 2

ETA: my ped and my ped dentist were both ok with this schedule...for us..and they do not have any mouth/teeth problems what-so-ever!!! Chat Icon
