NSLIJ Southside or Good Sam?
The nurse I met on the plane, neo-natal at Good Sam, see my comments above, said Good Sam is building all new suites expected to open in early 2015. But she said she honestly doesn't expect completion until later in the year. She said they won't be done when I deliver in April.
But I already decided on Southside.

NSLIJ Southside or Good Sam?
Had 2 babies at Good Sam. I knew prior to birth we would have a nicu stay so that is why I chose GS

NSLIJ Southside or Good Sam?
I delivered at Good Sam three years ago. Overall I had a good experience but the rooms are quite small. I didn't like how a lot of the nurses pushed breastfeeding on me and do note that I did so for 1 year. I just felt like it was no body else's business. The other complaint I had was that they brought my dd to me almost hourly the nights I was there, despite the fact that I told them I wanted some rest. They were so pushy with breast feeding I think, so that's why.

That's funny because I had a totally different experience, also 3 years ago. I was not BF'ing and they didn't say a word to me about it again (with the exception of one nurse who had to be put in her place-like you said, MYOB) and I had them take DS to the nursery and they didn't bring him back until I asked. I had a great experience there.
To the OP, I would pick Good Sam even though the accommodations are not as great as Southside. I personally had no problems with my roommate at GS but I would have preferred a private room. In any event, I would choose GS because it has a really great NICU in the event, God forbid, you need it. It's also a better hospital to handle any issues mom may have should delivery turn south. Sorry for being so morbid but I worry about having adequate, well trained medical staff in the event of emergencies the most. Good Sam is the best on the south shore for that.
I'm due in June and I am Good Sam has upgraded the rooms by then because that would be the only improvement I could think of.

I have to agree with this. You really never know what might happen and I am the type to always prepare for the worst. God forbid something went wrong, I wouldn't want myself or the baby to have to be transferred to another hospital. I liked that the NICU was there. My DD did wind up there for a few days, which I didn't expect to happen.

I was told that at Southside if you had a real problem the baby could be transferred to another LIJ, probably Northshore. So that was part of my consideration in choosing Southside. Though the transfer part scares me, I think it's worth knowing they could get care at North Shore.
If I was high risk or new I'd need NICU I would have given birth at North Shore even though it's 50 minutes away, because they are supposed to be one of the best in the country.
My GP tried to push me to an OB at Good Sam, because he is part of that hospital, but my parents have a lot of doctor friends at both, and after a TON of research I went with Southside (and Berlin because he has a great reputation for c-sections, which I need.)

Re: NSLIJ Southside or Good Sam?
i have had 2 great experiences at good sam, one 4 years ago & the second 9 months ago
southside's NICU is not a level 3 and good sam's is so thats the difference with the nicus
i know good sam has somewhat of a bad rap, but i have nothing but great things to say about both experiences! i was supposed to deliver at southside second time around to get my tubes tied, but i delivered early & my OB wanted me at good sam bc of their nicu
