From the pics it looks like you are a bit too close to their driveway. I would guess from their wording of "keep it up" that they might feel that you park close often. They have probably been stewing about it and today was the straw that broke the camel's back? Maybe in the future just be a little more careful about parking too close and park somewhere else if possible.

Looking at the pics, my first reaction is, you are definitely blocking the driveway.
Sorry, but, I'd be annoyed too.

Re: What woul you do if someone put a note on your car?

I sometimes park on a side street near the train station - its not permit parking and anyone can park there.
I had a person who lives in the house come out once and ask me if i could possibly not park in front of her house (there's probably about 4 spots in front of her house) as she has several children with cars and they need the spots.

I said to her that i'd do my best to not park directly in front of her house from now on but that if those were the only spots, i may have to park there sometimes.
She grumbled about commuters parking in the street, but I told her i live in the town and pay taxes there too and was sorry, but i had every right to park there too.

Then when i started parking on the side street next to her house instead, i got a note left one day on my car telling me that i had parked too close to the car in front of me and that i was an idiot who didn't know how to drive. I was on a corner, so had plenty of space behind me, and was indeed very close to the car in front of me. But what the idiot lady didn't know was that the car in front of me was my husbands and that i wasn't going to cause any issues with him getting out because we'd be coming back to the cars together!
I thought it was hilarious that she chose to yell at me for blocking in a car that wasn't hers! Chat Icon

As someone who often has their spot taken by people going to the train station or other places, it's really annoying. I've been tempted to leave notes before, especially because there's a park across the street where they wouldn't be taking anyone's spot. I have a kid and a lot to carry in and out, so to have to find parking elsewhere because of it is annoying. I'd find another spot to park.

Someone on the subway once told me that my perfume was bothering them (and I don't think I wear a lot or anything abnormal). I responded to her that being smushed in with crowds is a part of pubic transport, and if she couldn't handle it she should consider another way to get around.

I would tell you that you should consider housing that includes a driveway or garage. You have no right to a street parking spot!

Exactly. You do not own the roadway, so it is not "your spot." Nervy.

If it were me, I'd walk up, ring the doorbell and ask the person who answer if they wrote the note and why. For protection, I'd probably record or videotape the confrontation with my phone.

The note is definitely creepy. You have every right to park on the street. It's possible the people in that house put the note but I wouldn't confront them about it or resond to the note in anyway. You never know what kind of crazy person left the note. Since its the first time this happened, I would try not to be alarmed and try not to park in front of that house if at all possible or if you do park there, make sure to not block the driveway not even an inch. It's a shame you would have to do that but you will be staying away from the person who left the note. GL!

Although the note is creepy, I think you are a bit too close to their driveway.

My neighbor actually calls the police on cars parked on our street because she feels they may be stolen and dumped. I had to talk her out of calling the cops on another neighbor's car once...

People used to park nearly halfway in our driveway when we had use of one. It was ridiculous. Thank God my DH drives work vans so he's used to maneuvering out of tight spots. We never EVER left a note or said anything unless they were directly in front of the driveway. There's more than enough room for them to get out of their driveway and if it WAS them, why would they just write "keep it up"? WEIRD. You're a better person than I, I'd intentionally "keep it up." After seeing the pics, I do think it might be a tad too close and could make it difficult for them to get in/out, but they could have been MUCH nicer in their delivery than a creepy note.

If that's not your house, I'd say it was definitely from that house. In one picture (it could be the angle) it seems like it would be difficult for them to get out of their driveway.

PEOPLE - you own the house..NOT THE STREETS SURROUNDING YOUR HOUSE! I hate this sh*t. I think you parked fine, AND if a centimeter was in their driveway they could have said it A LOT NICER.

While I agree people do not own the street and think the "no neighbor you can't park in front of my house is BS".

From the pics she is def too close to the driveway and I believe there are rules an regs about how close you can be to a driveway and corners and such.

That note was creepy but you are way too close to the driveway. It must be hard for them to pull in/ out

Re: What woul you do if someone put a note on your car?

So thanks everyone for their feedback. Few things to clarify...

I dont Always park in this spot. So I dont think of it as my spot... just a spot of many on the street. I can tell you that if the last time I parked specifically there it was last month... but I didnt intentionally park in a manor to block him... so I do own up to that. I was freakishly late yesterday and that was the last spot. Normally I am earlier...I honestly thought he/she had space to get out.

I probably wont park there anymore...and I wonder how many other folks have gotten the same note. I agree with many that I just think the note could have been worded differently.

The area I live in is full of coop bldgs and mixed with single family homes... some of the coop bldgs have parking... others dont... assigned and not... restrictions to the # of vehicles you can have and no restrictions etc..so I feel the fact that I park on the street although there is parking in my specific coop group is irrelevant...

I'm a note leaver because people constantly block my driveway. It's an old fashioned driveway so most think its too small for a car and block it...but that note is CREEPY! Don't park there anymore if you can help it...there is a huge difference between please do not block my driveway in the future (or something to that based on the situation) and keep it up!

Re: What woul you do if someone put a note on your car?

I got a note once! I used to park on the street when commuting and always the same spot with no issue. One day I decided to change spots and got a note that said, "park in front of your own house". I wrote them back (in lip liner b/c I had no pen) and said that you don't own the street and its not my fault you bought a house on a main road, lol. Needless to say I never ever parked there again because I didn't want to pay for auto damage! It still irks me though!

Eta- I left the note on the sidewalk !

Creepy...

Do you always park in front of the same house? While completely legal, I know it annoys some people.

I agree. Once I had a car parked in front of my house (out my front door) for over a week. It was so annoying. I like to park at my house and it was my neighbors friend who parked at my house and shared a cab to the airport. It was so rude.

But I would not write a note. A few more days and I was going to report it abandoned.

it does look difficult to get out... our neigbors always park in front of our house... and recently a few inches over into our driveway.... not cool. yet we've never left a note or said anything...

I don't miss the days of trying to find parking. From the pics even if he could get out, it totally looks like you just made your own spot and that it's obstructing his driveway. As a homeowner I would be pissed if someone parked like that in front of my house. I agree with not saying anything to the homeowner and just not parking like that again. GL!

PS: owning the parking spots in front of your house is my favorite long island phenomenon LOL

Yessss. This is something ill never understand! I grew up in the bx and it was a great day to just get a spot on your block!!! Chat Icon

I know. The parking spots threads always make meChat Icon I grew up and live in the city and if I get a parking spot on the same block as my building I am in heaven LOL

To the OP that is a totally creepy way of telling someone they are blocking their spot. Much better ways to go around it but to be on the safe side I would find a new spot. People are just crazy and you never know. I've seen people get into fist fights over parking spots.

I agree with the other posts it does look too close almost blocking the driveway. But they could have left a nicer note. I once half blocked a driveway bc I was alf asleep and in a rush and a note was left on my car. I felt so bad.

Honestly I would file a report because its sounds like a threat...

Eta: didn't realize there were pics, it doesn't look like you are blocking them but that looks like a very tiny driveway so maybe it's hard for them to get in and out. Can you park somewhere else? I still think the not sounds of the threatening tone though. I'd try to be more courteous if possible

Re: What woul you do if someone put a note on your car?

I understand that "no one owns the street" but whatever happened to common courtesy for your neighbors? IMO, that trumps "not owning the street" any day. These are your neighbors, be kind and considerate of one another. I grew up in a neighborhood where EVERY house had the parent and at least 2 kids driving at the same time. So a lot of times we all had to park in the street. We ALWAYS made a point to NOT park directly in front of someones home or directly behind their driveway. While some people get annoyed at people trying to OWN the street, I find it equally annoying to not be considerate of the homeowner. No, you don't HAVE to be, but why wouldn't you be? Just bc they don't own the street?

Re: What woul you do if someone put a note on your car?

so I think its creepy like many of you have said...I told DH and he asked if anyone said anything to me and my answer is was no. He absolutley said under no circumstance does he want me trying to find out who wrote it... he said he will deal with it and if anything as several of you said - we will hold onto the note and see if it happens again
Let me put in context where I park - I am not close to rhe train or anything. I live in a gated coop neighborhood. we have 1 to many cars for a parking permit as do many of my neighbors so we park across the street on the side streets in the neighborhood. Almost all the houses have garages and driveways... I try to park on the main road - its metered but by the time i get home and leave in the morning I dont have to worry bout the meters. However I dont work Thursdays and Fridays at the moment so I park on the side streets so I dont have to come down with DS and move the car.

Here is a pic of where I parked

No offense, but from the pictures you posted, you are extremely close to that garage. It's difficult to swing out when a car is so close to your driveway, I know this from experience. It's either the person who owns that house or garage, or the person across the street that may have a difficult time backing out with your car there. I don't think they should have left that nasty note, they could have been much nicer than to threaten. But I think you are WAYYYY tooo close to that driveway, and it's not fair to the person who uses that driveway.
