Weight and IVF
Hello everyone,
I am new to the board and just have a quick question. Can anyone tell me their experiences with RE's and their weight? Are you overweight and your RE has told you to lose weight before they will do IVF?
I've done 3 IUI's which all failed. I will more than likely be moving to IVF either next cycle, or after 1 more IUI attempt. I currently go to RSofNY and see Dr. Stelling. I have no idea if he's going to tell me I need to lose weight before he will consider the procedure. I've heard horror stories about Dr. Pena on this topic, but I am not sure if all doctors are like that.
If anyone has experience with him or RSofNY I would love your input.
Thanks so much in advance!

Weight and IVF
Hi. Just went through my first IVF cycle. I am overweight, although my RE didn't put that much pressure on me to lose a ton of weight, he wanted me to lose 10lbs over the course of the month more so for the anesthesia purposes for the egg retrieval than anything. Unfortunately our first cycle didn't work and we are moving onto IVF #2 in July and at the meeting with my RE yesterday he did say that every pound lost does help your chances and your egg quality so he challenged me to lose another 15lbs before the start of my next cycle. He suggested I do a low carb high protein diet and of course exercise. I have to say my biggest fear when our IUI's didn't work was that the RE was going to tell me he wouldn't do IVF without losing weight, he stressed the importance but in a very supportive and non judgmental way. I am of course on board with it and will do whatever it takes to get the end result that we all so desperately want, a healthy pregnancy and baby. Good luck with your journey!

Re: Weight and IVF
I had IUI done with RSNY last month and failed, currently im taking a break, i'll try back in a few months. I personally have not had any bad experiences with them, everyone has been super nice with me there but I also go there because is the only infertility clinic that my insurance covers.
Good luck.

Re: Weight and IVF
I think it just depends on the actual clinic itself. Some are "fat phobic" as I have come to discover.
Dr. Stelling never made a huge point about my weight (and I am about 100lbs overweight), but did say that every pound lost increases our chances. He advised me to lose 5% of my body weight before we first started with them. But the weight factor never prohibited me to begin treatment.
At another clinic I went to before rsofny said they would not begin any treatments until I was under a certain weight.
Good luck!

I haven't done IVF yet. We've done multiple IUI's though, with only 1 BFP that ended in a chemical. Since the most recent cycle was the one that was a chemical, we'll be doing another IUI in August (or sooner if DH's new insurance covers it- in the past, we've paid for everything out of pocket).

Re: Weight and IVF
I used RsofNY too and they didn't say the words "lose weight" but when I did my first frozen embryo transfer cycle (right before starting)with them Dr Trivax and I discussed healthier eating. Am I overweight yes literally borderline but I did exercise(squats, lunges and crunches) and gave up sweets, sodas(water became my BFF). While cycling oatmeal was my go to breakfast with fruit , lunch I ate either soups or salads, dinner was fish or chicken. I slimmed down right before my transfer but both of my FET cycles I was sick(fever, runny nose all that). After my transfer I would then bloat(2ww) from the prednisone and PIO.
FYI...Once I started the PIO injections I stopped any form of exercise but continued the healthy eating.

Weight and IVF
I am very overweight, and while Dr. Stelling addressed it with me re: possibly affecting results, he was not judgmental and didn't let it delay my treatment. I did have to meet with Dr. Singer regarding anesthesia, but with a clearance from my primary care doctor, it was fine. Dr. Saketos discussed weight-loss options with me once, but also in a non-judgmental way. I have done 4 IUIs and 3 IVF cycles with RS of NY. I get monitored at the West Islip office.

Weight and IVF
When I went to COlumbia before I had my son My Dr told me it is always better to be in the normal weight range and just suggested I try to get some exercise into my day. It was not a requirement that I lost weight. I was heavier than my normal but not severely overweight at the time.
I just went to LI IVF for my consult today. I told my RE that I had recently lost 20+ lbs and she said weight can have an effect bit not always so to jsut always do the best you can with being healthy.

Weight and IVF
weight in general has an impact on fertility, it has been proven that some ladies who are very over wt have trouble getting preg, if you are very over weight why not try and drop some of it perhaps it would help.
I would stay away from RSofNY, they are not honest and do not like to tell people something wont work if x,y,z is not done.
good luck

I can't comment on RSOFNY because I never went there, but was a patient at LIIVF and had the exact opposite experience. I was never once told to lose weight (I'm about 45-50lbs overweight). In fact, my weight was never even mentioned or referred to except right before my IVF retrieval -- I had to go to my primary care doctor and have a general physical and he had to then fill out a form saying that I was healthy enough to go under anesthesia since my weight put me at "increased risk". Though I had 4 IUI's that resulted in BFN's, I got pregnant on my first IVF with a day 3 single embryo transfer -- DD is one month today!

Weight and IVF
I went to RSofNY and the doctor I saw there at the time is no longer there but she was so nasty about my weight. Yes I was overweight. She had them check my weight every time I went in and I was getting monitored a lot due to IVF. She was mean about it though. After my fresh cycle failed I switched to a different doctor in the practice who never once mentioned weight.

Ditto to this - my weight was never brought up with LIIVF other than the medical clearance. However, we are still trying for a BFP.

Re: Weight and IVF
I know someone who used Dr Pena who is overweight. He is a very abrasive person so when he discussed her weight he was very blunt. He did mention her weight could be playing a part in her infertility and that she should lose weight to rule out those factors AND informed her of health related risks that could potentially harm the baby due to her weight. With all that he did continue to do IUI and IVF for her so while it was a suggestion/recommendation he didn't go as far as to not treat.
