Seriously? Since when is BLACK FRIDAY a holiday??? um since.... NEVER? I worked in finance for ten years, not once was black friday a holiday. I was expected to be at work. Maybe for teachers it's a holiday but not for any other professional that I have ever met. Thanksgiving is a holiday. Black Friday, not so much!
Almost everyone I know is off on that Friday. Most companies consider the day after Thanksgiving part of the holiday weekend and shut down. The only people I know who work that Friday are in retail, banks, or medical offices.
My DH is a professional and is off that whole weekend, including half a day on Wednesday. His company also shuts down from Xmas through New Years.
My point is, plenty of professionals are off for more than just the holiday itself...............not just teachers.
I am not off it's not a federal holiday....if it ain;t federal my boss isn't letting us go

Also, let's be realistic about what Thanksgiving is... a holiday celebrating how we raped and pillaged the natives of this country. We're super thankful for you guys teaching us how to grow corn though, but stay in that corner we reserved for you. /QUOTE]
Actually it was a celebration of the pilgrim's achieving their goal of religious freedom. Despite was later transpired, the first Thanksgiving was a 3 day long feast celebrating a harvest and the kindness of their neighbors who helped them survive that first year.
You're effing kidding me, right? A three day long harvest festival? The first Thanksgiving was declared in 1637... Governor of Massachusetts John Winthrop declared a "Day of Thanksgiving" to celebrate the return of a band of English hunters who had just slaughtered 700 Pequot Indians in what is now Mystic, Connecticut. This happened to have occurred during the Pequot's Green Corn Festival, which bears a striking resemblance to the fake Thanksgiving story your kids are taught in school... except the only white people there came in the middle of the night to rape, burn, and kill.
Do a little research... what you learned in school is the worst kind of whitewashing of American history.
ETA: I'm sorry if my post came across rude, but this is a very hot button issue for me.
The first official Thanksgiving was held in October 1621 to celebrate the survival of the 1st year.
I have a history degree and DID the research.

This. City employees (or at least most city employees - I know NYC schools are closed) do not get the day after Thanksgiving off either.
Not sure how this came up since this thread was about stores opening on Thanksgiving day but I just wanted to jump on the "I don't have off either" bandwagon . Truth be told, it's probably the greatest day to work! No one is around, the office is quiet, phones are barely ringing. I LOVE it

Only on LIF can a debate about shopping turn into a history lesson
The stores have to be open for all the diabetics taking the kids so they a park in the expectant mother spot but eat a sandwich in the spot before they go in and then let the kid eat a banana in the store and pay for it later. But go return the bread they bought the other day
But maybe they brought their dog into the store with them which made them forgot to cash their friend's check which in turn led them to give a lower than acceptable wedding gift that weekend, even though they have a "huge undeserved" teacher's salary !!!

Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us
My last job was open the Friday after Thanksgiving as well and it is a Telecom co. I don't agree about the stores being open on Thanksgiving, but I don't think it's a big deal to open at the crack of dawn for shoppers. My IL's have always gotten together the weekend before Thanksgiving for their own "family" Thanksgiving. Just worked when everyone could be together.

Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us
Lots of companies are open on the Friday after Thanksgiving. It's not a federal holiday so it's up to the company if they want to make it a company holiday. I happen to be off, but I also work on other federal holidays- like Veterans Day, President's Day etc.
I don't think the point of this thread was stores being open on the Friday after Thanksgiving. There is no reason for them not to be. I think it started because of stores opening on Thanksgiving itself...earlier and earlier each year.
It is only going to get worse. I can see in about 10 years, the times they open will just earlier and earlier until we have something like White Wednesday leading up to Black Friday. Stores will open at 6 am on the Wed before Thanksgiving and stay open all through the night and Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday.

This comment was how we got on the topic of being off on the Friday after Thanksgiving. I wanted to point out that not only teachers have off that day, many other professionals also have off. It was a passing comment........I didn't realize everyone would feel the need to say whether they are off that day.
I wasn't looking to start an argument, some people are off for the whole weekend, some aren't. I just wanted to point that out since the above post made it seem like the idea of anyone being off that day is ludicrous. Some companies just give that day because it's a Friday, the day after a major holiday, and if they were open many people would likely use their vacation time to take the day anyway. That's all.

Just another reason to hate Toys R us
I do not agree with stores being open on thanksgiving day. 3,4,5 pm is not necessary. Madness starting at 10pm ok, at leas that shouldn't interfere too badly with employees spending time with their family.
I don't know what employer lets their employees have off the day after, I work for a major bank (compliance) and it is not a scheduled day off.
This is my husbands first year in retail and working holidays is going to become "normal" for us unfortunately. We are lucky that he has thanksgiving off but he is working Christmas Day 6am-3pm and NYE, quite possibly till close, midnight. Does it stink? Yeah but he does get paid time and a half at least on Christmas. He feels bad leaving his (preggo) wife home but he's doing what he has to do. Hopefully next year he can at least have Christmas off for baby's first Christmas.

The entire financial industry works that Friday. I have never had this day off. Some smaller companies close (not finance) but not the bigger firms. Eventually I think most companies will be open that Friday
Oh and really I am just complaining because I think everyone should have off that Friday! It's so depressing going into work that day

I worked for Online Media company (start up) and black friday was considered a rolling holiday. Some departments had to work. I was one of those departments because I was in client services, just fortunate that I was able to work from home. But if your client was working then so were you.
As far as Thanksgiving & stores being open, I dont hate stores for being open or people for shopping.IMHO Its wated energy. Yes, I am fortunate that I have off on those days. My sister is unable to stay with us at the Poconos because she has to work on friday (Telecom Ind.). It sucks but thats the nature of the business.
Plenty of "non essential" jobs have been open on holidays and it sucks for those people who have to work them. Example, my ex-bf was a security guard he had to work on holidays or go in on the night shift. His job sucked and was sh!tty, but to get upset at other people because of a job you or a family member has is beyond real to me. IT people damn near work around the clock all the time. A server goes down during their Thanksgiving meal, bet your @ss they are leaving the table to fix it.
I feel for retail employees& families because I worked it for 3 years in college and I needed that job more than anything. The hours sucked and I hated working on Christmas & new year eve because thats when my family celebrates.
And yea maybe you did not sign up for working on Thanksgiving specifically since this is fairly new thing, but alot of times job descriptions and responsibilities change. Unfortunately, you have to go with it or else some other willing participant is going to take your job and do it. Sadly, this is how it works for all jobs big or small. ETA: As far as holiday shopping, I hate it and try to do most of it online. Never liked dealing with crowds and chaos. I avoid malls on the weekend during regular seasons.

i can tell you after many years of working and managing retail there were many people who WANTED to work the holidays because it means overtime pay and other perks. I know my BIL who works for apple on black friday they are feeding the employees, having an ipad raffle for people who work, overtime pay etc. He wanted to be there.
This is the way I look at it.

Just another reason to hate Toys R us
There are so many people up in arms about this, but no one seems to be concerned about anyone in the restaurant business - waiters, cooks, bussers, etc. it's not like they get to spend the day with their family, and they get paid diddly. i feel way worse for them than i do someone who at least gets paid actual minimum wage, if not OT.

ITA working on BF its like a ghost town. Before I switched careers I used to work for an investment bank and had to work BF... most of the people took off but we had to make sure there was some sort of coverage there (which was usually me!) I get off now though, which is nice.

Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us
I don't respond often to threads however this one blows my mind. It goes from hating TRU to hating retail all together to then fighting with one another. FIVE PAGES!
Some of these responses are so dramatic. If you disagree with the way stores conduct themselves, don't go.
If you feel the holiday shouldn't be celebrated b/c the Indians were raped, pillaged, etc, don't celebrate it (also you do not get the day off and you cannot take advantage of any of the sales associated with such a terrible holiday)
If you feel bad for those that have to work (Cops, EMT, Nurses and even those in restaurants) why not do something for THEM on this day? A hot cup of coffee to a police station or dropping a simple bouquet of flowers or homemade cookies off at a hospital receptionists desk for those doctors or nurses (etc) on duty would be more productive than sitting here just bickering about things.
Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks. No matter where you are, who you're with or what you're eating that day. Appreciate what you have and be thankful. It's very simple.

My sister and I used to go to the movies late on Thanksgiving (9-10pm) basically to get out of helping my mom clean up after everyone left... we called it our "Sister tradition" really though we were just being jerks.
But 5pm on Thanksgiving is just not right. I think the only reason people even attempt to get to the stores that day is because they just feel like if they don't they're going to miss out on the one thing they really need that they would have bought on Black Friday had the store just waited to open liked they used to.
Family values in the country suck.
