I used to have the worst migraines around the time I would get my period. They would be so bad, I would be in bed all day with the blinds drawn and I would throw up.
I went off the pill and haven't had one since.
For me the nausea was even worse than the headache sometimes.
And the visual auras beforehand. Scary as shit.
The migraines were debilitating!
Sometimes I will get ocular migraines now but those are definitely due to lack of sleep and dehydration and are gone within 15-20 minutes. As long as my sleep and water intake are okay, I can usually avoid them.

This is me! I get them for days (continuous) around my period and again when I ovulate. I just went off the pill on Friday. Praying the answer is as easy as this!!!
How long after did they stop? I read it can take 3-4 months to be out of your system.
I went off BC a long time ago (7-8 years ago) so I do not remember how long it took for them to clear up. I want to say, it was almost immediately.

Yes I would have to take a day off of work. I couldn't get out of bed due to the nausea and I'd be vomiting and dry heaving every 20 minutes for hours. I also felt mentally off like I couldn't focus or concentrate. No way I could do anything or even take care of my daughter. Awful.

This is me. Unfortunately I can’t take off work and my husband is a police officer on rotating shifts... so I have to take care of the 3 kids. It’s really hard! Painful.
I try to hide it from everyone except my husband. Especially the kids and I try not to take anything out on them. Makes it hard when you almost have to pull over from picking up your oldest from basketball... and almost throw up on the side of the road.
I just try to keep going. Very hard.

I give you credit. I know how hard it is and I can't imagine having to function. I did find that sometimes those Sea Bands- the acupressure wrist bands for sea sickness or pregnancy nausea, did help with the nausea. It presses on a nerve in your wrists that is supposed to east nausea. It's worth a shot.

How do you know what's a migraine versus a regular headache? I get some real icky headaches especially in my eye area but I don't know if that's severe like a migraine? I do get brain zaps from my Effexor (known side effect :/ ) which are nasty.

Someone I know is part of a clinical trial for migraines for a new injection med called Aimovig, might be worth looking into.

It depends. If you get migraine with aura you know right away because it starts with these strange visual disturbances...you see swirls, zig zags, you lose partial vision in one eye- it's horrific. That lasts for about 20 min to half an hour, then goes away and then the throbbing, pounding headache starts- and for me sometimes nausea and vomiting.
Some people don't get auras first though.
Migraines are usually pounding and on one side.
Other symptoms can include numbness and tingling in your face and extremities, trouble concentrating, sensitivity to light, nausea and vomiting. I swear some of the symptoms can mimic a stroke- which is scary as heck.
Do you remember that reporter that was reporting from the Grammys a few years ago and starting talking nonsense and everyone thought she had a stroke? That was a migraine.
Take a look at what it did to her. Freaking scary..
The thing is- a migraine is a neurological event... that is so much more than just a headache. The blood vessels in your head are contracting at first- which causes the visual disturbances and other neurological symptoms- and then expanding- which causes the pounding headache.
I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Oh gosh that's horrible. I definitely haven't had a migraine like you explained. I think I get tension headaches but that's it.

Have you tried a chiropractor? I too would get migraines multiple times a month and after I started seeing my chiro, the migraines cut down to only when I get my period. I also make sure I'm hydrated enough as well. I also know some people that did an elimination diet and found that when they went gluten free, their migraines stopped.
It's so much fun being a woman, right? LOL

You can't function if it's a migraine, like literally can't move. Sensitivity to light, sound, lots of people, including myself vomit. You feel like someone is stabbing one side of your brain with a machete, migraines happen on one side of head, and you find yourself praying for the sweet release of death.

I was an OTC migraine self medicate person until I saw a neuro last month (finally got up the nerve (pun intended) to seek medical help). The meds he gave me to take as soon as I feel it coming on have helped tremendously. Stronger than the OTC and minus the caffeine. I have to say, being a busy mom, he said to not skip meals. I try my hardest but when I do skip a meal I do feel it contributes. During my period is just insane, migraines for 2 days at least.

I had horrific migraines for years. Just like everyone described above. Had every test under the sun and nothing. Then one day it hit while I was at work the doctor took my blood pressure and it was through the roof. My blood pressure never came up on regular testing because I wasn't having a migraine. I started blood pressure medicine and have not had one since going on 10 years.

Re: migraine sufferers
I am on medication for migraines, but still get them around my period. My neurologist has me take 400mg of ibuprofen 3x/day preventatively from 2 days before my period is due through the first day or 2 of it. It works really well. If your headaches are that bad, anything you take after the fact can just bring on a subsequent rebound headache.
