Kids and TV

I was more restrictive when they were younger - I didn't want to have to resort to a device when we were out somewhere just to keep them quiet.

Now it ebbs and flows - they end up watching more in the winter and that's fine. We don't have any hard and fast rules.

I was a stay at home mom and for the first 3 years of my DD's life, she did not watch any TV or have any tablet time. Zero electronics. It was not hard for me. We had a lot of fun together doing other things all day and used reading as our "downtime". Maybe nannies "loathe" it, but I would do it again in a heartbeat. After she turned 3, I started letting her watch classics... like Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, and Disney movies. Now she watches fairly unrestricted. Some days she may watch 3 hours, but there are many days she still gets ZERO. However, to address the original poster, how do you not let her watch at restaurants? I feel that is the one thing I do not have control over... I can't ask the restaurant to turn off the TV or change our seats to avoid it. That's the #1 source of her tv viewing lol...



I took it as she doesn't give her an iPad or phone to watch tv at the table.

I would never ask someone to turn off their tv, restaurant or otherwise.

It’s funny you mention Disney movies. My one hard rule is that I won’t let her watch princess movies (Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid). Yes, I know she’ll see them eventually but for now I want to keep her free of princess syndrome as long as possible. She does love Moana though and I recently relented on Frozen.

I actually felt guilty at a play date when DD kept calling Cinderella’s dress “the blue dress” and Belle’s “the yellow dress.” She’s going to be in therapy one day talking about her feminist mother who deprived her of Disney.

I love Ariel as well, but couldn't figure out what was the cool moral about her when I was writing my post.

So crazy how everyone can interpret thing different. Like now that you said that about Belle i'm like crap that is kind of true. lol. I see someone who looks past diversity and falls in love with a person sole. Not the most handsome guy or captain of the football team. I also loved that she was different from everyone and read so many books. That was me when I was young, Ironic since now Im not a bookworm and watch a lot of tv.

Cinderella gave me hope. Still can't figure out Ariel aside from the cool music.

It's just funny how people see what they want to see. Your daughter will be fine. Everyone thinks i'm crazy because my son doesn't play video games or have ipad/iphone or I told him participation trophies that he got didn't mean anything (since 4yrs old). We have no rules or limits but that has to change. My kids used to be great with balancing electronics and playing with actual toys. Now, my older son is addicted to video games and my little 2 love watching tv too much. I have to cut it back. It's too much. I realized my older guy hasn't touched his legos or puzzles in months. My little ones don't know basic letters. It's ridiculous. I need to do a better job.

I feel like you have to have a happy medium.

My friend totally restricts electronics so when her kids come near them they turn into zombies. My kids don’t have that many restrictions so they are ok when they need to put down the electronics or if someone wants to do something else.

We sometimes let them use devices at restaurants- if they are tired and we think it’s going to be a long meal we let them. But usually we don’t bring them.

Same. DD could never sit through a movie, even to this day at 8 years old she has very little interest in movies. But yeah, she knew all the princesses.
Maybe from Disney Jr shows? Who knows.
I'm just glad she's outgrown that phase now. She's on to other nonsense.

We dont have a set rule or limit. We try to get our kids outdoors or engaged in activities as much as possible. But there are just some days when I have to get something done, and its gross outside, so they can watch TV. Always age-appropriate shows. I actually find many childrens shows to be pretty educational anyway.

We don't have any rules limiting TV. DC watch a lot more in the winter than in the summer, I will say that. I see nothing wrong with them relaxing in front of the TV a little bit before/after school, or when I'm making dinner. They mostly like Disney Jr. and Nick Jr.

I do limit their tablet time though, just because DD is on the border of needing glasses, and her eye dr. suggested limiting it.

I’m not a huge fan of tv, and would prefer for them to not watch it-we actually only have one tv that works.

When I’m home with the kids the tv never gets turned on-and I’m home with them all day. I feel like it balances the fact that they watch it with their dad at night and at their grandparents.

I’ve never really liked tv though, and watch very little myself. I’ll binge watch a series here and there, but i can easily go weeks without watching it myself. I would honestly love to just get rid of it haha



But what do you do? Lol. I can’t inagine not watching it tv. I guess I’m addicted. I should pick up a book.

I think I watch more tv now than I did when I was younger. I used to read and go outside doing stuff lol.

I like TV, but I go through phases- I haven't watched TV at all this week because I'm super into my book. Next week I might not pick up a book at all or watch TV but play some crap game on my phone. It all evens out.

Belle at least has a sense of adventure and values intelligence over good looks. Ariel, she's kinda a crap princess. Chat Icon Though she was totally my favorite growing up. Now adult me wants to smack her around. "I'm 16 years old, not a child anymore!"Oh yes you are, park your tail on that rock and think about how you're treating your poor father! Chat Icon

But Disney princesses are better now- Moana and Frozen have more values than all the others combined. They were the first not to need to be rescued by a prince. Plus the music is pretty awesome. Chat Icon

I don't have a no TV rule, but there are some rules when watching TV.
First off between school, homework, Hebrew school, basketball, soccer, play dates, etc... it's hard to find time to watch TV. I try and do movie nights every once in a while if we have no plans on a Friday night.
They watch TV during breakfast in the morning and then it's school and other stuff. They read before bed. I do allow TV during dinner some nights when we bring in pizza bc of different activities. I like for them to have some down time and if it means watching TV then fine. They watch Teen Nick mostly like Henry Danger or Loud House. Nothing crazy.
They are not allowed video games during the week, but no issues on weekends to play. Damn, those games are expensive and when their friends are over they play too along with running outside, art, playing sports, etc.
I feel like they are hardly on their IPads except for in the morning too and maybe a little after they finish their homework. Most of their homework is on the Chromebook anyway.
I have 2 boys 9 and 7. Movies they've seen are PG and even some PG13, but those aren't anything crazy.
They're good boys most of the time so I don't feel the need to say No to things as long as they know what's right and wrong.

I’m sorry I’m not sure you read my post correctly. Who do you think I am judging? I think it’s unfair to ask a nanny to abide by a rule that you yourself would probably not stick to. Not sure how that makes me
Judgemental. And that’s wonderful for you and your child that you had no TV if that’s what works for you. I am a firm believer in do what’s right for you and your children. I actually am one of the least judgemental parents I know. But I personally find most people with the no TV rule are people that don’t actually spend day in and day out with their kids. You are definitely the exception and not the rule.

Either way whatever floats your boat. I would find it odd to not watch TV. I personally enjoy watching TV and don’t mind if my kids enjoy it also.

We are limited screen family. My 51/2 year old son watches tv/movies but he never watched anything until around 18 months.

Currently, he never uses an iPad unless it’s to talk to his grandparents on FaceTime, doesn’t play video games..... If he asks me to play an iPad game (it’s rare, but it’s happened a few times) I let him, but he’s more interested in other things.

We give him the phone to play a game in situations like when we were recently car shopping, or shopping for furniture, but it’s a novelty. Not an expectation.

As for rules, we don’t have a rule. There are days he’ll watch a couple movies, or days he watches nothing. If he says he wants to watch tv but I suggest playing a game together, unless he’s not feeling well he almost always chooses the game. I just don’t see a need for a “rule”.

I let them watch a show at night.
No video games during the week.
Weekends are a free for all since by husband works and I have to get shit done. I’m not saying they are glued to it 24 hrs on the weekends but if they never watched tv or played video games I might lose my mind. To those whose kids watch zero tv, congratulations...

My kids have certain shows they like and I think it’s fine. They’re young, 5 and under, so they’re watching stuff like Paw Patrol, Thomas & Friends, Daniel Tiger, Wiggles, etc. To balance it out, they do plenty of activities, they go to school, they’re busy & out of the house a lot & some days we have no time for tv... but if we’re home all day they’ll definitely watch a few shows, in between playing with their toys, doing homework, cleaning up, etc. Balance is good! I don’t let them stand close to the tv, they have to stay further back... and they don’t watch on the iPad or phone unless we’re stuck at a doctors appointment or something & am desperate which is pretty rare.

Now, my older son is addicted to video games and my little 2 love watching tv too much. I have to cut it back. It's too much. I realized my older guy hasn't touched his legos or puzzles in months. My little ones don't know basic letters. It's ridiculous. I need to do a better job.



I understand this completely. My first had limited TV time. When my second came a long things got way too loose. Somehow i feel like my first still has guidelines and earns his time where my second gets away with more bc he is around whatever the 5 year old is doing.
I will say that through ipad educational games and youtube my DS who just turned 2 years old now knows every letter sound (and numbers, colors, shapes, etc). He is starting to sound out WORDS! He is addicted to watching songs where they sing the letters, sounds etc. It you call out a letter he will tell you the sound it makes and a word that begins with that letter. He also likes the videos where they read books to you and show the pages of the books. I dont see these things as "bad" -- they obviously taught him A LOT! Try to wean onto those items i bet it helps!!
Also, my 5 year old is old enough to sit nicely in a restaurant and behave. If a meal gets extra long and coloring, and books no longer hack it my 2 year old is allowed to look at a game on my phone or whatever. I used to let my older son do this and he still sits perfectly now that he can better understand patience and the rules. I dont think there is a hard fast rule for anything that is going to make your kids "better" "smarter" "more mannered"... i think being there for them, loving them, and supporting them will generate that respect more than TV vs no TV or junk food limits etc. I will also agree with the limits on junk food -- i didnt have limits so i was able to have a couple cookies or whatever and didnt really think much of it. Some ppl i knew had so many limits and now they sit and eat a whole box of cookies at a time. I let my kids have snacks within reason and i will ALWAYS have "junk" in my cabinet!

My kids have a no electronics rule during the week. If they get ready early enough in the morning, they will put on sports highlights before they have to leave. They don’t really watch shows at night during the week because most evenings are filled with activities. If they have a free night, they may watch something as long as their homework and reading are done. On the weekends, they watch tv and play with electronics, but they’re also pretty busy playing at least 1 sport each day.

I personally believe in moderation. MIL got rid of the tv when DH was around 10. While he was very active and also an avid reader, when he finally had access to tv in college, he essentially made up for all of the years he didn’t have it during freshman year. DH’s sister doesn’t allow her kids to watch any tv except maybe a movie very rarely. When they get to watch, they’re glued to it. My kids will watch for a little while, but generally move on to do something else.
