Toddler Beds vs. Twin Beds?

Soooo, we had planned to convert DD's crib to a toddler bed around 2. With another baby on the way, that's not happening. I'm not sure what to do- should we get her a toddler bed or go straight to twin? What did you do? How old was your LO when you switched?

We're going to convert DDs bed to a toddler bed soon (she'll be 2 in dec). We need to bolt the furniture to the walls first and do something about the plugs because she's a lunatic.

I think it depends on how your DD sleeps. If she's a wild sleeper a toddler bed might be a better bet.

If you will need to purchase one or the other (twin for DD or crib for new baby), I would get the twin bed now and give DDs crib to the baby.

She is a bit of a wild sleeper, but I thought I could do rails on a twin bed or get one lower to the ground, just in case.

I definitely do not want to buy a new crib. I love our crib and the whole set. I had planned for it to convert to a toddler bed for her and then have number 2 when she was DEFINITELY ready for her big girl room, but here we are! Chat Icon

For space reasons we bought a toddler bed. We got a set that included a mattress from Wal-Mart and dd1 slept in that from 2.5 to 5 when we moved them to a bigger room and got both girls matching twins. My younger one went straight from the crib to the twin at 2.5. If you have space and aren't concerned about things like matching furniture I wouldn't waste money on the toddler bed.

Well we'd be buying her a whole new bedroom set. The LO will inherit her room- including the crib, dresser, nightstand, and changing table. Once that one is older, we'll convert it. It's a beautiful set from BBB.

Ugh, I'm so torn. I know I don't have to worry about this until after the holidays at least, but I just think I'd feel better if I had a plan, ya know?

If you're buying a whole new set and moving her into her own room I'd just buy a twin or full (whatever you plan to have long term). No reason to buy a piece of furniture and mattress just to use for a few years if you don't need to. My youngest went right to a twin without even adding rails and she was fine.

Thanks everyone- I think we are going to go for the twin bed with the rail. Then she's set for a few years. Chat Icon

we are in same boat except DS will be 3.

we do not want to buy a whole new BR set though.

we have already converted his bed to a toddler bed, but will convert it back.

We are thinking we are going to get a toddler bed , then when DS1 grows out of it use it for DS2. Then we can convert original crib to full size for DS1. So that means a good 5years out of the toddler bed (which only costs $80-150). By then we would buy DS2 a new set probably.

We bought all the conversion kits when we had DS1 because we were worried they would discontinue (used our Babies R us registry 10% back LOL)

Both of my children went to toddler beds only because the crib converted when I had DS DD was almost 3 we did not buy her a toddler bed and went straight to a full size bed with rails.

Re: Toddler Beds vs. Twin Beds?

we did a toddler bed for a few reasons. but it worked well for us b/c we let DD pick it out and she was really excited about her new Elmo bed. we never had an issue with her not wanting to sleep in her bed since she got her "big girl bed".

we also did this before we told her we were expecting #2.

we just made it about her being a big girl instead and never moved the old crib.

the toddler beds you could find for like $40, so it was an easier transition for us at the time. we also built her a new "closet" system from ikea as her "big sister" closet. once both kids are old enough, we will invest in new furniture and redesigning the rooms.
