Congrats!

I think they might be very excited to have a little baby around and be good mommy's helpers. However, I think they will have a bond together very different of that from the littlest. I mean for your oldest... I'm guessing when the new baby is about the age she is now (graduating elementary school?), your oldest will be in college and getting ready to drink legally. I mean, 10 and 20, it's two completely different worlds, right? I don't think they will be very close as children but they might become best friends as adults. Once the youngest is 25, the oldest being 35 isn't a big difference anymore. They could be very, very close. Either way it's happening and no one can predict family outcomes (some siblings are close at a young age and then not close as adults, some vice versa, some always close, some never close). All that matters is that you and DH are excited and ready to go back to that newborn stage again!!! Chat Icon

I agree. Closeness isnt all about age gaps its also about personality and how family fosters the relationships. I e. resentment that may build if you make your older one a caretaker rather than letting her enjoy being a kid etc.

Congratulations!!!!! Wishing you a happy and healthy 9 months!

ETA: I just realized my brother and I are 6 years apart. The age difference doesnt even occcur to me as an adult forgot ! My dauhters are 7 and 5 -- close in age and I feel like i didnt get to really enjoy each of them enough individually. If i had another one now I feel like I might be able to enjoy that b aby more now that the older ones are in school..

Re: Large age gap between kids.

My boys are 10 and almost 7 and DD is 20 months. The boys are involved in multiple activities so she does get dragged everywhere. She sleeps wherever including in the stands of hockey rinks during pretty loud games. We keep her occupied at places when she’s awake. The boys adore her. Although the kids are at very different stages, it’s nice that the boys are independent, can help out and can keep themselves entertained. We never wanted our kids spaced too close together. I like the age gap and it was nice that I had one on one time with DD at the beginning while the boys were in school.

I don’t think the age gap is an issue at all! My friend is 10 years younger then her sister and they are so close you would think they were twins! That being said, I have twin boys and if I ever have another there will be a large age gap. My kids are 2 now and I wouldn’t consider another until they are 5 and in school. I try and give my sons a very “normal” mother baby experience/ relationship so parks, mommy and me, music together, museums etc. things I would do if there were just one. With the 2 of them, I’m on my own to do all these things and don’t have help with my husband being gone long hours...it’s so difficult on me and I feel bad for my kids they never got 1:1 time. I think it’s great that your new baby will have all your attention and kids love babies and I think if you encourage and foster a healthy relationship, they will have one! Congrats!!!

Re: Large age gap between kids.

my oldest is almost 11 and my youngest is 4.

Will the baby be dragged everywhere, yes. But in a good way. My son is very active in sports. So yes he goes where we all go. But he's also the most flexible and has such an easy temperament. Maybe that has something to do with it. Chat Icon

My sister is 19 years older than me. Now that's a big age gap! Chat Icon

I wouldn't worry about 7 and 9. Chat Icon

Large age gap between kids.

My DD is 8, my son is 1. It’s AWESOME! it’s like having an extra set of hands because at that age they are old enough to help, play with baby, feed baby, etc and are super responsible. Plus my daughter loves helping and is so I love with him. I wouldn’t have it any other way. All her friends come over and he just melts, he loves playing with them! It’s super sweet to watch.
