"Black Friday" keeps getting earlier & earlier

I was having a conversation with my mom today, and made a comment in passing that really got me thinking. She casually said "I predict Thanksgiving will be gone in a couple of years. It's just going to be another day to shop, like July 4th"

Sears & TRU opens at 8pm,
Target opens at 9pm
Tanger opens at 10pm - all Thursday night.

It just makes me sad in a way that spending time with family isn't held to the same standard as it was when I was a kid. Now stores are opening earlier and earlier THANKSGIVING NIGHT!

I understand some groups go together as a family & it's like an event for them, some employees don't mind because its holiday pay.

When did a cashmere sweater for $49.99 become paramount over spending time as a family and just slowing down? Not only that but, by the time Christmas is actually here I'm so sick of it. It's just overkill at this point.

Sorry vent over. LOL. Am I the only one that feels this way?

I DO spend time with my family, we are done with Thanksgiving festivities by that time anyway. I actually spend MORE time with my family bc when we all would have gone home to our respective houses, a bunch of Aunts and Cousins are out shopping together like lunatics!

I feel bad for the employees. They deserve a day with their families before the madness begins. I used to try and boycott stores that opened on Thanksgiving day (or even midnight) but it's getting harder and harder.

Re: "Black Friday" keeps getting earlier & earlier

I agree. I hate black friday. I don't care how good the sales are, it's just not worth it to me to leave T-Day dinner early to wait on a huge line. That being said, DH and I went to the mall last year b/c there was a great deal on cookware at Macy's. We were in and out in less than 30 mins. I told DH that the only way I would go was if he dropped me off and picked me up right in front so I didn't have to walk a mile in the cold and if I didn't have to wait on line. We ended up finding a spot right in front, ran in, found the cookware, DH waited on a 10-15 min. line while I practically hid in a corner away from those on a shopping mission lol and when he was done, we left! It was well after midnight though.

I would never ever leave dinner early or sit on a line to wait for a deal. I also refuse to go into a mall or shopping center from Thanksgiving - New Years!

ETA: We do drive around after midnight to see the lines in front of Target & Best Buy. Free entertainment! Chat Icon

I hate that stores open on Thanksgiving, my family refuses to go shopping that day because Thanksgiving is a day to be with family-not at the store with family.

ITA.

Here's a petition started by a (soon to be former I bet Chat Icon Chat Icon ) Target employee, asking that they reconsider opening at 9 pm on Thanksgiving.

Re: "Black Friday" keeps getting earlier & earlier

I have never gone shopping on Black Friday, I hate the concept. I went to Roosevelt Field on one Black Friday by accident (forgot about it completely) and it was a horrible experience.

No deal is THAT good that I'll stress about find a spot to park in, the merchandise I want, and then wait in a long line just to save a few dollars. I'd rather shop online.

The fact that it's starting on Thanksgiving Day instead of the day after just reinforces my feelings. I don't ever want to be so materialistic that I will sacrifice family time - or my sanity - for scouting out deals. Also, I feel so bad for the employees who don't have a choice and have to work that day or risk losing their jobs. Chat Icon

Re: "Black Friday" keeps getting earlier & earlier

I gotta be honest...I felt EXACTLY as you did. I thought it was disgusting, people should be with their families etc etc...and then with people FIGHTING over items meant to be gifts...even still that disgusts me. However, last year we went to VA to spend our 2nd thanksgiving with my mom. I thought we would all just hang out in a tryptophan coma for a while...then drink a bit by the fire, play some xbox or wii together and call it a night. My mom mentioned she had plans to go to wal-mart. I thought she was insane! She asked us to go, my sister declined but I went with her just to be an extra set of hands and security god forbid anybody try to mess with my momma. I went with my mom and her partner...and actually had a good time! The deals were CRAZY good. I had no intention of buying anything bc i was broke...but the prices were so good that i had to! I was able to buy a few really cool gifts for people like the crayola dome for...I believe it was $8. a waffle maker for like $1. I do think it's important to make it about family...but i feel like we did...we had a nice dinner, hung for a bit, then went shopping together and had fun and got some good deals.

Also, some of those workers really enjoy working and the $$ and they NEED the extra money. I feel bad for the ones with children or families who are forced to work but i think many times (I was previously a retail manager for many years) the workers are asked first to write their names down if they want to work it and receive overtime...only after that do they begin to decide if they need to add more people. Unfortunately getting into retail it's something you know going in and unless you specify that you absolutely cannot work those holidays before taking the job you are subject to them

Problem is that people go shopping on those days. If people would just stay home instead, the stores would not continue to be open on TG. Personally I avoid shopping on TG because its wrong and dont go on black friday because I cant stand the crowds and many of those "deals" are not good bargins anyway.

I will NEVER shop on Black Friday.
Even if the stuff was free.
And by the way, they have the same deals online.
From my couch.
in my pjs
No line/no wait.

And honestly, the deals are never great.
Except of course for the ONE 55 inch flat screen they have at best buy for like $500 that everyone camps out for 18 hours to get on Thanksgiving rather than spending time with their families.
And tramples each other for.
Merry Freaking Christmas!

I don't know if it's true or not but I've heard that some stores mark up prices like a week or 2 before so it looks like you're getting a phenomenal deal but really it's not much different than a usual sale.

I am that employee

(editted to clarify: Our store is open 4pm thanksgiving DAY and closes at 11pm that night, which means we won't be home until close to 1am)

My full time job is obviously closed on Thanksgiving. My part time job is not. We open at 4pm and close at 11pm. It is a given EVERYONE is working on Thanksgiving. I'm going to get paid time and a half. Given that the store doesn't open until 4pm, I'm totally ok with it. I did ask that I start at 6pm and since I volunteered for it, they will most likely honor that request. Especially as my 'normal' available for a weekday is 6pm anyway.

We have expectations to triple a normal day's sales that day. Every manager will be on duty and I'll be stuck behind my register non-stop.

Gonna be a BLAST!!!! Chat Icon

Plus we're gonna open an hour early just for 'us' and our families and shop to our hearts content. We have special deals for just us (the employees). I can't wait!

As far as thanksgiving goes? I dont care. I'm part American Indian. The whole holiday is a little offensive to me anyway. Yes, I love hanging out with the family and watching the game (seriously i do) but those extra hours at time and a half are gonna make xmas easier on us. I plan to do thanksgiving with the family in the morning and roll my bloated self into work and walk off that unnecessary bloat.

Thanksgiving to me is just like any other 'holiday'. Memorial Day, Labor Day, President's day. Its a day off but not a big deal if I work.

Sunday was Veteran's and I worked.

As far as Xmas coming sooner and sooner.. WE FEED that issue. So many people come into the store upset that we don't have much left for thanksgiving. Well that was all sold out the week before halloween. What are they doing now? Buying up BULK stuff for xmas. Ok so you just sold us out of that garland thing. Guess what the next person has me do? Call every other store to find them. I stare at them with a giggle in my head. They complain that its too early to be doing xmas stuff then in the SAME breathe tell me, Well I guess I better buy it all now before its too late.

Its not the season as much as it is the 'good deal'.

Our store manager says we will keep building up to Thanksgiving day and black friday then it will wind down.

Sunday was CRAZY busy at our store. so if that's any indication.... folks LIKE to buy early.. so the retailers supply the demand.

I NEVER go shopping on Black Friday. It used to be somewhat fun now it's ridiculous. I won't support it. It turns people into madmen and takes others away from their families when they feel obligated to work. What really got me was a few years back when someone was trampled at a Walmart. Come on.

I feel bad for the employees of the store. If someone chooses to go shopping Thanksgiving night, that's their choice. Personally I would never go Thanksgiving night, but I do enjoy going on the Friday. I have gotten some good deals, and I finish all my shopping in that one day so its worth it.

My husband is a retail manager. He has to work on Thanksgiving until 2:00 and then he has to go back at midnight. I know that he is not the only one who has to work-(cops, nurses, airport personnel etc.) but it still stinks! It helps that we live close to his job and that we will host it. (However, his schedule doesn't stop his mom from showing up at 11:00 am! Chat Icon )

It doesn't bother me.........it's not like you HAVE to go out shopping and if there are people that want to, so be it. I like to just hang out all day/night on Thanksgiving and I am not about to run out to the stores but I have family that does and they love it. They said its actually fun running around and getting good deals. I go out on Black Friday and poke around but I am not up at 5am waiting on a line for a specific sale. I just go out to go out.

Retail will ALWAYS go hand in hand with the holidays and as long as there are people who are willing to go out and shop the retailers will accommodate. Doesn't ruin my holidays or upset me, I don't think all these early Black Friday sales are a big deal. Your holiday is what you make of it. Chat Icon

I will never fall for those slick marketing tactics, I hate the retail experience on a REGULAR day, never mind that clusterchinga.

Truth be told I also hate my family so I spend the day zoning out online and getting all my fat pants ready for prime time

And this, dear friends, is why I will patronize PC Richards over any other store- even if their prices were slightly higher.
