Really torn on the HPV vaccine
Not opening a big debate, but I'm really trying to make a decision on the HPV vaccine and would like to know if you will get it for your own children?
I have had HPV and cervical dysplasia that needed cryosurgery, and I would never want my dd to go through that. But the stories I read about the vaccine scare me.

Really torn on the HPV vaccine
If I had a daughter or son I would not HESITATE to get them the vaccine. I have HPV. I had to have a LEEP.
Something like 85% of the American public has HPV and does not know it. Men spread it to women.
The stories that are scary come mostly from people who are anti vaccine. In my experience there is very little science and fact behind those theories and statements. I am NOT bashing at all. I just find there is a great lack of actual scientific evidence in the anti vaxx community. Because of that I look to the CDC.
ANY medicine carries risks. Any vaccine carries risk. Tylenol will shut down your kidneys. It must be a risk/reward. Does the reward outweigh the very small risk?
IMHO yes.
Cervical cancer is killing women. This vaccine has been deemed safe an effective. I will not sit here and tell you its 100% safe. No medicine is. But I base my opinion on the fact of science.

Re: Really torn on the HPV vaccine
Can anyone lay out the reasons why it's considered scarier than other vaccines? What are the side effects that people worry about?

Re: Really torn on the HPV vaccine
My son (he's 17) was given the HPV vaccine. I didn't hesitate at all.
My son had no side effects at all. I believe the 1st shot gave him a sore arm for a day but that was the extent of it.

There have been reported side effects and reading stuff like this terrified me, even though I know its rare:

See right here, this ruins the validatity of this site for me:
You will come to know the truth, and the truth will set you free John 8:32
'"We must obey God rather than men." (Acts 5:29) Vaccination is an artificial invention made by man to alter immune function. The immune system, on the other hand, is a natural function given by God to protect us from disease. Trusting in manmade vaccination is like saying that we think God didn’t make us correctly and that we need artificially ‘boosting’ in order to survive.
Seems to me like a bunch of religious zealots who don't believe in any vaccines.
I have heard of some side effects but I dont' recall what they were and how common they were. I will have to do more research as DD gets closer to the age for the shot.
Definitely do research but just be careful of the source.

I'm not going to try and convince anyone of anything they're not comfortable with, but IMO, the drive to and from the doctor's office to get the shot is the most dangerous thing about the vaccine.

I got it when it first became available - no issues or side effects. I would also get it for my kids.

I do agree with the site, but the personal stories are what get me. I do think the site was created by some anti-vaxer, but the stories are still real. But I know they are uncommon in relation to the number of vaccines given.

Really torn on the HPV vaccine
As a cancer researcher intimately aware of the inner workings of adverse event reporting of drugs and vaccines you can bet your buns I will absolutely be giving my DD the vaccine.
The one zillionth chance of something happening due to the vaccine is a chance I'll gladly take to protect her from HPV and the interventions and diagnostics that can come along with it.

Really torn on the HPV vaccine
My DS is not of age yet but I will not hesitate. After having multiple issues from HPV I would not want my son or daughter to go through it.
As with any vaccine you hear about the bad but the good is never as loud.

Really torn on the HPV vaccine
Not in a million years. My best friend gave it to her 2 daughters. They are now part of a class action. Both girls had severe complications and at 14 and 16 are infertile.

Re: Really torn on the HPV vaccine
I will not be getting this vaccine for my children.
I work in the Pharmaceutical Industry and have read a lot about this subject. If my children decide that this is something that they want to do when they are of age, then they can make that decision for themselves.

Yes, that is the thing. Just because someone starts a web page doesn't mean everything on it is true. I feel like this particular site is very anti Vax and pro- God will heal you. I would disregard this site completely and look for more scientific sources. Again, I have not done any research on this and am not sure what I will do for my DD when the time comes.

You can't. If you want to really do your research look into VAERS and look for reports in which the adverse event was deemed DEFINITELY RELATED to the vaccine. That is the only reputable, legitimate source and I wouldn't give any other source a second of my time.

Really torn on the HPV vaccine
Ask your doc for the vaccine insert. It's NOT a 1 pager but a ohamplet with like 10 pages. Read it. Then decide.

I have not yet done research either but I have a little time. At this point I am leaning towards doing it. My maternal grandmother died of cervical cancer at 32 which is a definite factor in my decision.

Obviously I don't. I'm not some uneducated person who believes everything that they read. But I have seen several documentaries that aired similar stories, and it's concerning. But I am still open to learning more. Just wanted to hear what others had to say since this is a fairly new vaccine.

I normally roll my eyes at media attention aimed at vaccines (I am fiercely pro vaccine and there is absolutely nothing that would change my mind) but John Oliver actually did a pretty good piece on vaccines last week. I can normally take him or leave him but his team did their homework on this one and I would strongly suggest anyone on the fence watch it.

I had the same.. or whatever that stuff was called. They said I had cancer on the phone and basically I lost 20% chance of having children and was stuck on 10yrs of follow up after the Cyrotherapy. Good times!
I'd do it all over again and sign my daughter up today and schedule her appointment MYSELF over any of the horrific side affects I've seen and heard of with the vaccine. The life long suffering and pain. My coworker's daughter is one of those suffering and it's just misery. They can't 'fix' her. She's visited the Mayo Clinic for help too. What kind of life is that? Plus it's affecting her chances of having kids too. So what did she gain?
I'm sorry but no. It's not vetted enough yet for me and my daughter. I'm not sold yet.
Worse.. our state has considered making it mandatory and still flirting with it. *sigh*
