my ds who is 3 qualified for full day pre-school through cpse but we have not been able to find a preschool opening for him especially since it is mid year. He will get speech and counseling.
His biggest issue is he is very self-directed and does not do good with transition or new people. He will cry and cry and cry. When we started preschool a regular one he cried for hours everyday. So we stopped.
Since we haven't found a school they will give him speech and social skills counseling at a place and then a SEIT at home a couple of hours a week. I'm afraid with all the new people at once he will not settle at all. Should i stagger the start or just jump all in. His speech has greatly improved his speech teacher was surprised he qualified.
Any advice is appreciated.

My son started at 2 very self directed & strong. He cried and yelled for the first month or two. He had a short attention span struggled with speech and language. The worst thing you can do is delay any more time for services I wouldn't stagger either. What I did was sit with him until he got comfortable with home services. School will handle him there. It will not be easy at first i remember thinking one of the teachers being too tough looking back she wasnt thats what he needed. My son needed someone fun but stern. You will see the progress!

thanks - he had speech at home for the past year but never really clicked with the teacher I think so we had to sit in everyweek and many days were hit and miss. We will give it a shot. I am hoping it will help him and he will mature all at the same time.

Just wanted to add start thinking of positive reinforcers you and the school can use to get him to focus for services favorite snacks, toy, stickers, mini m&ms etc
The very first program my son had was to just sit lol if he sat for 5 seconds that was huge in the beginning and he got a snack.

I wish bribing worked. When he doesn't want to do it he doesn't care what the bribe is. He will do without before he cooperates.

My DS started half day school at 2 and full day a few months before he turned 3. It was great for him. I would start all of it at once, because then he will have one transition instead of several. The special needs preschools are trained to handle your child, so I wouldn't worry about sending him. My DS was in daycare before he started school (and then was there for afterschool) and while they loved him, they weren't trained in dealing with a lot of his issues.
