Eta: isn't it racist to assume all white people are racist?
Nope. I don't think so. I think we all are or were at some point in our lives. Again....our grandparents had "Whites Only" water fountains and felt they deserved that. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree..and there's only been two trees since then!

Re: Anyone watching the Baltimore riots?
Your comments reek of anti cop sentiments. All those murderous cops are innocent until proven guilty as well.
Better hope the jury is majority black....or else I guarantee, the cops will get off. White privilege will always rear it's ugly head. When the coroner rules it a homicide, then someone has blood on his hands. There's no other interpretation. I'm not at all anti cop. I am extremely pro cop and value every single one of them AND their families. I'm anti cops who use lethal force against any person who is not an obvious and immediate life or death threat to them. Until white privilege is squashed through generations of less racist people and until cops are better trained to execute with less lethal force, then these problems will exist. I can not state enough though that racism and white privilege are at the core of these murders. And to deny that is to deny our American history.

Re: Anyone watching the Baltimore riots?

Look, I come from a LONG LONG line of FDNY and NYPD - I still have a TON of family who serve, every day. I fear for them, I do. They are good people, who would never kill a man bc of their race. They are not one of the bad apples, but they are being judged as a whole by the actions of some.
It is kind of the same, the black men killed, the ones unjustly at the hands of officers, were killed by bad apples. Now they are rioting. Again, its not the way, but they are angry bc people in their communities are killed, bc they have been victims, even if on a smaller scale at the hands of the police. Are they not judged as a whole now bc of some bad apples?
NO ONE deserves to die unless they are threatened, NO ONE, on either side. But some in the black communities have formed an impression of law enforcement as a whole bc of bad apples, but some of these same officers have done the same and that is why this keeps happening.
We can discuss the minutia until we all go to bed tonight but Grill is right, racism exists (although I do not agree we are all inherently racist). I think, and pardon me Grill, but if she expressed her point without calling us racist and instead try to drive home the point that there IS white privilege and that blacks ARE targeted (not that we are all racist) we couldve seen the bigger message.
There a GOOD people in these communities who are currnently at their churches, with their leaders, trying to find a better way, but just as we are all human, we do not all react the same. Rioting is NOT OK, hurting the police and firemen is NOT OK but neither is killing suspects when they pose no immediate threat.
People are angry and heated on BOTH sides and I can see that and I understand BOTH sides. What you can take from Grills posts, is that there IS white privilege, which is NOT the same as racism and despite the deplorable actions of some, is that TRY, just TRY to put yourselves in their shoes. I can understand, while still thinking its COMPLETELY wrong and counter productive, why the rioting happens. They feel like they have NO VOICE.
I pray for everyone involved.
How many like a percentage that are actually in the streets doing what they are doing give a dam about what happened to that man

The mayor should be arrested for giving permission for these hood rats to behave like that. ****...you did not just say this! I'd love to break your child's spine and call you a ghetto rat for destroying property to express your pain over the injustice. It's the immoral, deep seated and racist beliefs like these that are truly at the crux of this dilemma. I could cry at just how truly ignorant your comment is. So sad that this level of racism still exists and is getting passed on to the next generation.
Wow!! You have an issue with what you suspect is police brutality of who you are assuming are white cops on an African American man in police custody BUT you say you would love to break an innocent child's spine. Who does that? I'm just disgusted by how someone could even utter a comment like that especially about a child. I am disturbed and could cry about the ignorance ( and hypocrisy) of YOUR comment.

Re: Anyone watching the Baltimore riots?
I haven't fully read about the riots yet (time zone and all that jazz), but I'll read up on them later.
That being said, I can understand why they are rioting. Is it right? No, not at all.
I understand white privilege, but some points made by a previous poster do not sit well with me-- the grandparents comment and the comment about "I'd love to break your child's back...". There is a way to say things, and this poster clearly doesn't get that. It came out as disgusting. Maybe say something like "Imagine if this happened to you blah blah..." "I'd love to break your child's back" sounds pretty hateful, IMO.
I don't normally like to take things out of context, but sometimes things are just so poorly written that it discredits their whole argument. But I expected nothing less from this poster.
IMO, police brutality needs to be looked at further. I read a good article the other day. It's a long read, but not bad.

People of all colors are sitting home watching their tvs and classifying the rioters as "animals," "thugs," "hood rats"....not because they are black, but because they are destroying everything around them all while stealing oreos. So whereas you may believe that all white people are racist, these riots (and the media coverage) are doing nothing to bridge the gap.
Agreed. I highly doubt they are thinking of the victim here. If they want change, which they all claim to want...this is NOT the way to bring about change.
Every single one of these rioters, gangsters, looters, etc, is undoing what their ancestors fought so hard for. Today's generation is going backwards.

I just read, The rioters set fire to a CVS that was already looted and then when the FD showed up the rioters stabbed holes in the hose so the firefighters couldn't do their job.

Re: Anyone watching the Baltimore riots?
Guys...OMG...The way you talk about someone is just as disturbing as the way you feel I come off harshly. I am genuinely disgusted by yet another murder. I would never break a child's spine..but my point was that no one deserves that to happen under any circumstance and that poor soul is someone's son. The poster that I wrote that too was so callous and insensitive to it being a LIFE....a life of someone that was brutally and irresponsibly taken at the hands of another police officer. I was trying to make a point. And clearly, it roused many of you up. To focus on that though is just inane...it misses the entire point of this thread and, in typical white fashion....it distracts oneself and others from really considering the possibility that you, your family and your lifestyle contribute to the perpetuation of white privilege. I am definitely a when it comes to the injustice and harm that people have to suffer on account of other's belief systems. Call me what you will, research me, PM me.....I am a moral and upstanding member of a great LI community and I have strong views. This post is not about me. And again...I'm sorry that my intense words took the real meaning away from the thread.
Martin Luther King, Jr. once said that "A Riot is the Language of the Unheard". And that is what is happening hear. There are many people on this thread who have addressed their white-born racism and privilege and moved on to a more egalitarian life and many who have really yet to do just that. And it is to you that I write such intense words. You are still unable to hear the main points of the rioters arguments and stay focused on their actions only. Time to look in the mirror instead of outwards towards others.

Re: Anyone watching the Baltimore riots?
I didn't read every reply on this thread but this is my personal feeling. What happened to Freddie Gray was a terrible, that is not in question. However, taking to the streets and destroying property, stealing, and running rampant in the street is absolutely NO way to get your point across and bring about change. There is NO excuse for this kind of disgusting behavior, NONE, and the people involved are NOT helping their cause at all by doing what they are doing.
I cannot respect or feel sympathy for anyone rioting in the streets causing harm and damage to everything and everyone around them. It's disgusting, deplorable, selfish behavior. And let's all be honest, in these riot situations you can try and kid yourself into thinking all of these rioters are "fighting for a cause" but the reality is once things like this start herd mentality kicks in and what you have is a whole bunch of animals (YES, animals because good, law abiding citizens would NEVER do this) running rampant in the streets making things unsafe for everyone around them. The message gets lost because nobody can see past the horrible things that are taking place right now in this city.
There are good cops. There are bad cops. Just like there are good and bad people in EVERY profession out there. However, rioting and destroying everything around you in the place you call "home" is just NO way to bring about any kind of change. It also does NOTHING to help minimize racism and change the way that some view African-Americans in this country. If anything, it just makes people feel more justified in their opinions, wrong as they may be. It's the sad reality in a situation like this and it's just too bad that those rioting in the streets aren't able to see that this simply won't end well or help anything. All that will come of this is a city destroyed and bad feelings all around.
It's just a shame and I find the pictures and videos so sickening. What kind of world are we living in today where anyone would justify this kind of behavior??? Everything about this situation is just wrong. It will solve nothing.

Or this guy trying to diffuse the situation
Or this guy
“I did 30 years, OK, came out a Master Sergeant. I’ve seen more than all this,” he said. “I’ve been through the riots already. This right here is not relevant. They need to have their butts at home. They need to be in their home units with their families studying and doing something with their life. Not out here protesting about something that is not really about nothing. “They do not respect this young man’s death. You know. Now, mama and daddy lost a child. That could be them. So I’m very pissed.”
When asked why he did it when others would be afraid, Valentine gave the greatest answer. “I love my country. I love my Charm City. I’m an American,” he said. “I’m not black, white, red, yellow or nothing. I am American.”

That may be true but this name is basically only used to stir up drama on CIO posts, vaccine threads, etc. If they are legitimately trying to have a debate and not just then he/she should have no issue using their regular name.
It's real easy to say something as disgusting as you wish you could break someone's child's spine when you are hiding under an "anonymous name".

Re: Anyone watching the Baltimore riots?
I was listening to a community pastor being interviewed this morning. He was saying that these rioters were NOT gang members. He said that on Sunday night, 150 pastors and church leaders met with gang leaders and members from 2 very large rival gangs and signed a peace treaty. After some rioting on Saturday, this meeting was called.
He said that these rioters and looters were made up mostly of high school kids (and coincidentally started at 3 upon the release of school), and that a meme, or flier, was circulating all day yesterday to meet at the mall for this riot calling it a "purge". There were likely some outsiders involved, but were mostly high school students.
