Good Sam VS Southside

When I had my son 3 years ago, my doctor only delivered at Good Sam or Plainview. Now that Plainview maternity closed, he also delivers at Southside.

I didn't have a TERRIBLE experience at Good Sam...but I wouldnt say it was great. Labor and delivery nurses were nice enough - my labor came on very quick and by the time i got to the hospital I was already 6 cm dilated. I had to wait for what seemed like forever for the epidural, and almost immediately following I had a crazy reaction and my sons heart rate plummeted - ended up with an emergency c-section, knocked out cold because there wasn't enough time to numb me.

Now I don't think any of what happened was really the hospitals fault - It was probably just the way my body reacted to it. Yet even my recovery nurses were pretty terrible - no one cleaned me up until 10 oclock that night, even though by csection was at 10 that morning. I had to ask for the pain meds, ask for a gas pill (recommendation from a friend who also had a csection) - No one ever gave me a stool softener so when I returned home it was a nightmare...the lactation consultant was NEVER there, saw me once for about 5 minutes. One nurse told me the baby doesnt have to eat for the first 24 hrs?? Then when they wanted me to get up and walk for the first time, the nurse didnt give me any warning so my pain peds had practically warn off -she brings me to the bathroom and just leaves me there! I almost passed out and had to pull the emergency cord to get her to come back because i couldnt stand up...

ANYWAY - there were a few other things, but I just dont know if my expectations were too high lol (Ive never been in a hospital before) OR if I just my circumstance had a crummy experience.

Anyone have a similiar experience at Good Sam and for those that delivered at Southside, how was your experience?

Thank you for reading!

Re: Good Sam VS Southside

I delivered at Southside and have nothing but good things to say.
Everyone from the nurses in L&D to the nurses on the maternity floor were amazing and super nice.
I felt I got top notch care.
I paid extra for a private room and it was worth every penny.

But all in all, I'd deliver there again in a heartbeat if I was going to have another.

Happy to hear. How much was it for a private room by the way? I think I need to do this this time - I definitely didn't like sharing a room either.

Good Sam VS Southside

I delivered my first 2 at Good Sam and my 3rd (last week) at Southside. If I had to do it again, I would go to Southside over Good Sam. Even with the holiday weekend, I had such great care the entire time. Each person went above and beyond and I can't say enough good things. I had a private room. It was $200/night and completely worth it.

This was 6 years ago but I paid $200 a night.
And I see from the poster above that it hasn't gone up in 6 years! Wow.

I only delivered at Good Sam but I had great experiences both times. The second time I did the private room which was like $225 night I think and it was worth every penny. I was practically the only person on the floor and I got great care.

Did they require that the baby stay with you the entire time and not go to the nursery? I am pregnant with my 3rd and it will be another c section and am concerned how I will take care of a baby the first night. Id like the baby to be able to go to the nursery like my other 2 did so I can recover quick at night time. Thanks!

When I was there no. I sent her to the nursery every night.
They never said one word about it. I called them to come get her and they brought her back in the morning.

If they had though I would have caused a stink. It's my baby, my choice and they work for me.

Good Sam VS Southside

I delivered at Good Sam and had the choice of Good Sam or Plainview and now it would be GS or SS so we might have the same Dr.

If it is they will ask your preference but in the end you will end up where the Dr is unless you want the Dr on call. I personally would only go where my Dr is because I fully trust and love him that much so I'd keep an open mind

yeah my last DD was 5 years ago and they let me put her there no problem. I hear though as of recently they actually "make" you keep the baby with you. Which I find horrendous and ridiculous. They should have to care for the baby so you can recover. I hear horror stories recently where moms cannot even stand up after a surgery and are forced to keep the baby with you. I would plan to make a stink to, but id rather not even deal if this "rumor" is true, and go to Southside as well.

Do you see Dr. Antoniadis? I spoke to him last night at my visit and he said wherever I want to go. I asked him what his preference was and he said he doesnt have one.

I of course wouldnt want anyone else - I adore him. I am having a schedule section though, so hopefully depending on timing he wouldnt be held up at GS if I decide to go SS.

At Good Sam you mean?
I was talking about SouthSide- they gave me no issues and took her each night... this was 6 years ago though.

Yup he delivered my son. Yes you get to pick but if he is already at the other one with another patient he will tell you to go there if you want him as he won't be able to run from hospital to hospital. So it doesn't matter to him just know in the end when you call to say hey I'm going into labor he may tell you the hospital you didn't pick.

I have heard this too but that was not my experience. My nurse was definitely nicely trying to convince me to keep the baby but I persisted and prevailed. I just said I was not feeling well and felt that I needed to rest (which was true...after all, I just had a freaking baby!). In fact, my doctor told me ahead of time that they can not make you room in. Granted, I gave birth there close to a year ago so I don't know if things have changed in the past year.

I'm going to be delivering there again in September and I have every intention of sending the baby to the nursery at night. If you were trying to BF, I can see why it may be important to keep the baby by you but I don't so why I can't recuperate and get some rest makes no sense to me. If it becomes an issue, I will call my OB and have him write an order for it. I don't care. Squeaky wheel

Yep I agree. It's insane to me that they do this. And trust me, it's all BS when they say it's because they are "baby friendly". Please. Happy mommy, happy baby. It's all a cost saving measure just like everything else. Just like being stingy with formula and not giving pacifiers. They are a business. Bottom line. They don't give 2 craps about you or your baby.
And for the amount they bill your insurance per night - not to mention if you are paying for a private room- they damn well better do what you tell them.
Such horseshit.
