Coronavirus and Funerals
I must admit that until about a week ago, I was thinking that everyone was over-reacting about this whole thing. But now I'm starting to get more and more worried and scared.
So far, everyone in my family is fine, thank God. But, I was thinking that if, God forbid, someone in my family, or a close family friend, or anyone, passes away, we can't go to the funeral! I'm Italian-American and I know this may sound weird, but we "do" wakes and funerals. All the paesani show up and the funeral home and church are usually packed. I can't even imagine having to bury a family member and not be able to go!
They're saying that in Italy, it's usually just the priest, a funeral home employee, and one family member at the funeral. How do you chose who goes? Not being able to go would just compound the grief and sorrow.
I know this is really morbid. Am I the only one who thinks this?
I just hope this social distancing works and that we're all back to "normal" quickly!

Coronavirus and Funerals
my cousin in italy said that they won't allow anyone to go and that their cemeteries are overwhelmed so everyone is getting cremated. :(
it is such a terrible loss.

That is awful.
IDK what you do. I was wondering that myself. We are Irish so we have the big, loud wakes and funerals too. My grandmother was knocking on death's door last month so it is a concern but she seems to be doing well now. Thank God.

No you aren’t the only one. That thought has been in my head the past few days. I wouldn’t be able to go because I wouldn’t be able to travel there anyway.
I’ve just had to accept it. I’m not going to lie, I am In full blown panic mode. I can’t do anything else. I don’t go out at all anymore.
It’s just going to get worse before it gets better. In Spain they decided to open an ice rink to use for a morgue.

Re: Coronavirus and Funerals
A friends dad passed away 3/7. And he still hasn't been able to get his body released from the M.E. Every step has been a challenge. He's hoping within the next few days. His dad wanted to be cremated so he's been working on that. He was speaking with the funeral director and they were considering doing a streaming service of some type. Like Facebook live for the family. But ultimelty decided against it and may just have a service at a later date.
I feel terrible for anyone going through this right now.
ETS: Just talked to my friend. His dad was finally released yesterday to the funeral home and they are taking care of the cremation.

Coronavirus and Funerals
2 friends of mine just went to two different funerals/wakes on LI. One was allowed to go to her friends wake but only stay like 10 minutes. One lost her grandfather and it was only immediate family for the funeral and wake. No one was allowed to go to the cemetery. So sad for the families.
One happened last Friday and one was this past Monday so very recent.

Coronavirus and Funerals
One of my closest friends husband passed away yesterday afternoon (not related to corona) and besides being numb, they don't know what to do now. Big Italian family.

My Mother in Law passed away last week. We were only able to have immediate family at the funeral parlor. We'll have a memorial mass for her on a later date.

Re: Coronavirus and Funerals
The funeral homes by me are only doing graveside services. Only a few family members and the clergy person doing the ceremony are allowed to be there.

Sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how hard it is to lose a loved one during this time, and certain family and friends not being able to pay their respects immediately.
My grandmother passed away a few years ago, and we had a memorial "celebration of life" a few months after. It was actually really nice, and while we were all still sad. I felt like it was easier for us to smile and celebrate her knowing she was in a better place, since a few months had passed.

My father works in cremation. He said there has been an increase and many people are putting off services for a later date.

So sorry for your loss.
My friend's MIL died over the weekend and yesterday they did a graveside service for immediate family only and that was it. They are planning a memorial for later on.
