Dec. 1st School Cutoff Question for moms of kids born in Dec
Just curious since my baby is due in December...
How do you deal with the December 1 school cutoff? Do some schools allow the kids to enter school if they're a few days after the cutoff if they're "ready"? Or is it out of the question and they just automatically have to wait until the next year?

Dec. 1st School Cutoff Question for moms of kids born in Dec
December 1 is the cutoff. If your baby is born December 2, you are out of luck. They wait the year. They have to do that and there are no exceptions for anyone.

Re: Dec. 1st School Cutoff Question for moms of kids born in Dec
Some people send their kid to a private kindergarten to get around the cut off. With so many parents holding back their children born in September, October, November, I think my December baby is fine where he is supposed to be.

Dec. 1st School Cutoff Question for moms of kids born in Dec
My DS is a dec 28th baby. He is going to private K and the. To public 1st grade. He does so much better around the older kids so I'm going to plan on preK in sept and K the following year. Big it comes time to put him in K and he's not ready then we won't do it but as of right now that's our plan

Dec. 1st School Cutoff Question for moms of kids born in Dec
My friend's daughter is born on the 10th of December. She started K at 4. Westbury school district- she needs to pass the K evaluation and she started in September. I would say it depends on the district. I know that they called and were given step by step of what to do. My niece is born Dec 15 in RVC school district and the district said she would have to wait.

Dec. 1st School Cutoff Question for moms of kids born in Dec
My friends daughter is dec and missed the cutoff. She has been in nursery school for 3 and 4. They won't take her into kindergarten next year and the nursery school stops the year she is in now. So my friend had to find another private nursery school for her to go into next year for the year. The school will let her test into 1st grade the following year but stinks they won't let her test into kindergarten this fall even though she would be ready.

Dec. 1st School Cutoff Question for moms of kids born in Dec
My district will not budge. My daughter was born January 1st. I am glad, she is that much more mature and ahead of the game being the oldest in her class. There is no point in rushing these kids. School is hard when they get older, you will be thankful for having held them back.

Your only option is private school. I have yet to hear of a district that will bend the rules. Some schools have a 12/31 cut off though.

My twins were born December 2nd. They will be the oldest In their class. We called and spoke to the school but there was nothing they could do. Now I am happy they are. you could do private school.

NYC DOE is 12/31, as it should be IMO
I feel like the cutoff should be universal for all of NYS, heck for all of the US, it so annoying that it isn't.
My feeling is, make the cutoff 12/31, if Fall/Winter babies REALLY aren't ready then there is always the option to repeat.

Dec. 1st School Cutoff Question for moms of kids born in Dec
Like so many things I notice every day, to this I say "only on LI." Nowhere else has a Dec. 1 cutoff because it doesn't make sense. Jan. 1 cutoff- all kids born in the same year. Sept. 1 cutoff- all kids same age. Dec. 1 cutoff- nonsense.
I grew up in the city and was born in Jan. I HATED being the oldest. I was bored out of my mind and wasn't challenged. I've always sworn I would never do that to my kid.
For me, I'd do Catholic school for K or leave the district.

It's not only Long Island. Virginia is 10/1. That doesn't make sense to me.

Re: Dec. 1st School Cutoff Question for moms of kids born in Dec
The school cutoff thing is so interesting to me. I'm in NJ and for my district, the cutoff is October 31st. Other districts it's October 1st. Then you have December 1st and December 31st. You would think there would be a universal cutoff date.

Re: Dec. 1st School Cutoff Question for moms of kids born in Dec
We are in nj and the cutoff is 10/1. Dd is the youngest in her class being born the day before the cutoff. She had to pass both the kindergarten screening and a special readiness test in order to enroll in kindergarten here. I am thrilled we sent her on time even though she is the youngest in her grade. There are other children who are over a year older than she is in her grade.

I said the same thing when I was enrolling my son two years ago. I'm in NJ, Our cutoff is Sept. 30th. Even the catholic schools have different cut offs. I enrolled my DC in Catholic school since he was missing it by 18 days. I kept him in the school because it is a better option for him and I really like it.

I agree.
DS is a 12/30 baby and started K this year.
It's amazing what they expect of these kids in K alone.
We have no regrets whatsoever and have had no issues with him.

Re: Dec. 1st School Cutoff Question for moms of kids born in Dec
Being a December baby myself (and having a December baby as well), this topic always bothers me because regardless of WHEN the cutoff is, there's always an oldest and a youngest. If the cutoff was April,, the April babies would be the oldest and march the youngest. There's always going to be a 12-month span of ages in a grade. And eventually, that span won't matter as much as they get older. When they are younger, there's enrichment if one is "mature" and extra support if one is behind, and I caution people from making a jump because of how their child presents at age 4 or 5. I'm an educator and know kids pushed ahead because of brightness at a young age but had a hard time come age 12 when they start to lag behind in social issues and maturity.

Re: Dec. 1st School Cutoff Question for moms of kids born in Dec
My son is 4.5 years old. He's born dec 10th so he can't go to k this year. He will be the oldest.
My daughter is 5, sept birthday and the younger end in class. It makes a difference. I'm glad my son will have an extra year.
I will recommend this: keep moving them up. My son did preschool 2years in a row because of the cut off. He's bored & I'm having behavior problems with him in class because of it. I should have had him go up to pre k then either repeated pre k, picked a more advanced pre k or move to a private k.

Many people redshirt, even if their kids make the cutoff, so there will never be a class of kids all the same age.

Dec. 1st School Cutoff Question for moms of kids born in Dec
Yes, the cutoff is silly but realistically they have to draw the line somewhere. My bday is December 2 so my parents sent me to private school for kindergarten. I was consistently the youngest in my class but I don't think it had any effect on anything that I can recall.

I totally agree with this. I'm a December baby and so was my older brother. We lived in Florida when he started kindergarten so he was able to start earlier since the cutoff date was different. We moved back to New York and I started kindergarten later but to me it didn't matter. I had lots of friends who had birthdays in January and February so to me it all evens out. My son is also a December baby and is repeating the 3s program at his school. I'm happy that he is getting more time in school to have fun, play and just enjoy himself before the craziness of kindergarten starts.
