From the updates Ive seen. They didnt overbook.
It was just a situation where employees needed to get on. After everyone boarded.

Not sure if this is how it's done. But one way to handle it is if nobody takes the offer and volunteers to get off the plane.
The employees make an announcement that they will have the computer randomly pick a seat to empty and at that point no perks will be given.
I'm sure people will reconsider being rebooked.

As for this customer. Has it come out if he was really a doctor? Something seemed very off with him. He was yelling....just kill me...just kill me.

I just read something that said selling more seats than are available is considered fraud anywhere else...why does that not apply to the airlines?
They seem to be above the law....



ITA!! It's such BS. People pay A LOT of money to fly and they count on being able to get where they are going once they book a flight. The overbooking thing is so ridiculous and it should be stopped.

This whole story is absolutely insane and disgusting.

You know. I always wondered why some people charge the flights and push people who really need to pre-board out of the way like animals. But if you really can lose your seat if you don't get there first, like a game of musical chairs, no wonder people act like animals.

For that reason alone, overbooking should be illegal.

Jet Blue never overbooks intentionally. It's a classier experience overall. Treat people like they're civilized.

United's initial public comment stated, " We apologise for the overbook situation."

ETA: I don't condone his refusal to comply. I take issue with how United handled this. If they had employees who needed to be on a flight, they need to set aside seats for those employees. Removing paying customers from a flight is not ok.

Yes I know. I was just going by the recent updated statement.
Also I haven't heard anything from any other passengers that were bumped besides the 4 for needed for the employees. So maybe it wasn't overbooked??

I don't think they knew about the employees until last minute. So they wouldn't have had seats set aside for them.

But one of the cops was suspended for not following proper procedure. That leads me to believe what they did was wrong. Totally wrong.

Seems no one on the plane cared enough to swap with him.

Plenty cared enough to film it though.

If it was that important that he got where he was going because he was a doctor with patients, where was the good Samaritan who would swap?

All airlines have these rules. Not sure boycotting one would make a difference.

Jet Blue does bump people off of their planes.

Column 3 in the chart shows the total number bumped involuntarily from the major airlines. JetBlue is very low for the quarter listed, but they do still bump involuntarily.

28 for JetBlue vs 929 for United Airlines, and UA only has roughly 2x the number of passengers, so they are way out of proportion.

Southwest is definitely the worst, with American Airlines close behind...

If an airline knows they need to save 4 seats for crew members being transported to a job, and they haven't reached the quota with volunteers by the close of check in, why can't they block the last 4 passengers from checking in? Assuming the last 4 passengers aren't part of a larger group why not bump them off before even putting them through all this? Having to go through security, standing around waiting, checking in their baggage only to offload it.... Is there a reason why they couldn't just handle this by close of check in, stop the last few passengers from checking in altogether, apologize, and reaccomodate them? Or how about handling it at the gate before boarding? UA didn't know they needed 4 seats for crew members until everyone was seated on the flight?

If they realized they needed 4 additional seats for employees, and no one was willing to give up their seat......why couldn't those employees just DRIVE to their destination? Why do paying customers have to be inconvenienced?

I hope this man is ok....he seemed very disoriented and head trauma is serious stuff.....his head slammed into that headrest and he was knocked unconscious. He has a HUGE lawsuit on his hands......

I, personally, will never fly United...even if it's the cheapest flight available. If this is the practice they condone, I don't need my daughter witnessing that.

I really don't see how this guy's past somehow justifies UA's actions. They still handled it wrong from the go. They should have barred him from entering if they needed his seat for an employee. If it comes out that he was acting like a psycho before being selected then I will agree that he needed to be forcibly removed at any cost. No info on that yet though.

His past has nothing to do with his treatment on the plane. So what if he was caught previously in drug related issues? The fact that he didn't want to get off the plane and was being forced off is the issue.

Munoz is the CEO

In recounting the sequence of events, Munoz told employees that the passenger "refused" to deplane and "became more and more disruptive and belligerent" and faulted him for "running back onto the aircraft in defiance of both our crew and security officials."


If he was off the plane and ran back onto the aircraft all bets are off.

So if all this is true. It changes my view.



This is what I read as well. And this is why you can't watch a 30 second video of the police forcing him off and make a judgement. Personally, I need more

What I always love about these videos is that, while everyone is seemingly appalled, nobody is doing anything but videotaping the incident.

I didn't read this whole thread but I'm 99.9% sure that whatever sparked the incident was not videotaped or at least isn't splashed all over the media. I'm not condoning how the officer handled the situation but I'm sure it didn't go down like:
"Sir, we have overbooked the flight. We would like to ask you to get off of the plane."
"Thank you for asking but I really must get to my sickly patients in Kentucky so I would ask, respectfully, that you please ask one of my co-passengers." and then BAM! Yanked out of seat, knocked unconscious and bloodied.

Not only do airlines overbook but hotels usually overbook during peak times as well. I used to travel for work and arrive late at night only to find out that I had to go to another hotel. It's definitely not as frequent as airlines overbooking but it does happen. That's why if you are arriving late it's best to request a late check in so they don't give away your room!

I think the way he was forcibly removed was disgusting but I think that's more on the police officer than on United Airlines.

He ran back onto the plane AFTER the he was dragged off - after the police "lost" him in the terminal (which in and of itself seems very odd). Do you mean he also ran onto the plane BEFORE this incident occurred?

It's not relevant. Based on eyewitness accounts, videos, and suspension of an officer for not following proper protocol for THIS incident, United clearly mismanaged the situation. Smearing the victim is United PR in crisis mode.

It is way too easy to get a lot of people up in arms over something without all the facts. All you need is an inflammatory title because many won't look past that.

Before anyone gets angry, I'm saying this as a general comment about people jumping to conclusions on social media, not about anyone in particular.

I honestly can't believe they had to forcibly remove someone from a plane to make room for crew. There must have been a better solution. But, once police get involved, I don't think there is any choice but to do what they ask.
