Do you think that the conditions the TWU works under are respectful? Have you seen the health hazards they face on a daily basis? They are treated like animals.
Damn, I was really trying to stay away, but I couldn't help it.
I agree- But it doesn't seem that these are the issues keeping them from agreeing. Its more the financials.

However, I don't think it's fair for any public employees to continue to work without a contract, and I think more could've been done on both sides to prevent this.
Realistically... whats the big deal about working without a contract?
Its not like their benefits STOP if there is no contract. They said they were without a contract for over two years... they certainly aren't crying poverty.
If they don't have a contract, their wage continues to stay the same. With a contract, they'd probably get wage increases, which helps to offset inflation and the increase in the cost of living. I assume most people get raises at their job, whether it's based on merit or length of time at their job. These employees don't have that benefit without a contract.
BAD assumption. I don't get an increase for cost of living, inflation, etc. In 2001 because the market flopped our salaries were cut by 17% - 4 years later I haven't received a raise to make up for that. A 4% increase, even being a top performer, is great. So the guaranteed % increase over 3 yrs to me is BS.

I respect your right and anyone else's union's right to strike for better wages, benefits, and rules.
do you think striking is very respectful towards millions that have problems getting to work today?
I made arrangements to get in today on time. It is an inconvience, I don't feel like the TWU is disrespecting me (is that what you are asking?), I think they are fighting for a contract they think is fair.

That's the risk you (and I) take when you work in the private sector. Unions were formed to fight for their constituients.

I said most people tend to get raises not everyone, and I don't think it's wrong to assume that most people get a raise at some point after working at a company for several years. I don't think you can compare your job to an MTA employee. You don't what their working conditions are like. We don't know what their salary and benefits were compared to the MTA's curent offer. It may seem like a good deal, but we don't know all of the facts. The union and employees obviously didn't see the MTA's offer as fair.

I can understand fighting for better conditions, better pay, I understand it all!!! but this is blackmail not a strike... they could at least have a partial strike, so some of the trains would still be running...

Rebecca, I know what conditions the subways are in, all of us ride them every day... and if they are treated like animals it needs to change, but it is not my fault, or your fault or my neighbors fault and yet I am affected by it and it also affects me financially...

I'd like that. I take a triboro bus to work, my bus was the first one out on this strike and I had to make alternate arrangements yesterday and now today again different arrangements, It's definitely an inconvienence.

Yes, I chose to work for my company and they chose to work in the subway stations. While they have a union to fight for them I don't think they should go on an illegal strike if their demands aren't met. The economy has changed and I don't think they should demand high increases every year, they need to compromise. Also, with the skyrocketing healthcare costs it isn't unreasonable to ask them to contribute, same with pensions.
On a side note I read that City officials have said a transit strike could cost the city $440 million to $660 million a day. That is ridiculous!

I hope they fine the shyt out of the Union and all the employees.
PiLL - tell us how you REALLY feel!!!
If the Union actually would have ACCEPTED the latest MTA deal... they STILL would have much better benefits than I get.
And they are saying they need to "feed their families". Give me a f*cking break.
Where is that violin when I need it.
Really, boohoo they may have to work until 62 like the rest of society.

Re: Post Your Feelings About the Strike.....
On a side note, my father was an air traffic controller when they striked in 1981. Reagan ended up firing them all. And honestly it destroyed our family. So I understand what a strike does to the workers and fighting for what you believe. And I still think it is WRONG that they are striking.

I agree. I have great sympathy for the situations with all the health issues and clean restrooms-
But retiring at 55 and some of these other financials are where they lose me. I also contribute 1/2 to my health insurance and all of Dh's and my 401-k is my contribution. Fair is fair, but come on...

I hope this helps ease your mind... I had to wait on line to come in this morning too and everyone was more than cordial. There was absolutely no pushing or anything, just a single file line. And there were LIRR workers and cops all over the place too to make sure everything stayed orderly. Just be careful
ETS: Can you stagger your hours so that you come in earlier and then leave earlier? I know it's a b!tch to get in earlier, esp now that you're in LI, but it might be worth it since the closer to regular rush hour it is, the worse it will be.

TWU is in the best position to strike - it affects the lives of millions yet only in inconvenient ways. By them striking, they're not endangering the lives of others as a health care worker strike would or a police department or fire department strike would. It's annoying,
See Leeners....this is what I'm talking about when I said in a way they endanger the lives of many New Yorkers on my previous post.....Here is another example......

It's really the same example though - pregnant women And as I was saying, there are obviously indirect results that do put people's safety in jeopardy. However, a direct result of a transit strike is NOT diminishing the safety of others since they are not responsible for the safety of others.

Posted by MrsFresca Sorry to disappoint but it's not the same example.....I think the other LIF member was MrsJ if I recall correctly.....like them there are many others plus all those with other health related issues..... this is more than an indirect & direct cause you know.....
Woah, why the hostility??? Is it not possible that I can disagree with you and we can just have differing opinions? It's nto that I "don't know", I don't agree. Period. No need to be rude about it
To everyone out there trying to get home tonight... good luck! I'm starting my trek now

Re: Post Your Feelings About the Strike.....

I feel bad for the workers, but I think this strike is SO wrong. The MTA employees get FAR BETTER benefits than I do, and I don't get a pension. I have a 401-k that comes out of MY salary, as does my health insurance benefits. These workers made a choice when they chose to work for the MTA. Everyone's job has things about it that sux but you sukl it up and deal. It's called "work", not play.
I don't understand why people are stating whether they believe the MTA offer is fair by comparing their own jobs to the MTA employees' jobs/benefits. I think we should compare what the MTA employees had and what the MTA is offering before deciding what is fair. While many people work until 62 and beyond, the MTA employees only worked until 55. Now, the MTA wants them to work until 62. The employees also did not have to contribute to their pensions or health care, and now they'd be expected to contribute. These are great benefits that the MTA is trying to reduce. While many of us would still be happy with the benefits offered by the MTA, these are major changes for the MTA workers. I can understand why the workers were not jumping at the MTA's offer.

I agree-there is some "indirect" danger, but that danger exists on a daily basis.
I know I actually felt a little safer this morning, not having to worry about my little car being creamed by the Bx2 while trying to park in front of my school!
