Anyone have experience with Cushing's Disease in a dog?
It is suspected that my dog "may" have early symptoms of Cushing's disease. I have finally read about it as I didn't want to google. But I did. And now I am sick to my stomach. We would have to do further testing to be sure it was Cushing's but my vet wants to give it some more time.
Does anyone have any experience with Cushing's disease in their dog?

Re: Anyone have experience with Cushing's Disease in a dog?
Thank you both. He is drinking so much these days, and urinating a lot. And he had a routine test come back abnormal 2 times now (alkalinephosphatase or something like that). It doesn't look good. I am praying the drinking and urinating calms down b/c the vet is mostly going by symptoms more than the blood test. I believe he was negative for diabetes so Cushing's is the most suspect at this point.
I am NOT ready for this. So not ready for my doggie to be sick and start aging.

I did, and ultimately, we put him down at age 13. However, he had symptoms for about 1 year before we actually had to take that step. He had always been a huge drinker so that didnt alarm us and we probably missed that as a sign. Then he started panting a lot which is when we noticed something was wrong. I'm sorry

Re: Anyone have experience with Cushing's Disease in a dog?
Yes, I am sorry you have to go through this. We had Toby who had Cushing's. It took us a year to really see what was going on with him. There are 2 types of tumors that come with Cushing's, one on the brain & one on the adrenal glands. I think Toby had the one on the pituitary gland. We treated him with chemo pills, I forget the name, but honestly it really didn't help him. The pills are expensive & if they are given to much it can end up causing other issues. In the end we had to put him to sleep. It was sooo sad & I still miss him.
I would try to find a vet who has experience with Cushing's. I feel our vet didn't do enough. She is a good primary care but not specialty vet.
Your vet should recommend an ultra sound to determine which type your dog has. One is easier to treat than the other.
ETA: there is a test that can be done to check the cortisol levels & it is also expensive. Then they put them on the pills & do the test again 10 - 14 days later & then the amt of pills given is reduced.
Good Luck & hugs to your puppy.

No Cushings here..but when my dog was peeing all the time & drinking tons of water it turned out to be diabetes. Did they test for that? Good luck!!!

Yes and it was negative. Now that I think about it, my dog has probably had slight symptoms for a few years now.
He had dental surgery and some extractions 2 weeks ago and the symptoms increased after that I assume due to stress. Hoping once he heals, that somehow his exaggerated symptoms will calm down and I can have some more time with him being a normal doggie.
Praying for some more time without needing treatment, that's all I am doing right now. I can't accept that he may be sick just yet.

I would check into it sooner than later. the over production for cortisol cause's more stress on their little bodies.

See this is what confuses me. I have read most doctors don't treat unless the symptoms are an issue.
In your experience, what do you think of that?
What were your dog's symptoms and for how long? Can you tell me more about your dog's experience with Cushings?

They thought my guy might have Cushings too, can't remember if he was tested or not (was about 2 years ago) because giving him insulin fixed his issues. Sending hugs & prayers for you and your pup!!!

Its been 4 years so I don't remember all the details.
But he would eat anything not nailed down. He acted hungry all the time & actually ate books on me. He drank water all the time & peed everywhere. He got a pot belly & was generally cranky. I firmly believe it also caused him to lose his eye sight. I'm not sure how much he could see but we would walk him up & down the stairs by staying step step until he got to the end & we didn't move anything in the house. In the end he lost his appetite & was very lethargic, the. The last 2 days he was throwing up & wouldn't even lift his head to look at us. I feel we may have jumped the gun in putting to sleep but my DH made the final decision as he couldn't stand seeing him not the happy & well. To this day it is one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make.

He does sound like he was in very poor health.
My dog has some teeth pulled and the symptoms started after that. Mostly excessive drinking and urinating. He doesn't eat that much and is perfectly fine otherwise. He has an elevated alk phosphatase test in July and then again before the teeth cleaning. That's why my vet was waiting for symptoms to show since he only had the abnormal test but no major symptoms. The last two days he actually has been drinking more normally and urinating less frequently. Almost "normal" for him.
I am so sorry about your dog.

No. His symptoms actually have calmed down (excessive drinking and urinating). I think the surgery really stressed him out and he is calmer now. We are going to give it some more time. For now, very thankful that he seems a bit more like himself.
