Car seat position

The other post has me thinking, my dd is 1 and she sits rear facing, but in the back seat behind the passenger side. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee, so a large car, please remind me why she isn't in the middle?

If someone hit that side of the door wouldn't she be safer in the middle?

Also how long should I keep her rear facing? I read better for her to have broken legs than a broken neck or spine so I know I need to keep her that way for a while, but what age?

Car seat position

I have my DD in the same spot as you and I'm thinking of moving her to the middle too. I had always heard the pass side was safest but I never heard the reasoning behind it so Im a little curious if anyone knows. I have done a lot of research on forward and rear facing so b/c of that, I hope to keep DD rear facing until she is at least 3, hopefully 4. Current safety standards state they should be rear facing until 2 but science shows otherwise.

Re: Car seat position

you have to check your car manual to see if you can put the seat in the middle, but yes, it is the safest spot

the longer you keep them rearfacing, the better. i bought a seat that has very high limits and hope that they will make it till 3-4 ( i know the seat will last that long, i hope the kids do)

Car seat position

My car cannot have a child seat in the middle position regardless if it is RF or FF

FIL has a Grand Cherokee and when we just had DS 1- we had his carseat in the middle - the manual doesn't say anything about not being able to have it installed there.

It was more difficult to put him in there but, it was safest.

Now - the seats are on the sides since there are only 4 LATCH attachments.

Re: Car seat position

Most cars you can install in the middle, it is safer there, I think the statistic is like 40%. You probably would need to use the seatbelt to install and not latch, since the majority of cars don't have center latch.

As far as rearfacing, the recc is for a minimum of 2 years. The nhtsa reccs until 4 or until the seat is outgrown rearfacing. My kid will be rearfacing until at least 4 or longer if he still fits.

Re: Car seat position

Most cars on the road the center is NOT possible. Over 50% cannot do center. Depending on the car and if the seat is rear or forward facing the middle may or may not be an option. Many car manuals will say the center is a location, but that is not the case.

The majority of SUV's cannot have center installation. The split of the seat comes into play in many cases. Most upper end cars cannot have seats in the center. The Jeeps do not work well in the center.

Many cars the center is not truly center but off to the left or right of center. Also in some cars the center seat belt configuration is too narrow to accommodate some seats.

Small cars cannot do rear facing in the center because if touching or interfering with the driver seat.

If we choose side we normally choose the passenger side for a variety of reasons including fewer crashes are on the passenger rear than the driver rear.

Long and short of it is that a properly installed seat on the side is safer that one not placed correct in the center. If you have a specific vehicle that you have a concern with, I will let you know what problems may exist.

Depending on the year of the Jeep - the center is not an option.

Rear facing should be until at least 2 years old, but you can always go past that to the listed rear facing weight on the side of the seat.

Thank you so much for this information.

My car is a jeep grand Cherokee limited 2014.

So I can leave the car seat rear facing behind the passenger seat until she is 4 if she still fits?

Leave the seat rear facing on the passenger side for your car.

I will be honest - that most likely will not be the case - get to 2 years at least then we can reevaluate from there. One last piece of information - what seat do you have and what is the rear facing weight limit?

I have a britax pavillion. I have to check its rear facing limits.

Also my mom has the same car seat in the same position for her Infiniti g37x. I am pretty sure it is a 2012. Could possibly be a 2011. Is this the appropriate spot as well?

Would you be able to tell be about. 2012 Hyundai elantra?
I currently have my seat rear facing on the passenger side. We just switch dd from the infant seat to a convertible seat. (Evenflo symphony 65 lx)

The Elantra and the Symphony work best on the passenger side due to the space needed, you can use center when you switch forward facing if you wish.

Infinity G37X - This is a new midsize sedan - the center is actually off center to the passenger side. You would have to use the seat belt to install in the center and as a result the stalk to buckle up the passenger side would be covered by the child seat. You may find the seat belt path a bit wide for the child seat so yes, I most likely would place the child seat on the passenger side. The passenger side installation will not be against the door as the LATCH actually favors the center of the car.

Re: Car seat position

My SUV cannot have a carseat in the middle regardless of FF or RF. You have to check your manual or go to one of the car seat places.

It also depends on the number of kids and car seats etc.

You are correct with the exception that most car manuals list the center as a viable location when i fact they are not.

Re: Car seat position

My car seats are rear facing until 40lbs and my twins will be rear facing until they are 40lbs. They are 2 and 24lbs each. So they will be rear facing for a long time. I dont see any reason to turn them when it is safer for them to be rear facing.

I wish I could frame this comment for my fitting station - I had a parent last week that was insisting on turning a 9 month old forward facing - did not happen but it took me a while to get through to the dad.
