Are Multivitamin Drops w/ Flouride needed?

My Ped prescribed Multivitamin drops to give to my now 5 month old DD. His reasoning was because we are trying out solids with her daily formula bottles that its needed. But my concern is she just started on cereal at 4 months and now we added bananas this month. Are they really necessary right now because i thought she got enough vitamins from her formula alone? The bottle says 6 months and older so it concerns me that its more vitamins that she doesn't need plus it has flouride and she doesn't have any teeth yet.

The extra vitamin d is needed? I thought that was for breast fed babies?

Same. Fluoride is a neurotoxin.

Why would he prescrib a multivitamin drop with fluoride if it was bad? Are they supposed to get it when they are older?

I give the vitamin with fluoride as prescribed by my doctor starting at 6 months. I trust that the controlled amount is safe and beneficial. I believe it's suppose to help their baby and permanent teeth. I haven't heard of giving it before 6 months but I would discuss it further with your doctor if you're unsure. Some people choose not to give vitamins with fluoride ever, others choose to give no vitamins at all. You have to decide what you think is best I guess.

Fluoride is controversial. Do your own research. I gave both my girls the vitamins with fluoride beginning at 6months. I made the conclusion based on my research that although too much fluoride can be toxic, the controlled amount present in the prescription is beneficial for their teeth. We stop vitamins with fluoride at 3, when we switched over to toothpaste with fluoride.

My understanding is that it is meant to be applied topically (I.e. Toothpaste that isn't swallowed), not ingested.

Yes it is...if ingested in enormous amounts.

Do your own research about it and then make a decision. We gave vitamins with fluoride until we switched to fluoride toothpaste.

I give fluoride with no issue but I think that age is too young.
I don't think we got the fluoride vits until she was older.

Thanks. Gonna wait till she is 6 months to give her the multi w/ fluoride like many have done. I guess the doc felt that she would be eating solids more than having formula which she is not doing yet.
