Switching up protocol from Clomid to injectables

I know I'm full of questions today... I asked my RE if this last IUI didn't work would I be able to switch to injectables since I already tried 3 cycles on clomid. He said to me that because our issue is male factor the injectables wouldn't really make much of a difference. And he fears putting me on injectables he said because I already respond very well to the clomid with 4 follicles at least and he would be scared of the great risk of multiples. He said to think abt it and then tell him what I want to do but I'm so torn. At this point I just want to be pregnant and I'm willing to try anything. I wouldn't mind having twins actually I'd love that! He really feels strongly abt IVF with ICSI for my situation and that's completely an option for me down the road but I figured why not try something different for now. His hesitancy with injectables is making me feel torn now. I just don't know what to do. If you ladies have any insight I'd love to hear it!

If the male factor truly is your only issue then maybe it won't help, but from what I have read sometimes the quality is better on injectables then clomid, sometimes not.
Also, my dr was hesitant to move me from clomid to injectables for the same reason, always had 3 or 4-5 follicles even on the lowest dose, when I did move onto injectables after many clomid/femara cycles I responded about the same and even ended up canceling more then one ivf because of a poor response. So the way you respond to one drug doesn't always dictate how you respond to another.

Honestly, if your issue is male factor I would do the Ivf with icsi. The only diff injectables will do with an iui is give you a lot more follicles. And when they say multiples, they mean like 3,4 or even 5. It's not safe for you or the babies and if that happened you would get the selective reduction talk.

The only diff with injectables and iui and Ivf is the retrieval and transfer. You're already stimming. With the Ivf and icsi at least they can assist with the fertilization if that seems to be the problem and then they transfer 2 or 3 of your best quality. I personally would do that and I'm speaking from experience bc I did that all.

how many IUI's have you done? I would listen to your RE, i too never did injectable cycles bc i made plenty of follicles on climid and there was no point. We have some morphology issues and now after 4 IVF cycles come to find out we have egg quality issues as well. Without ICSI we probably wouldn't have had any eggs fertilized. GL Chat Icon

Re: Switching up protocol from Clomid to injectables

Thank you so much ladies your both right and I was pretty much thinking the same but I needed to hear it from someone else I guess. My doctor sounded very nervous abt the injectables and he was stressing the huge risk of multiples. I would never want to put my babies at risk if that did happen and to be honest I can't even think of selective reduction that would just completely kill me and I don't want to put myself in that situation. I'm just going to try 2 more clomid/IUI cycles and then just move onto IVF. In my heart I feel that IVF with ICSI is the right path and I guess I should follow that feeling. Thanks for the support!

I just completed my 3rd IUI cycle. How do you know if you have egg quality issues, how do they test that? Is it only by retrieving them and then testing? My RE never mentioned that this could be our issue idk if its because he's looking at my age I'm 28. I've had cd 3 fsh bloodwork and that came back normal is that an indicator of egg quality?

At 28, you probably don't have quality issues. I'm 38 and it's an issue for us. The doctor based that on my age, the fact that I've lost parts of both ovaries to endo, my high FSH and low AMH. I don't think there's any one specific test that they do to diagnose a quality problem, as opposed to looking at a combination of factors.

We've done 1 cycle of IVF so far. We only got 5 mature follicles and only 1 made it to transfer. That one resulted in a chemical, which they suspect was due to poor egg quality.
